(Discussion) Culling Show Horses
-
I need to cull some show horses to make room for news foals. I'm looking for information on how many points show horses should ideally be at different ages. Specifically, age 2, 3, 4, and 5. If you are willing, please let me know what amount of points you would expect your show horses to be at at these ages to not get culled.
Any other culling methods you use would be greatly appreciated!Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
I'm super new here, but I always search by "best showing" within my herds, or you could do by age, then go to the end and cull from thereThanked by 1Mensie

I don't cull young horses. I send ages 10 and over to auction, get their lifetime payout. Beginning of the month, I cull anything in Level 8L, its the lowest payout my 10 year olds end up in.
After they go, I also look at the low point earners in other levels. You can use the search for best showing, and then start at the last page of the search. By culling these older show horses, it allows younger showers the room in my barns. I lose a little of my daily payout but it builds back up fast,Post edited by Humboldt at 2021-12-08 17:19:17 -
I agree with @Humboldt. Culling horses younger than 10 makes you lose money.I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

An example from your barn,
Auction horses like this
MSH 11863509
You get their lifetime payout. She is no longer earning any valuable points. Yiu get the most value with that lifetime payount and it gives you space for a pony you bred to earn more points.
The local levels earn the least amount of points. I will auction all mine, even if they are top placing in 8L. However, I tend to keep all my 7W. They are bigger point earners, except the ones that are placing 17 out of 17. -
Thank you guys for the advice. I will definitely start looking through them all. I wasn't aware of the L/W in showing so that is a helpful place to start. Originally, when looking at a horse like that I only saw the daily payout and didn't want to lose it. But I can see the value in a temporary dip in daily payout to have a higher one in the long run.
@Humboldt Thank you for taking the time to show me a specific horse and the reason behind it!Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
Yes, your payout takes a hit. But you also get a big lump payment from that lifetime payout.
To put in perspective my first round in the auction is giving me about 6 million hbs. My daily payout will likely drop about 50k, but it gets back up to where it was within 2 to 3 weeks.
Plus that auction payout gets me quick money, easy to turn into IVs.Thanked by 1Mensie -
At the end of the month, I sort my show horses by POINTS EARNED THIS YEAR. I jumped to the end of the list - it shows me who is earning the least amount of points - those get culled. It can give you an idea of which levels earn better.
-
I see. So, if I'm starting at the top to narrow down, would this be a helpful pattern:
Sort first by age targeting all at 10+ years, look at points earned this year and cull the ones not earning points. Then look at levels for the ones remaining and if I'm understanding correctly, cull the ones showing at local levels?
I have some oldies that would have a auction payout because they are 19+ but their daily payout is 150-250 a day. Would you cull or keep those?Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056 -
Looks like we were posting at the same time. So, PTY would be at the end of the year (duh, me). I'll focus on age and levels today then.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

It takes a bit longer on the big barns but I do tend to look at show records. I look for the poor placers, those placing last place get the boot. If you click the link on the Show Record page for their most recent class, you can see how they placed and what they earned for points. The mare above only earned 0.5 point for her class.
In this mares record, you can see she earned 16 points for her class.

If you compare levels, a 1st place in 8L earns 5.5 points. A first place in 7W earns 32 points. This also means a horse that places 14 out of 17 in a 7W class is still earning more points than a horse that wins in an 8L class.
When I want to cull quickly by barn, I just select all the 8L horses and send to auction. I'm sure I lose some better earners but it helps me cull faster. When i had smaller barns, I looked at each individual horse. It would be impossible for me to do that now.
Most of my 2nd gen horses end up in the 7W level, and then creep over to 8L. Thats why I started culling at that level. -
Thank you SO much for your help. I shouldn't have waited until I have this many show horses to start culling. Lol. I have a lot of work ahead of me. But at least now I'm not going in blind with it all.Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056

I always go by the horses age. It the horse has less than 2,500hbs and is under 10 I will send to auction.
I expect my 3yo to have at least 3,500 . If a horse doesn't have as many payout as it's age " 7yo 7,000 plus life time payout" I will decide to sell or auction. I will only keep a show horse if it meets it's age in payout or higher. So if that 7yo only had 4,500 life time then I would deem him not worthy and re-home or auction him. -
"I have some oldies that would have a auction payout because they are 19+ but their daily payout is 150-250 a day. Would you cull or keep those?"
I have the same question as menstrosity. For example, this horse's payout is only $4k, but daily is ~190. But he could die any time. Is it better to keep or auction the oldies, regardless of their payout?

I never auction old horses and just wait until they pass away. They give a significant boost to my daily bonus!I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. You could hang onto the 19yr olds until they die but if you need the room, they can still go. I try to cull a few each month if they don't pass, especially the ones not earning points. When they have 3k to 4k in points, they are hard to auction. But i slowly cull then still.
-
Due to my job, I just let the oldies pass away. I have a hard time finding time to breed horses as it is.

I love that 7W level, she is an oldie and still placing well!
-
Yeah, she makes a good argument for why not all horses should be culled at 10. I reckon she's made me far more money over her lifetime than if I had auctioned her off at 10 since she contributes towards the daily bonus.
-
I don’t auction until they level off :)I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

Oh for sure, not everything over 10, but 10 years old and at 8L showing, cull those. I keep my 7Ws, those are money makers. And your high PT horses with 12 and 13 PT score are past 8L by 10 years old.
But my focus was that anything at 10 years old should be start of culling, never anything younger. Lifetime payout is a huge thing, plus it helps keep server load down.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix
