I try, every year, to make a familiar recipe with a twist. Green Beans Almandine will be taking the place of the standard Green Bean Casserole this year!
    Green Beans Almandine
2 cans of cut green beans
1 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled
    1 package of slivered almonds
    1 onion, chopped
    Salt and Pepper to taste
    Directions:
Fry the bacon and set aside.
In the bacon grease sauté onion and slivered almonds until the almonds are lightly browned. Use as much or as little almonds and onions as you like.
Drain the green beans and add to the pan with the almonds and onions. Add the bacon. Let it simmer for 15-20 mins then serve

  • One of my favorite things my husband make is sauerkraut eggrolls. First he makes sauerkraut with shredded pork, seasoned how the family likes it, then he makes eggrolls and deep fries them. They never last long! I can't get my Imgur to link. :-??

  • My gram would bake carrot slices with raisins and brownsugar so that the brown sugar made a sort of sauce it smelled divine. I'm not sure of the exact recipe, though.

  • I am not much of a cook, but every year at Thanksgiving my Aunt would make mashed potatoes- with a twist! She put in ranch seasoning, and I assure you, those are the best mashed potatoes I have ever had! I believe you can just use a normal mashed potato recipe and add ranch seasoning mix. It's become special to me because not only do I love to eat- especially at Thanksgiving- but it's also a fun recipe that holds special memories. There's nothing like stuffing your face with mashed potatoes and experiencing a stomach ache afterward from eating too much!

  • Me and my husband had Lumpias at our wedding and I'm trying my hand at it and taking them to Thanksgiving dinner this year.
Lumpias are like skinny, shorter eggrolls. They usually have pork in them with veggies like onion, mushrooms, carrots and water chestnuts.
I'm following this recipe this year:

  • My favorite Thanksgiving dish was when Mom would make her fried cauliflower. Yum. Oh the turkey gravy was good too. She would put pineapple and brown sugar on top of the turkey and then baste the turkey in Ventor's. She made the gravy from the drippings and all that stuff.

  • What a fun contest! My absolute favorite dish at Thanksgiving is something I have been making for over a decade. I got it from my Great Grandma and it is so nostalgic and really makes the holiday for me. It is her sweet potato casserole!

    Sweet Potato Casserole

    Ingredients:

    - 2.5 cups mashed sweet potatoes
    - 1/2 cup melted butter
    - 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    - 2 eggs, beaten
    - 1/2 cup milk or half and half
    - 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    - 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    - 1/4 teaspoon salt

    ** Topping **

    - 1 cup cornflakes, crushed
    - 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
    - 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
    - 1/4 cup cubed, cold butter
    - 1 cup mini marshmallows

    Instructions:

    1. Peel and chop 3 pounds of sweet potatoes. Add to boiling water and boil until tender. Drain.
    2. In a bowl, add the cooked sweet potatoes, melted butter, brown sugar, beaten eggs, milk (or half and half) and spices. Mashed using a fork, potato masher, or a handheld mixer until fully incorporated.
    3. Place sweet potato mixture in a greased or non-stick baking pan.
    4. Mix the topping ingredients together until well blended and then add on top of the sweet potato mixture.
    5. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes until golden.
    6. Serve!

This delicious and tastes even better the next day!

  • I love lumpia! The creamed pearl onion recipe sounds really good too.

My family has a very standard Thanksgiving. Turkey and/or ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, etc. I'm not one of the cooks, but I'll often assist, so I have just general ideas not actual recipes. :D

My favorite dish is the ham. Spiral cut is best. Poke holes all over and stick cloves in them. Lots of garlic. Pineapple juice and rings or chunks. Brown sugar. At least one more ingredient I can't remember lol. Cooked in a crock pot if it's small enough to fit. Yum.

I also love the canned cranberry sauce, whole or jelly, but my grandma used to make a wonderful made from scratch cranberry sauce. I don't care for how my mom usually makes it, she uses cilantro and it's more of a relish or slaw. I definitely did not get the cilantro=good gene from her lmao!

