What gene do I edit?
-
-
Removing the appaloosa LP will show less white on his body. Removing one copy should reduce the blanket by roughly half; removing both copies will take all the white off the body. You might also want to reduce the white factor.
-
Removing his PATN1 will get rid of the blanket altogether (though there might still be a tiny patch on his rump, at which point rerolling might get rid of it). Leaving the PATN1 and removing one LP will put spots on his blanket. It's the hom LP that's making the blanket area completely white rather than with appy spots. White factor has no effect on appaloosa markings, but may reduce those socks some. Removing one or both of the W20s could also reduce the socks.
Edit: You could also just get rid of both LPs so he's not appy anymore, which you might prefer because appy white will always mask over phantom markings. Phantom only shows through and brings color back in areas of white coming from Kit and Splash alleles.Post edited by Cavalynn at 2022-05-18 00:05:36 -
What gene do I use to reduce the white factor? That's the deadly one, isn't it?
Basically, I want his Hrt to show more.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2022-05-18 00:01:32 -
White factor is not deadly. It just makes crosses of potentially lethal genes more risky. For example, white 1 and tobiano is a low risk cross, but combined with a high white factor, it could still be deadly. White factor just tells Kit and Splash alleles how much white to express, how loud the markings should be, in other words. And the more white a potentially lethal cross expresses, the more likely it could be a lethal load of white.
But that has nothing to do with his phantom hearts not showing. If you want his hearts to show more, turn both LPs into - so he's not appy anymore. Appy blanket will always cover over phantom markings. The phantom markings can only show through Kit and Splash alleles. -
Removing the appaloosa LP will show less white on his body. Removing one copy should reduce the blanket by roughly half; removing both copies will take all the white off the body. You might also want to reduce the white factor.
This is not correct. Follow CLynnRose's advice above. :)

Thank you. I really appreciate you explaining. I am trying to figure out on my own, but I struggle with the help book, for some reasons I can't click on some of the links.

I took out the two LP's and changed the white factor to none. I love the new look. Is there anything else I should consider? Did I choose the best white factor?

I think he turned out nice. I like his simple hearts.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Thank you. Yes, I tried putting b/b on him but it didn't come out anywhere looking nice. He looked like he was wearing baggy blue pj bottoms, so I took it back off. Expensive mistake. Somewhere I have a white horse with black hearts. Hoping for something nice there if I can ever find it again.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2022-05-20 20:14:44

Breed him to mares with Tobiano, you should get some babies with more hearts.
He is homozygous for W20 so if the mare gives her tobiano to the foal, the foals white markings will be big and bold. It will be more likely to show hearts.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
