Kidding season has officially arrived!
-
I know some of you like seeing the baby goats that are born here..
This morning we has twin bucklings born!
Unfortunately one was stillborn..
But Dudley here is doing great. We pull and bottle feed most of our babies for show purposes (less damage to the udder).. His mother however has zero maternal instincts so unfortunately if we ever have a season we do not want to bottle feed, her babies may always need to be bottle fed.
The fight now is getting him to take the bottle... for some reason bucklings are so much dumber than doelings so it's to be expected. Boys almost always take longer to get to take the bottle vs doelings. But he'll give in before I do. :-)) -
He's so fluffy!
-
Congrats! And, sorry for your loss of the other baby.
He’s adorable and so precious :x -
Oh my he was s adorable!

Kidding season here too (oberhasli). 4 does kidded, 5 kids on the ground already, 1 in labor right now, and then 11 more after her. Phew. Plus, my horse just bucked me off yesterday and i'm in a knee immobilizer.
The magic is somewhat gone at this point. I despite the initial few feedings, getting covered in colostrum, smelling like placenta...yuck. Love the kids, but once they are a few days old.Thanked by 1Xzeina -
@lecobb8 I am sooo glad I'm not the only one feeling this way right now!
3 weeks ago my horse fell on ice and has been stall ridden since...
My pet Nigerian is in one birthing stall, my Grade Alpine doe is in the kid barn because my Mini Zebu is in the other stall (im an idiot and wanted a mini cow with no real place to put him and my Hackney mare hates him so he cant be with the horses).. I had 3 does due on 2/14 but this little guy wanted to be early.
So between trying to get this butthead on the bottle (still... he's hungry but has absolutely no idea how to suckle.. bucklings are so much fun 8-| ),
I'm also sticky and swear I've taken 3 showers today because I wore more colostrum than what went into his stomach which ultimately makes me want to cry, my barn overalls and jacket smell horrible of placenta, and I'm going to be up all night trying to get him to take a bottle and watching stall cameras.
Breeding show goats is not for the faint of heart! I honestly hate trying to preserve udders and would much rather dam raise... Thankfully my Nigerian will be dam raising so that's that many less bottle babies and I have a break after these 3 until Mid March when my Boer does kid... and then one beginning of April and one end of May and I'll be done for the seasonThanked by 1Xzeina -
I WON!
4:20am, he finally suckled I-)Thanked by 1Xzeina -
Perseverance succeeds! Way to go!
So do we call you a midwife or a daddy?Thanked by 1Xzeina -

@Elsniffy we're still trying to figure out where the color comes from... its call is Sundgau (Sund gow).. from what I understand, goat colors are similar to Horse colors... His mom is black so she carries no coat Modifiers. His dad is Cou Blanc (Coo Blanc) so we were expecting little Cou Blanc babies but then he pops out Sundgau and there's no Sundgau in his dad's 4 lined pedigree but it's carried somewhere.. his grandmother and grandfather are both Cou Blanc. His great grandparents are either Cou Blanc or Two Tone Chamoisee (shamwahzay)... so the Sundgau has been carried and not expressed for quite some time now! I own his grandmother and great grandmother and a friend owns his grandfather and his great grandfather belonged to one of the top Alpine breeders in the country and was born back in 1993 (AI made his grandfather possible)Thanked by 1Xzeina

Mine that was in labor went at 3 am. I had said earlier in the day that I thought she may only have a single....quads. One stillborn doe kid seems to have set off a slightly early labor, because the other kids seem a little undercooked. Two doe kids born on their own, and I had to go fishing for the stupid boys. Mom is struggling. Retained placenta, lots of TLC needed, she's just bumming around. Thankfully, I had a buyer who wanted to come get the 2 boys right after their second feeding. I can't complain about that!Thanked by 1Xzeina

@Treble they are pets first before they are show goats. I also use their milk to make soaps and my oldest daughter is lactose intolerant but since goats milk protein is different than cows milk protein, she can drink goats milk.
These are two of my yearlings from last year. They both went to the ADGA Sanctioned show at Frederick Fair here in Maryland back in September. My husband didn't get any photos of Rose (two toned American Alpine) in the ring but she came out first in her class and was highly considered for Reserve Jr Champion. But because her lines are unfortunately slow growing (blossoms at about 2 years old), she was small for her age and the judge gave it to the 2nd place 2 year old dry doe.
Winter (White 50% Alpine) was in such a large class and no one was cooperating because it was so hot, the judge literally picked his top 3 and told everyone else to fall in line -