I have a friend who makes a great mashed potato dish with cabbage, colcannon. This sounds about right for how she makes it.

  • So we always go away for Thanksgiving and spend it "somewhere" down south ( We travel every year to the UGA / GATech game T-day Saturday GO DAWGS! ).

But I have a great recipe for when you are burnt out on turkey lol, this is also really good for new cooks who want to "impress"

Slow cooked Pulled Beef ( or Pork )

3+ pounds Beef Brisket ( or pork shoulder roast or " Butt" roast ) Let meat come up to room temp. ( about 1 -2 hours )

    Mix together well the following:

1 cup BBQ Suace ( use your favorite for no fail or PM me for the "how to make it " Recipe, it can be fiddly and success is the most important thing ! )
    1/2 cup Soy Sauce
    1 cup water

Put meat, fatty side up, in a covered roasting pan ( I use an enamel pan but any roasting pan will work ) do NOT use the "rack" you want the meat to sit on the bottom of the pan.

Pour the BBQ mixture over the meat ( be sure to get all sides ), I usually do a wide pour to get it dripping down the sides then pour over the middle.

Oven temperature set to 250 deg farenheit (120 C)
Cook covered for a minimum of 6 hours ( if its a small roast ( 3 pounds ish ) 3 hours at temp, then 3 hours with oven off and left covered )
add 1 hour cook time per pound after 6 pounds ( basically you are cooking at 250 for 1 hour per pound of roast. This is freezable so i generally get a monster sized roast then package it for the freezer in meal sized portions.

Shred roast in pan with fingers or forks, serve over bread or rolls making sure to pour some of the " drippings" over the meat for juicy goodness

    Enjoy !

  • Another big fan of lumpia here! I once attended a Christmas party and ate nearly the entire tray of lumpia. Delicious with or without the sauce.

A long standing favourite of mine is fireweed lemonade. While not strictly a Thanksgiving recipe, the fireweed is a plant that grows in both Alaska(my favourite place that I've lived) and Finland(where my parents come from). It's used in jams, teas, honey, all sorts of things, and all parts of it can be used.

https://windfromthenorth.com/fireweed-lemonade-cocktail/ <--- The recipe for a gin cocktail is also on this same page for the adults. ;) <br />

  • Golden Carrot Buns (reduced from original recipe, which made a frightening amount)
    1 c cooked carrots
    1⁄2 egg, beaten
    1⁄4 c water

Puree these together. Place in bottom of bread machine pan. Then add, in this order:
    3 T vegetable oil
    2 T sugar
    3⁄4 t molasses
    1⁄2 t salt
2 c and 3 T flour (plain ol' all purpose)
    1 1⁄2 tsp yeast

Run a dough cycle on the machine and let dough rest 10 minutes. Form 12 balls (each should weigh about 1.5 oz or 14.2 g) and place on a greased sheet (or use parchment paper). Let rise an hour. Bake 18-20 minutes at 350 deg F (177 deg C). If using convection oven, shorten time to 15 minutes.

These are so good and look different from the usual pale bread.

Way back in the day, my sister and I peeled the carrots for this recipe, and there is a picture somewhere of us with our carrots and peelers. It took me a while (well into adulthood) to try my hand at yeasted bread, and this is a recipe I have confidence in.

  • This is my favorite thing ever. If there is ever an event, it’s what I make: X-mas, Thanksgiving, Birthdays, Fridays, ANYTHING! Lol.

I prefer it without cayenne, but it’s still delicious either way. I just don’t do spicey anything.

    Sweet Potato Parmesean

    serves 8-10
pre heat oven to 400 deg Fahrenheit
    items of need:
4-5 sweet potatos (the red guys) peeled and sliced into 1/4" slices.
1 cup (or more) shredded parmesean cheese.
1pint (2 cups) of heavy whipping cream.
    1 tspn salt.
    1/2 tspn black pepper.
    1/4 tspn cayenne pepper.

in a buttered 9X13 glass dish make 2 layers , slightly overlapped of slices of sweet potatos w/ 1/3 shredded cheese sprinkled over each layer.
then combine heavy cream, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. pour over potatos and cheese. top with remaining cheese
    cover with foil-
    bake 25 minutes
uncover and bake additional 20-30 min until tender and lightly brown

    yum yum enjoy!

