I can't figure what I'm doing wrong.

Liver isn't a gene, it's a combination of genes. The simplest way to search for livers would be to put "Liver" in the color name box on the first search tab.

To add to what Mack said (since it took me a while to figure this out too), to be labeled liver, horses must have:
ee (to be chestnut)
+ 3 darkening modifiers - two Sty and 1 DP, or 1 Sty and 2 DP (typically less common). So you can get really specific in the search if you're looking for a certain version.

If you add cream to that, you get chocolate palomino.

You can have liver red roan, liver red dun, and probably some others I'm forgetting.

You can also search by using the "must not have" option. I mark "must not have" for "E" and "Must Not Have" for the -- in Sooty. And then mark "Must Have" in DP. It will show me livers and choc palominos.

Humboldt that won't get all livers as they can be Sty/- Dp/Dp as well

You could also put the word "liver" in the color name box. That will get all the horses that have liver in their color name. You would miss out on the chocolate palominos though, so I'd prefer doing it the way lecobb8 says with selecting sooty and DP.
