Changes are coming to agouti, here is what you need to know
-
What is happening?
The + and t alleles of agouti are being removed from the game.
When?
Probably around September but I am not positive on the exact date.
Why is this happening?
When HAJ was first created we did not have agouti variants. Then it became the internet consenses that + and t were real. After several years of this being the dogma, I added them to the game. There now is updated scientific evidence showing that the thinking from that period was incorrect. As far as we know A and a are the only alleles of the extension gene found in horses.
What is going to happen to wild bays?
I am going to create a new gene for the restriction of black points. It will work just like wild bay does now BUT instead of being on the agouti gene directly, it will be inherited separately. You will need to breed for agouti AND agouti promoter to get wild bay horses. Agouti promoter is going to be just as common as + is now and I will be turning horses with + in the game now into these promoter horses. The transition should be seamless for you. Other than having to watch out for both genes when breeding instead of just agouti status breeding wild bays won't be notably different.
The + allele will be removed completely in one swoop but your horses will not appear any different.
What is going to happen to brown?
Brown is more complex and will see more drastic changes. First, the t allele is going away NOT the brown phenotype. Brown will change to work like liver and chocolate palomino does now. A horse will need 4 or mark darkening conditions to have bay become brown in their color name. This is based on current scientific understanding showing that EE horses tend to be darker than Ee horses and that Aa horses tend to be darker than AA horses. (EE Aa horses tend to be brown.) This is combined with other darkening factors (represented as sooty in the game) to create the final shade of the horse's coat. E (extension) and A (agouti) status are not the only factors that decide if a horse is brown but they are contributing factors.
What is a darkening condition?
With our liver horses each copy of sooty and each copy of DP count as one darkening condition. This will be true with brown horses as well. In addition to sooty and DP being EE or Aa will also count as a darkening condition for brown horses.
EE = +1
Aa = +1
Sty/- = +1
Dp/- = +1
Sty/Sty = +2
Dp/DP =+ 2
Will my brown horses turn bay?
No. While I am totally eliminating all copies of the + allele the brown allele will stay in the game as a ghost allele. I will not be removing t from any horses. I will be making it so all t alleles look like normal A alleles but they will secretly be t. That way if your horse is brown now that won't change. However, they will not be able to pass on this t allele after the changeover. All foals they produce will get the normal A allele instead of t.
Will my brown lines turn bay?
Maybe. Absolutely some genetic combinations currently in the game called brown will be called bay after this change. Since most people who breed for brown also breed for heavy sooty and DP in their brown lines, most lines will be unaffected. This post is your multiple months in advance warning. If you breed for brown without sooty and DP you should start adding those to your line. Sty was already a requirement to get reliable brown horses in the game so this should not be difficult.
Exactly what genetic combos will be bay versus brown?
I have made a spreadsheet
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EHr5iP5D8NNHME1LWc-6tgpwupd_BdZpuMKeqNBnZuI/edit?usp=sharing
Will DP now be required for brown?
No, EE Aa StySty horses will brown even without the DP gene.
How can I guarantee brown foals every time?
EEAAStyStyDpDP is true-breeding and will produce a brown foal every single time if both parents have this genetic combo. Make sure your lines are heavy with Sty and Dp to guarantee brown foals. Keeping your brown line homozygous for black will also help a lot.

Oh yay, I was worried that wild bay phenotypes wouldn’t show anymore and I love those :)I’m autistic and I struggle with any kind of communication, so I apologize in advance if I say anything rude or offensive because there’s a 99% chance that I have no clue I did it. I appreciate your patience with me!

So what happens to our horses with wild bay?Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

this is great! can you put this in the genetics guidelines so we can always find it easily?Post edited by fiddleroo at 2022-05-11 08:01:30

@GildedFire I outlined that in the post above :) " I will be turning horses with + in the game now into these promoter horses." All wild bays now will just be swapped seamlessly to the new version.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-11 08:08:55Need to contact me? Read this first.

This will be exciting! I'm always happy to see change that means more realistic genes. I'll definitely be checking in on my brown horses and making sure they have sooty and DP

I have a question about the "Candy Appleloosa" HH , as most of these are HOM ( at least most of mine are ) t/t; and most of them have at least 1 copy of Sty if not 2 ; how will it affect them currently in game and going forward?Thanked by 1Xzeina

All herd helpers with the + and t alleles will be updated and no longer have + or t. Your question is a bit too broad for me to give you a specific answer though.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-11 11:55:30Need to contact me? Read this first.

