How Do You Price Straws?
  • I have 163 Stallions in my "Stallions barn" that I'd like to offer straws up publicly. I've been going through and trying to organize my stallions by fully testing them (minus a few old favorites), tattooing them, and adding notes. I'm curious as to how in the world you guy's price your straws? This includes things from just having Pearl, DP, KP to Watercolor, Chocolate, Ice etc. Any hints and tips would greatly be appreciated! ❤
  • I look up similar studs in the horse search for an idea of the general price range, then take into account the higher vet costs when one uses a straw($3000, as opposed to the $1000 vet bill from live cover), and add the profit I want to make(based on that research) to the straw collection fee. Each gene has different rarity and demand, so that has a big influence. I generally only advertise straws from my stallions with rare or expensive(fantasy) genes, and put the others up for live cover.
It also helps to check the forum now and then to see if any of your stallions fit what someone is looking for, then offer straws to those individuals.

  • There is a guide someone had posted in the discussion group a bit ago regarding how to price a horse.
For instance they started at the bone basics is the horse consistent? An exceptional create? If so add 500 for each . Then comes the genes and how rare they are and if your horse is homozygous or heterozygous for the gene and of course what's in high demand . I tend to price mine off of hard to get genes vs the ones you see frequently in the creates. Also If you've boosted them it tends to increase the price.

    5percent boosted.

I add 500 per common gene. At a base he is already at 1,000hbs with 11 common genes that brings him to 6,500hbs. Now for not so common genes "depending on the rarity" I would add 1,000 to 5,000hbs per strand.
Nd1 1,000 , DP 3,000 each and sooty plus often goes 5,000 to 10,000 per strand . So after adding genes to this stallion my average would be 23,500-30,000hbs . Now he is also 5percent boosted so that would also make an increase on his value some people add 4,000-10,000hbs more for the boost so if he were starting to limited horses and was new on the market he would probably value for $30,000 - $40,000 . But he has many foals has an older era and is 19 so over time his value had decreased as new younger limited stallions have hit the market. Each year I would slowly drop his price as he isn't as new or rare lined anymore .

If I can find the post for you I will post it here for you to see the whole list. It's a very good list to go by.
  • Oh! Perfect thank you!❤
