Is everyone okay?
-
For the non-U.S. people, last night was really, really bad. EF4 and EF5 tornadoes ripped through several states killing dozens of people and injuring/trapping hundreds more. We also had the first quad-state tornado in U.S. history. My family and I are all safe and only got severe thunderstorms. I wanted to check to see if everyone else is okay. I’ve been praying for everyone hit by the tornadoes all night and I’ll definitely keep praying. I hope everyone is okay!I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

Crazy night here but we still have power and no damage to our property that I have seen yet. I'll take a walk later and see the what the neighborhood looks like.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I was on the north end of it and only got a snowstorm and thundersnow. I woke up and saw the news, the destruction is insane.
Hoping my hajinc family and their families are safeThanked by 1Nightphoenix -
We’re getting hit with storms this afternoon in lower Alabama and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw tornado watches, but praying nothing serious. Such a tragedy!Thanked by 1Nightphoenix

With living IN the Appalachains / Shenandoah Valley we usually get spared the Vortex from the winds , but we have had gusts well over 50 last night and we are under wind watch again todayThanked by 1Nightphoenix

Glad to hear that you're ok, Ammit. Hope everyone else is ok too. Best wishes to all.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix

Here in north-east PA the storm is reduced to a day of rain with a high wind advisory from about 5 PM to 1 AM, according to the forecast. I will be keeping those in the seriously affected areas in my prayers.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix

Looking at the radar, it looks like it's horseshoeing around us here in Maryland.. we prepped by getting the animals hunkered down with plenty of hay and moving a bunch of light things that could fly into cars and our house but now it doesn't look like we're going to get much of anythingThanked by 1Nightphoenix

My weather radio went off all evening long, and the city sirens went off 4 different times. We're about 15 miles away from where the big Amazon warehouse was just ripped apart (it's on all the news channels). It was scary, but I really think the whole 'heat island' effect saves us from a lot of the wilder storms, they mostly break up and go around the city, then re form in Illinois.
My father was a very big wig in our small town Missouri hometown, and he was referred to as 'Pastor Disaster' for his civil defense work. I was dubbed 'Daughter Disaster' and got stuck spending many nights at the civil defense center in Sedalia, MO as a kid!

I've just been over on another forum, viewing drone footage from Mayfield and the Amazon warehouse. It must have been utterly terrifying being in the middle of that. I'm surprised anyone is still alive in Mayfield, it looks like a war zone.
Shocking.

@confluencestables that sounds so cool, were you and your dad close?

I'm in the UK and saw Nightphoenix's post yesterday. It was on the news yesterday evening with pictures of the Amazon warehouse. Dreadful destruction, I don't know how anyone survived. I've seen occasional documentaries about hurricanes and tornadoes. Is this event unusually bad? It seems as if it is.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix
-
@WhiteValley The event itself is not unusual, but stuff like this usually happens in March, April, or May. For a tornado outbreak this bad to happen in December is pretty unexpected.
I noticed Friday night that the barometric pressure in my area dropped to about 29.6, and I’ve rarely seen it drop below 29.8, so I knew something nasty was going to happen…I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. @White Valley it's usual to get a handful of tornadoes at a time over maybe one or two states depending on where it is, but this particular night there were about a dozen tornadoes including 1 EF4-5 (highest you can go) that was a mile wide and on the ground for over 230 miles and 4 states, which is a suspected world record.
A couple years ago we had an EF0 go right through my town, it was on the ground for maybe a mile, but still knocked out a few roofs and a lot of trees. Nothing remotely close to Friday night. And that happened July in the afternoon so we knew it was coming.Thanked by 1Nightphoenix -
Boredaf, my dad and I were close, but nothing fancy. He was a Lutheran minister, so yeah, I'm a preacher kid!
We had a tornado hit our house when I was in high school, trashed the garage and half of the living room, but the rest of the house was ok. You kind of become numb, or maybe just get used to it. The first time I experienced an earthquake when I moved to Los Angeles after college freaked me out big time, though! The folks there just took it in stride but panicked when I told them about tornados. It's just what your are most familiar with, I guess!

@confluencestable well respect for actually doing something to help his community I can't stand empty virtue signalling
Haha I get that, Like I said I live up north and we're always amused when newyork and mass freak out about 'blizzards' (they get like 3 inches of snow) that won't even get you a snow day up here. Cali can keep the earthquakes and wildfires though I want no part of that, ground should stay flat where it belongs.Licensed for:

So many thoughts and prayers (as well as aid!) are coming from Oklahoma. I live about 10-15 miles from Moore, which is where the last EF5 tornado struck back in 2013. I drove through that area about a week after it hit and remember the wreckage all too well.
For those not familiar, storm season for most of the central US goes from about March to July. Tornadoes in December are not completely unheard of — on average there’s about 25 reported during the whole month of December. There were at least 22 tornadoes reported Friday night ALONE. The EF5 is the first one of its severity level since the Moore, OK tornado, which touched down in May of 2013. For comparison to the information in ichigo’s post, Moore was on the ground for 37 minutes and only traveled 17 miles before dissipating. So Friday’s traveled almost 14 times further and stayed on the ground 8 times longer, which is absolutely unprecedented.
Apologies for throwing out a bunch of information, working property & casualty insurance in Oklahoma made for a slight obsession with the weather. :-$ Statistics and numbers aside, I’m glad everyone is reported whole and safe so far. <3Fallen Farms - Grigorian Warmbloods - ID 264430

Don't apologise for being obsessed about the weather. It is a standing joke that we Brits are so reserved, that we will only strike up a conversation with a stranger to talk about the weather! Although we get a lot of varied weather, we don't get anything like some of what the USA suffers. On the other hand, we have been told to expect more extreme weather events because of global warming. You can't fight Mother Nature when she lets loose.

