You've purchased the Basic Upgrade and the game is automatically training your horses for you.

Also, foals always say "needs trained," but in fact they cannot be trained at all until they are 2. Their training will start in May with the new game year.

And don't feel bad about having to ask. Quite a few new players miss noticing this perk of the upgrade and have to ask about it. :)

Indeed there is! I've been playing this game since January 2011, and I still find out something new I hadn't known before from time to time.
