Real life color questions
-
I would like everyone's opinion on a horses color background if at all possible, but HOW do I had ad photos from my computer?
-
Are you aware you can get genetic testing done for real? Then it's not just a matter of opinions, you know for sure. :)
https://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/horse.php All you have to do is send them some hair samples plucked from the horse's mane & pay the fee. (Assuming you have access to the horse in question.)
As to the pictures, you have to load them on a picture hosting service - like photobucket or such. Then you can link from there to here. There's no way to upload straight from your computer. -

Yes she's not my horse, I have a guess.. she's trying to determine what exactly to test for. I know she's an Araloosa (sp?) Her owner swears she changes color like 5 times a year. Her mother was a Leopard.. her full brother is a leopard. With everyone here who knows so much about genetics, I figured this would be a great place to ask. I have the owners permission to use her FB photos for this

Looks brindle to me, but appy can do some really funky stuff.
And yes, they can appear to change color with every season. I had a bay appy who did that. She's look almost buckskin one season, then go to mahogany the next.
Appies are weird. :)Post edited by Gael4ce at 2017-05-08 18:10:59 -
Mother and Georgia as a foal :

Full Brother: -
All the rest of these are Georgia:

These are other photos of her, but can't verify when. Owner doesn't remember exactly when taken

Wow, she does kind of look like a brindle... Beautiful horse, whatever color she is! :)
-
She looks like a bay varnish to me whether or not she is brindle, based on the foal picture compared to the adult ones. Beautiful horse.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses in all the fancy colors.

Bay varnish roan brindle is what I would call her. It looks a lot like classic roan brindlePost edited by TawnyEclipse at 2017-05-09 05:15:29ID 213454

Brindle is just a look. If a horse looks brindle it's brindle. I would guess the stripes are just temporary and will fade with age.
But she is a bay varnish appaloosa in color.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Do any of you think she could carry the PATN1 gene like her mother? or whatever real life gene would cause the snowflake look? What would cause her to be an app but not have the blanket? White factor? I know the real genetics and game genetics have changed much since I started playing.
IF she were yours and you were going to pay to have her tested, what would you test for? -
There is no understood genetic mechanism for snowflake in real life. It's a variant of varnish is all we know. She is not snowflake in any way.
PATN1 increases blanket size. She does not appear to have a copy. Dam is not a true leopard at all. Nor is the brother. Both were born with blankets and have varnished out to look leopard.
I would not bother to testher unless you wanted to know black/red status or agouti status. There is nothing really of question to test here.Post edited by Ammit at 2017-05-09 13:33:17Need to contact me? Read this first.

I would DNA test her but I think testing is fun :P
PATN1 is super confusing with seeing some of the test results of horses who are starting to be tested for it. I would say that the dam and brother both have it, but test them to know for sure. I would say test the mare as well.
This mare is tested heterozygous PATN1(EeaALplpgg) and you wouldn't really think so just by looking at herID 213454 -
This guy is also heterozygous for PATN1. I bet as he roans out more spots will appear, similar to how OP fillies mother/brother likely did.Post edited by TawnyEclipse at 2017-05-09 11:59:16ID 213454

PATN1 isn't a switch to just make a horse a leopard. It's just a blanket size booster. Pretty straight forward incomplete penetrance. You can get solids with PATN1 but they are only one end of the bell curve.Need to contact me? Read this first.

@TawnyEclipse what would you test for though is her question.Need to contact me? Read this first.

You guys pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. I think she is going to end up ordering Appaloosa Panel 1 and possibly the roan test.
Thank you do much for all your help. I'll update if/when results come in.
-
I would test for all the things! But I'm strange that way (you should see everything I tested my mare for). Realistically, and the cheapest way, would be agouti and patn1 (possibly extension). To me, the dam looks chestnut which would make her Ee, hard to say about the agouti status so A?, we know she's LPlp and it would be interesting to know if she is het PATN1. And again, because I like testing. I would also run the 'arab' and 'stock horse' disease panels if the parents are not tested.ID 213454

No point in ordering roan. Waste of money as no reason to think either parent has it. Not in arab, very rare in App.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Agreed, neither patent appears to be classic roan, so she can't be classic roan. She's likely just an odd patterned varnish roan. There is some brindle in horses but its very rare and doesn't really look like her.
