Large Updates/Improvements to pastures
  • I have been doing a large number of updates to pastures the past few weeks, a combination of closing some exploits, fixing some bugs, and getting images generating smoothly.

Here is what you need to know:
An exploit in the game allowed users to create unlimited foundation mares, breed them in pastures and then auction both the mares and foals back to the game 3 times a week to produce a large amount of HBs. This was not just hard on the server but also damaging to the game's economy. To close this exploit pastures have been capped in the number of foals you can breed in them each season. A pasture can produce 3 times the number of foals as its size. (30 foals per 10-acre pasture, 300 per 100-acre pasture etc. ) Pastures have always been intended to be used once per season (hence the 30-day boost) so this is just bringing that more in line with how they are supposed to be used.

Not sure how to make your breeding work now? Ask if you need some help figuring this change out.

There were a bunch of issues with images being tagged as needing full from scratch image creation when they already had an image. This has been fixed and should mean way faster refresh times on your imaged. If an image is stuck and not showing an update you may need to reroll it.

Foals born in pastures will now automatically have their images generated in the background. Depending on your upgrade level and how busy the server is this can take a few minutes or a few hours. All pasture foals go into a giant line to get their images. Foals owned by premium accounts go to the front of the line, foals owned by basic accounts go next, and then free accounts. (Don't want to wait? You can always open your foal's page and have the image generated right away. This is only for background generation.) Higher-level upgrades get to cut in front of lower levels as a perk of supporting the game, but everyone will get their images eventually.

I did notice an issue yesterday with some barns producing thousands of foals in a single day and holding up the queue for hours. A new change was implemented this morning where if you have over 500 in the automatic image generation queue all new foals you produce will have to wait at the back of the line. They will still get images but they have to wait for all the smaller barns to get theirs first.
-Specifically how this works is you will be given a warning under your "Breed This Pasture" button, informing you that you have over 500 foals in the queue. You can choose to wait or breed the pasture anyways (100% ok to do). If you breed the pasture anyways all foals in that specific pasture will get flagged for delayed generation. Basically, those foals let everyone else cut in line in front of them. That way you can breed all the foals you want at one time without negatively impacting anyone else.

If you want to see the current status of the automatic image generation queue you can go to the "Who is Online Link." It is located in your user profile information drop-down next to the chat and PM icons in the top left. This will tell you not only how many foals the game is working on right now but how many you have to go.

Final note, I have been doing work on gray this week (because a chrome update broke the tack editor and I had to wait for SysAdmin Haystack to be home to fix the issue). Expect some gray news soon!

  • Yay! I’m so excited for the gray update :D
I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!
  • Thank you for the careful explanation of the pasture updates and the reason behind them, Ammit. They make a lot of sense to me.

  • Thank you for your hard work! :x I'm excited for grey as well. The pictures generating have been working well for me so far, too.
  • Thank you for all the programming time! Writing Code can be such a PITA! It was kinda cool to see the red warning about my foal pictures; but its not something I really worry about until all my testing is done or I d end up keeping WAY too many lol

  • So, each individual pasture is capped, not the total number of foals? I've struggled to breed since the drop down menus were removed, but the last couple of seasons I've had a good strategy and been breeding and into it more. But this will bring most of that to a big halt.
My mares live in bigger pastures and I take them out to breed in a couple of smaller pastures, which I use a number of times for this. With each pasture being only able to be used once (although I understand it's x3 for this season) I'm going to stuggle to try and breed my mares in pastures. The amount of shuffling so I can use an unbred pasture just won't be worth it.
I would be fine for it to be a total number cap rather than each individual pasture, wouldn't that be the same outcome for you?

  • Just breed them in the big pasture. It is no more work at all to breed horses in a big pasture than in a small one. You literally have multiple large spare pastures sitting empty you can move mares into. I have looked over your pastures and you have a huge amount of empty space. I also know you have not even tried breeding yet this season. ;)

  • Here are some stats taken from Bluegrass. (originally posted in the FB group):

I have counters now which means I can monitor how much people actually use each pasture. So far only two people on bluegrass have used more than 100 foals slots in the primary pasture. (104 for one user and 150) for another. No one is even close to using the 3x foal count.

In nonprimary pastures, I have one pasture that has been used for 131 foals and another for 186. Again not even close to the cap. No one else has used it more than 100 times.
On my size 10 pastures, I have only 4 (out of almost 3k) that have been used for more than 10 foals. (12,17,20 and 20 each for those).

In 30 acre pastures, only 2 have more than 30 foals (31 and 59)

In 60 acre pastures, not a single one has more than 60 foals.

This is VERY conclusive evidence that it is absolutely not a burden on players to reduce the number of foals per pasture. No one is getting close to that 3x cap.

Obviously, I will check this again later in the season but as of right now there is zero evidence that this change is being burdensome to even a single bluegrass player.

    ______

And just a bit more info. For my basic upgrade users on bluegrass, they have 60 acres in the pasture. Only two users have used more than 60 ( out of the 180) and that was for 61 and 64 foals.

Of my free users who can do up to 30 foals in the pasture only two people have used more than 10 slots for a total of 12 and 22 foals each.

  • Yes I have plenty of pastures, I haven't bred anything this season as I just bought a new property and have been moving, I still have no power, but most of my (real) horses are moved!

My favourite way of breeding is just utilising the little pastures for breeding, I can still do it with x3 but you said you'd like it to be x1 eventually. I never breed big pastures multiple times, I rarely breed in the big pastures at all

  • I never said that. I said I was reserving the right to do that if I needed to and that I would be observing the change over several seasons to see how it impacted the server and the game. It has never ever been my plan to lock them down to x1. You have tons of empty pasture space you can use. At least try this change before making all these assumptions.

  • Ugh I usually drag all of my mares into the pasture to breed because it's cheaper, I only keep mares that have levelled off in a bad place in the pasture.
I'm pretty sure I have more than 180 mares now, this is going to bump up my expenses. Not sure how this is going to affect my game going forward. Guess I'll just have to be poor...

Fun fact, when I started this account, many years ago, I decided I was going to experiment. Back then I think you started with a 20 stall barn and a 10 mare 1 stallion pasture. So I decided I would see how long it would take me to be able to afford a basic upgrade with just those 20 stalls (no horse selling allowed).turns out it took me just over 9 months.
We didn't have the beginners perks that we do now back then, so I'm kind of tempted to do the same thing again.

  • We had a contest where people raced to do the same thing a few years ago. I think they could do it in just a few weeks now.

The answer to not having enough money is always getting more show horses. :D

  • The restricted game was actually kind of fun. I'm starting a space game based on the original Elite which will have me struggling for a long time. there's even a 'hard' mode *gasp*. Lol.
