Here's a color guessing contest to test your luck and genetic knowledge.

1. Pick 5 crosses you want to do with your own stallions and mares. The only restriction is that they may not have identical gene tests. This is because I will only give credit for correct guesses where there is a possibility of more than one result.
a. If stallion and mare have the same gene set--EE, dd, etc.--there is no question of what that horse will pass on to its foal.
b. If both are Ee or dD, there are a number of possible results, so this would count as a guess.
c. If one parent is EE and the other ee, once again you should know for sure what the foal will be, and it's not a guess.
d. At least one parent should be heterozygous for the gene in question. It's okay if the other parent is homozygous.

e. In short, the more different allele sets the two parents have, the more points you have a choice of gaining, IF your guess is correct. However, it's okay if some genes have a definite outcome. It's just won't do you much good if most of them don't have at least two possible results.

2. Guess what the color name and gene test for their foal might be.

3. Post your 5 entries, giving a link to both horses, their color names, a copy of their genetic test results, and your guess of what the foal will be in this thread, including both color name and the gene test.

4. The deadlines for posting will be the end of July 1, game time, for players with an upgrade and the end of July 2 for players with free accounts.

5. Post your results after you have bred your pairs. The format will be to copy your entry post and then insert a link to the foal listing its color name and the actual gene test result.

6. The deadline for posting your results will be July 16, in case some pairs are being pasture bred.

I will award 1 point for each correct guess and an additional point for any allele that is attributed to the correct parent. For example, if both stallion and mare are heterozygous for Champagne, You will get 1 point if you guessed the the foal would be heterozygous for Champagne and another point if you guessed correctly that it would get the dominant Champagne allele from the sire or from the dam. (This is really a free point, since if both parents are heterozygous, either one could have given the foal the dominant allele. :D)

Important note: When listing the alleles for a gene, the first allele comes from the sire and the second allele comes from the dam. For example--Kitto KitSb1--the foal got tobiano from his sire and Sabino 1 from his dam.