  • I just got a new phone that's got a stylus so let's see if I can type this out in record time, lol!

My absolute favorite recipe mom would make for Thanksgiving baked corn casserole (sometimes called creamed corn casserole). It's sweet and creamy and savory all in one, and I've got the biggest sweet tooth lol! My notoriously picky partner even conceeded that this is one of the best dishes, not just for Thanksgiving hehe

    "Baked Corn Casserole"

    2 cups corn
    2 tablespoons butter
    2 tablespoons flour
    1 1/2 cups of milk
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 egg slightly beaten
    1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 slice of buttered bread (i use cheap white bread, but i also add more than one bread slice as well hehe)
Optional: sprinkle of cayenne to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Pre butter a baking dish (mom doesn't specify what size, sorry!)
Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour, stirring until bubbly (this is essentially a roux base). Gradually pour in milk as not to scorch/curdle. Add salt, mustard powder, and sugar, stirring until smooth.
Add corn, egg, and Worcestershire sauce to the white sauce.
Spoon mixture into the buttered baking dish.
    Top with torn bread pieces.
Bake for 25 to 30 mins or until hot and bubbly with browned bread topping.

Now for my half joke recipe, the "I'm too lazy to use the oven and use real measurements" version I created, because 1) does anyone really use measurements? And 2) my partner and I love mom's baked corn so much that I had to figure out how to make it more often.

    "Creamy Corn"

Melt half a stick of butter into a medium sized sauce pan, and add "enough" flour until it congeals together into a roux. Add what usually looks like too much milk, slowly, stopping every few pours to allow the roux to rethicken as you stir. The milk should come almost half way up the sauce pan but not quite. Play with the heat on the electric range because "medium is both too hot and not enough heat" while cooking the roux. Worry for at least 5 mins that the roux won't rethicken, but realize it's fine RIGHT add you're about to add another spoonful of flour.

Add some cayenne, purely dependant on your spice tolerance. Yeet in a pinch of salt, probably too much fresh black pepper, a shake of dry mustard, a bit too much sugar, and enough Worcestershire sauce to make the mixture kinda tan. If you're feeling froggy add a beaten egg but forget to beat it until you actually crack it into the pot. Stir and taste for seasoning. Think the whole time "is this missing something?" and add another splash of Worcestershire sauce.

Add whatever variety of corn you have on hand, including, but not limited to: fresh corn, bag o' frozen corn, canned corn, creamed
add corn and canned whole corn mixed together. Add the corn until it looks like you'll never be able to stir the contents of the pot. Use the fold from the bottom method, because yea maybe you did use too much corn this time.. add a splash of milk (or the remnants of the canned corn juice) to make yourself feel a bit better, and like you didn't screw up the corn this time. The corn should be coated in the sauce but not swimming, but I won't tell anyone if you've got a bit too much roux, don't worry. Cook until warm and bubbly, and enjoy!

For a variation, cut the sugar, add more cayenne, and substitute frozen NOT canned peas, for "Creamy Peas", another partner approved recipe lol :3

  • Sauasage & Apple Stuffing is our favorite.

1 box stuffing mix (Stove Top type, any flavor) and the amount of water needed per the directions
    1 sweet onion, chopped
1 apple, chopped (you can leave the skin on)
    1 stick of butter
1/2 pound of your favorite ground sausage

    Preheat oven to 350 F.
Brown sausage in a frying pan. Drain the fat when cooked.
While the sausage cooking, in a large pot melt the butter on medium heat.
Once butter is melted, add the onion and apple and cook until onion is translucent and apple is tender.
Add drained sausage, dry stuffing mix and water. Stir, cover the pot and let sit for 5 minutes.
Spray an 8"x8" baking dish with cooking spray. Add stuffing mixture to dish and bake in oven for 30 minutes.
    Enjoy!
