I would wait to merge until the first of the year. That way you get the rank specials on both accounts. (Then sell a few to pay for the merger if you need).

The only barn that will be lost is the Primary Barn of the account being merged into the other account. If your Primary Barn of the account receiving the horses during the merge doesn't have enough stalls to hold them all, then you will have to shift horses into other barns until the total in the receiving Primary Barn falls below its maximum. Horses will not be lost, but you won't be able to perform any barn chores there until the number has been reduced.

Also, the more horses and barns being moved, the higher the cost. It's best to merge the smaller stable into the larger one for this reason.

Merging will move all of the horses, gene licenses, cash, IV's, upgrades, barns and straws you might own from the selected account and move them into this one. The base cost of 30 IV's pays for the basic transfer and a new 30 stall barn to put the transferred horses in. Moving barns will add to the price of the merger.