Aaawwwwwww! They are so gorgeous especially the girl! Although I love the 2 boys coloring and how they look! You make me want to start raising goats lol.
-
@wolvevenfrost it's definitely fun and rewarding but a lot to keep up with... my initial thought before getting my first goat was that they were cheap and easy animals, until I did my research and realized just how wrong I was :))
Copper deficiency
Worm load
Parasite resistance to dewormers
Calcium:Phosphorus ratios for boys so they don't get stones
Kidding problems
Hoof trimming
I can keep going but you get the idea lol -
@KhaosAcres yea nothing comes without a cost thats for sure! That's why I'm plenty fine with the sheep on my cousins family ranch I live on. I don't have any pictures of the herd at all because I can't get close but I have a picture of a baby girl I helped take care of along with the dog's, chickens, rabbit's, and feeding the sheep and llama they have when they were gone for 2 weeks. She was the most precious little terd lol. Sadly she got too attached and wouldn't join the herd so they had to sell her.
-
This second one is the last picture I had of her before she went to another home with a lady.Post edited by Wolvevenfrost at 2022-02-20 15:48:29 -
@wolvevenfrost she's beautiful! I've been wanting Shetland Sheep but my husband keeps saying not right now. And I get it, we need to the fields and shelters set up for what we have first and then work the sheep in but it's still soooo hard to wait lol
-
@KhaosAcres yea being here makes me really, really, really want my own plot of land around my own house (hopefully I'll be in my first house at the end of this year! Can't wait!) And own my own little herd of sheep. My dream (and also my moms) is to own lots of land and a nice house to where we have a well, farmland, solar, and animals (basically self sustaining). We want cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, horses, and maybe some exotics if all the rest is there. And of course different types and variations with each one too.
Of course only if we win the lottery or both have an amazing paying job with amazing savings. But hey, one can dream. Hopefully said dream will become true. I'd love to own, manage, and live on a ranch/ farm of my own.
Oh almost forgot about the tall brick wall that will completely surround the property. It being tall is mainly (only) for my escape doggos. Lol -
Wow honestly glad I'm not the only one who thinks bucklings have no idea how to survive.
-
Unfortunately yesterday at 12:30pm, we lost our little Dudley... he came down sick last week and despite our best efforts, he was just too sick and exhausted to fight any longer.. my heart is broken =((
-
@KhaosAcres oh no! He was such a handsome cute little bean too....I'm so sorry for your loss. =((
❤RIP little bean Dudley.❤ -
Aww it's so hard to lose the babies, that's the downside of raising animals and it never seems to get any easier.
We have sheep currently, we had 2 goats a la mancha and a sanaan that we got from a bad situation, unfortunately the la mancha had CL and had to be euthanized and the sanaan was a beloved pet for a couple years until the damage from her early years caught up to her, the vet said she probably had bone marrow damage due to starvation and excessive worm load as a baby. At least she had a few years of happiness. We miss her a lot, it's been a while now and this year I'm thinking I am finally ready to add some Nigerians for milk, I miss having goats!Starstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest

Just wanted to update on the kids...
I want to say thank you for the kind words about Dudley! It has gotten easier but still hurts... I'm getting someone to crochet me my little Dudley, his little stuffie will come home end of June/July!
We had our first show of the year yesterday we took one of our bucklings that was born on April 6th and he did amazing!
Komplete Khaos Acres Aspen brought home :
1st - 2x
2nd - 1x
Jr Reserve Grand Champion - 1x
Jr Grand Champion - 2x
He unfortunately missed Best Of Breed when going against 2-4 year olds because he was (in their words) missing in maturity which blows because putting babies against full grown adults, they are set up for automatic failure due to lack of maturity BUT it makes sense and he was given high praises and excitement for what he turns out to be in the future. He was so well behaved and got compliments from all 3 judges on his demeanor compared to the other babies he went up against (one of which got loose 2 times).
I can't wait to see what this boy turns into!
Aspen and his unnamed brother
We also got to meet one of the bigger named breeders in the Alpine world which was so cool! We talked with them almost the entire time we were there and there were times the husband actively seeked us out just to talk! He is going to let us have some straws from his 2x reserve grand champion best of breed buck they brought yesterday who we absolutely fell in love with! He is an absolute monster of a buck who dwarfed literally every goat at the show but was an absolute doll!
Rainbow colors bred (I didn't catch his full registered name unfortunately)
The buck in front of him is a normal sized buckPost edited by LEAcres at 2022-05-16 08:17:05