Birmingham seems to be tornado central for the uk according to Wikipedia (sorry, having trouble linking to article).
Glad I moved from there many years ago! The English Midlands are fairly flat, so it's a good place for these things to form. Unfortunately we're not real big on having basements over here, so if we get an f5 we'll be in big trouble.Post edited by Arkham at 2021-12-13 02:07:58 -
Oklahoma has the unfortunate luck of getting wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes, snowstorms, and the occasional remnants of a hurricane or two! Wild weather loves us! :))
For reference, if you don’t have a basement, get into the most interior room you can (in the US, this is usually a closet or bathroom) and try to get something heavy over you for protection. Here in Oklahoma, I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building that doesn’t have a basement. In the couple times we’ve had close calls, the cats and I get into my bathtub and the mattress goes over top. It’s a pain to move back once the threat passes, but it’s worth it to stay safe! If you’re driving when the warning comes through, don’t try to outrun it. Pull the car into the ditch on the side of the road (NOT under a bridge or overpass), keep yourself buckled in, and tuck your head down.Fallen Farms - Grigorian Warmbloods - ID 264430

As an avid ( obessessed ) foster mom of many many kittens and puppers ; ALL of the local shelters in the areas hit are under incredable duress at the moment; the non damaged areas are stepping up and pulling pets from the shelter in order to allow pets that have suffered a loss of home to have a safe place until they can be re united with their families ; There are several groups on FB at are helping and have wish lists ; from "cash" cards to garbage bags to water ; if you can please help :)

I live in a very rocky region of canada so tornados are unheard of. We got a lot of snow today. Nearby theres been floods from snow melting, highways being washed out from snow melting. But i hope all of you are okay!ID # 273464

Well it's the north's turn for crazy weather. Up here in WI we have wind advisories with sustained winds up to 60mph and gusts at 80. It's about 50 degrees out (record high for December) so I hope it's not hot enough for tornadoes. There's thunder and lightning and big puffs of wind already, but the worst is supposed to happen around midnight-1am. I'd 100% take a 24inch blizzard and -10F over 50's and tornadoes in December, thanks....
-
I'm in WI too ichigo, and this wind is nuts. Last time we had a windstorm like this, half the trees in my neighborhood were missing branches or knocked down entirely. D: And tomorrow it's supposed to drop to 20 and everything is going to freeze into black ice. And then snow on Friday!
I am not looking forward to leaving the house for the rest of the week... -
I work at home and am on covid lockdown until Saturday so I got that going for me at least lol
When we had the tornado a couple years ago a huge branch from my neighbors elm narrowly missed landing on my house, and the building next to my house is in the process of being torn down so I really hope no parts of that building end up on or in my property... -
I'm right next door in Minnesota, literally like 30 minutes from the WI border, and yeah the wind is a little crazy already. I honest to dog didn't know tornadoes in December where possible anywhere in the US, much less here. I maybe kind of hit a third of a tree on the way home an hour ago, so stuff is already coming down here! I didn't see it in the street through the rain and dark until I was right on it, but thankfully I drive a truck and it did not care :))Spiderweb Stables

Sometime it takes Major acts of Mother Nature to remind us we better clean up the yard lol ; am glad everyone is OK ; batten down the Hatches ; this winter is gonna be Wild!
-
We made it through! To make life even harder today was trash day and I'm proud to say my cans didn't leave the yard and were retrieved timely lol but a good bunch of branches landed in my yard plus some orange construction fence from a block over.... A bit north of me there's a lot of power outages and trees down but my little town doesn't seem too worse for wear
I'm glad Minnesota made it out well too! The biggest worry was the ice but I haven't seen any reports of bad ice here or across the Mississippi.Post edited by ichigo at 2021-12-16 07:12:55 -
Oh poop, trash day! Thanks ichigo, I'm gonna go drag my cans down to the curb!

I'm in CO and we just had unbelievable winds on Wednesday.... over 100 mph gusts and lots of damage. Several downed trees in my neighborhood, and on the highway a ways south from my home we had 8-9 semis blown over.

When this had hit it cause high wind advisory here in NYS the place I keep my horses ended up with the indoor area roof/barn coming off in peices. Thankfully no horses were hurt. We lost power for most of that night and day after. Trees and power lines were down and some accidents due to wind blowing cars off the road. I could only imagine the states that got hit with these tornados.
