Image Generator Updates - Grey et all.
  • My plan the past week or so was to work on the tack editor but a series of technical issues meant I had to put that on hold. Because of that, I had some surprise free programming time and I decided to use it by working on gray generation. While working on gray I also saw a tweak that I felt made every horse in the game look better.

    How does gray work now?
Gray foals are now born with hyperpigmentation and gray googles. Horses progressively dapple and gray out as they age with hom. gray horses aging a bit faster than het. gray horses.

Why are all the dapples the same? What about fleabites and blood marks?
I only had enough time to get gray generation to this point. Gray is a HUGE process, and like when we did appy generation I am going to have to put updates for it out in waves as I have time to work on it. Right now the dapples are static and the same for every horse, fleabites and blood marks are also not working yet. I wanted to get something presentable out now, it is already way better than what we had, but it is still a long way off from what I would like to see it end up as. I would love to see gray finished before the end of 2022.

What is the "every horse" tweak?
Saturation has been slightly bumped to help balance out the recent yellow bump we had. I feel this makes the horse images more engaging and pleasing to look at. It also helps make pangare and other lightning markings more effective looking. I did my best to test this but, sometimes, until you put it out in the wild it can be hard to get a good feel for a low-level system-wide change.

    Reroll currently required.
Both the new gray update and the bumped saturation require a full reroll, not just an image refresh to show. There is no way to make these changes show up without fully regenerating a horse's texture map. If you just refresh grays right now you will see a change but it will be a hybrid between the old images and the new ones. I am open to suggestions on the issue of how or if we should force update to the new gray system. Happy to hear what people think is the best way to go about it. (We will not be force updating every horse in the game. That is totally unnecessary.)

    Feedback?
Finally, if you have feedback either on the gray update or the saturation update let me know! I am very open to what you all have to say on the issue.

Important note that gray does NOT work in the advanced tack editor yet. I will be adding that when I do the next round of updates on it.

  • @Maribo, the Onyx looks correct to me. You are seeing the palomino layer being revealed by the onyx markings. The first one is mushroom and satin which can do funny things, and the pangere plus which is really showing those yellow underlayers.

Here is a horse with the same genetics minus the p+ and the satin.

Same minus satin with the p+

Same but with satin and no p+
    image
    12429828

It looks to me like the p+ need adjusted that it is causing the primary issue here with satin perhaps contributing to it a bit as well.

I agree the buckskin doesn't look right to me but I actually think he is not nearly yellow enough. He looks very red to me. When I pull him into photoshop he falls deep into the orange-red territory.

Some of the buckskins are a bit yellower than I like, but it may also be a matter of getting used to the change

@Maribo I made a dupe of that first horse you posted (minus satin) and tweaked the p+ expression. I think this looks more correct. Let me know what you think.

@Starstruck2 I don't agree at all that they are too yellow. I think they are too dark.

  • Yeah, it may be more the intensity of the color than the actual shade, I am not really a color person LOL

I also switched from my phone to the computer and it's less overwhelming on the computer screen, so that also impacts it

  • I'm loving the new gray! I can't find any black horses in my barns young enough to show some good strong dapples, but the red based ones that I've rerolled so far are looking great. I wish I could see what the new gray would look like on this nacre mare when she was a year or two younger. The bit of color still showing through the dapples is so pretty!

  • When it comes to the tint and saturation changes, I'm happy in some cases and sad in some. I was a bit worried when it was announced that the buckskins would be yellower and richer from now on. I really loved this sort of steely grayish look to some of my browns and was hoping I could breed for that.

Here's a before and after example, I loved this dynamic, almost cool, steely color:
    image

And this is what he looks like after a reroll. Not the look I wanted to breed for at all. I wouldn't have chosen him for one of my main 2G stallions for this line looking like this:
    image
    2G Morels Corduroy X

But on the other hand, I wasn't overly thrilled with the overall look of this boy before. It was a bit too redish:
    image

And now it has a much more subtle sort of gold glow to it and the dapples are richer. So this was a happy change:
    image
    3G Morels Weapon

Maybe this is partly down to the chance of the particular rerolls, not the overall image generation change itself. If I rerolled a few more times, maybe they could look slightly more similar to what they did before? I'm interested to see more of how this line looks with the new color changes, since it has a lot of cream and pangare+.
  • Here's another surprising reroll. She lost all of that subtle, cool-tinted, washed out look and became very warm colored and yellowish. I kind of like it in this case, though it is very different than the soft look I was going for originally.

  • Man I've waited for the grays to get updated since that newsletter that very first mentioned it and OH boy OH boy! I'm thrilled so far! Even though it's the same it's still so good! :x Ammit you really are amazing!

  • When I first started playing this game, grey horses were 'born' with their underlying colour and a little grey around the muzzle. Each 'year' they became more and more grey, sometimes with dapples etc as one would see in real life. When the new (and much more realistic) colour palette was introduced, this gradual greying no longer happened. Ever since the new work on the gray gene was announced I have been hoping that it would be more like the old images, and it looks as though it is! Thank you Ammit for all the hard work you put into this game. :)

@CLynnRose see the posts higher up. Buckskins/Single cream horses seem to need some more work.

  • All gray horses in the game age 7 and younger have been tossed in the image generation queue to update to the new gray generation. (See the forum for more info). Horses 8 and over must be manually rerolled.

The estimated time to generate all images is 9 and a half hours.

  • Thank you so much everyone for your extensive feedback. It was incredibly helpful.

We have pushed out updates to gray, single cream and P+. To see updates to everything except gray you can use the new Regenerate image button on your horses' control panel. There is no charge for this and markings will not change.

The gray aging rate has been cut in half. This can be seen with just a refresh of the image.

I would have sworn it was a silver buckskin or silver black chinchilla with toner. Gorgeous, the dapples remind me of the first sooty+ buckskin I fell in love with years ago in the game.
  • @ClynnRose I do believe that it is the homozygous sooty+ that is helping with it. I'll have to see if I can find a silver buckskin or a silver black chinchilla in my heard now. :))
