Licensed Genes
-
Can someone explain how ownership of licensed genes works? I have been comparing the number of gene license genes I hold in particular categories against the horses that carry those genes. I assumed that the license only applied to stallions/mares that had the genes put on by me, or given to me during Gift Exchange. However, it doesn't seem to work like that and I would really like to understand this before Gift Exchange so that I don't make a mistake in gifting.
Thanks in advance for any clarification.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
Licenses are not linked to any horse. You either own the right to breed that gene or not. You can own multiple copies of a license and can gift a copy in the exchange.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-19 09:22:26Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

If our last horse with a certain licensed gene ages out of the game, do we lose that license? Do we have to purchase the gene a second time in that case?Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2022-05-19 19:31:43Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

how do you get a license? once you put a licensed gene on a horse, do you own the license? or does it go when you sell the horse?Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Once you have a license, you don't need the horses that have the gene in order to keep the license. I know because when I bought my first licenses, right after that I didn't have time to play for a while and when I came back my original foundies with the genes had died without any offspring. But I still had the licenses and was able to buy stock with those genes again. You can also sell all the horses with that gene if you want and you'll still keep the license (unless you're transferring through the gift exchange, in that case the license goes with them so players without the license can be gifted it.) It's like this: the only way to get a license is to buy it through the RGS (or have it bought for you by another player) or GMT lab (for certain licensed genes that are available there). You get a copy of the license every time you purchase the gene onto a foundation (through RGS or GMT lab) and the only way you can lose a license is by gifting it to another player through the exchange. They never expire or go away with the horse when it dies or you sell it (except, like I said, through the gift exchange.)

Thanks everyone. It all makes sense now. :)

The license is not linked to a horse in any way. You can not put it on a horse and it does not mater if a horse ages out because it is not connected to any horses
CLynn gave a great rundown as always!

So to elaborate on this question, I've read previous GE discussions and I'm still a little confused about gifting licenses since some of the comments seemed contradictory.
Let's say I have some 2g horses with a licensed gene my giftee doesn't have, and I have multiple copies of that license. If I gift them one of the 2g horses am I also gifting them a copy of the license? Or is it foundation horses only?Post edited by Starstruck2 at 2022-05-20 08:19:49Starstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest

You can not gift a 2nd gen horse to someone if they do not have the license. Foundations only.Need to contact me? Read this first.

If you have more than one horse with the attributes, and gift one, do you lose all your licenses for that gene? Or does that only apply if you gift the last one?

You only lose one license per foundation gifted, not all of them in one go.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Thank you.
Is there a list somewhere for horses that have licenses that you don't need to buy the license, it comes with the horse?Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2022-05-20 20:22:58 -
The horses themselves don't have the licenses. You get the licenses for having purchased the gene. The horse it goes onto doesn't matter in the long run. You can see all the gene licenses you own and how many copies of each on your home page under the licenses section.

Thank you.

So I do have to keep one horse with the gene on it then? What if I un-alter him? Will that let me buy a horse with bats? (not a foundation)
edit...
Well, there's no horses for sale that have bats, so I guess the question is moot.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2022-06-13 20:34:52