I'm really excited to see that homozygous black is going to be darker then het! Will that effect non agouti horses as well?
Also, though, what did you mean by the "question is a bit too proud"? -
How exciting! :D Looking forward to the changes!Player ID #250257, She/Her

I have another question: will brown buckskins still look different from bay buckskin, if the horse has enough darkening genes to be brown?Thanked by 1Xzeina

Broad not proud.
The brown phenotype isn't going anywhere. Nor are brown buckskin.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-11 15:01:55Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thanks for this extended explanation and early warning Ammit! I love my bays and browns so ill have to look to my lines critically.
I have one question already:
Does this mean that all hom sty (het/hom) DP bays turn brown?
So that this color/phenotype is removed from the game? Or will this phenotype still exist but will it just be called brown?

Thank you so much for the very full explanation and length of warning about this new change. Bay is one of my favourite colours and I was already about to start a dedicated bay line of horses so your timing is perfect. :) I will really be thinking about what genes I will want in my bay lines.
-
MS, we are changing what does or does not get called brown. That genotype will gain the brown color name. The spreadsheet I posted will tell you exactly what genotypes will result in what phenotypes.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-05-12 04:00:05Need to contact me? Read this first.

when does the GMT sale start? I see they sell for 10 vouchers each?
-
@fiddleroo, the sale isn't through the voucher system. Go to Upgrades > Buy Upgrades > Game Case & Tokens. The sale is already going.

ok, I am looking at the spread sheet you created ( thank you btw ) and have a more focused questions now ; on most of my CandyAppleloosa's their genotype is EE tt Sty , the question is are the t/t genes being replaced with A/A making them bays instead of browns? Is the current genotype going to be randomly re generated? I dont breed for bays at all but I do like the occasional brown in my livec line so this is pretty important to me :) Thank you for taking the time to answer

Are you asking about horses in the game already or future creates from this hh?Need to contact me? Read this first.

I understand the horses in game will stay the way they are, unless I misread that? My question is regarding future CandyAppleloosa's genotype's
-
I will probably make it AA but I am honestly not sure yet. I will need to get the new system in and see what looks closest.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Ammit thank you for explaining to me! I was hoping the phenotype dark DP bay (which will be called brown from September) would not dissappear as I really like that color. So im very glad it will stay in the game just with a different name. I was assuming that everything that would be called brown would also get a new color/phenotype. Thank you for providing this clarification :)HJ1 160524

Ammit looking at the spread sheet I guess I have some confusion on what will make a bay or brown. I see on line 9 that the horse has 3 darkening agents, but is hom AA and het E. I see that most of the brown types can be hom AA but would it require another darkening agent and the horse to be hom EE? As I see the bay trend being het E with hom AA? I guess I have to take a better look at the spread sheet when I'm done work.
Nvm I see that in order to have brown they need to have 4 or more darkening agents and E counts as one so as long as I have 4 and at least one A and one E I will have brown.Post edited by Brandybrookes at 2022-05-14 03:37:31 -
and the horse to be hom EE?
Hom. EE is not required for brown.Need to contact me? Read this first.

How will S+ factor in?Who honors those we love for the very life we live? Who sends monsters to kill us and at the same time sings that we will never die? Who teaches us what's real and how to laugh at lies? Who decides why we live and what we'll die to defend? Who chains us and who holds the key that can set us free? It's You! You have all the weapons you need, now fight!

I asked the same question on Mesa because most of my bay lines have some S+ mixed in! S+ will work like sooty for bay vs brown.Thanked by 1Feather Farms

After trying to explain this to someone else, I came up with a couple of questions:
1) How does Sty+ actually work in the game? Does it apply more darkening, or does it redistribute what darkening is there to make the alternative dapples? And of course, as already asked how will it interact on your Brown Chart?
2) How does DP work in Bays? Since in Chestnuts it serves to Darken them, but in Bays, without Sooty, it brightens them (Cherry Drop). I understand that we will need Sty for brown, but this question is just for my own curiosity as to why it preforms differently in Red vs Agouti.
3) With Agouti Promoter moving to it's own Loci, how is this going to work in relation to brown? I don't know how you'll work the Agouti Promoter, but I imagine it will be something like "-" being normal expression of Agouti and "+" being restricted expression of Agouti, or switched. -
The Sty+ question has already been answered above. It works exactly the same as liver and just counts as a normal Sty. It redistributes darkening.
DP increases the density of red pigment. It does the same exact same thing on chestnuts and bays. It does not brighten bays
That's two different questions. It will interact with brown the same as it does now. I don't know what notation I will settle on.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Sorry I did not see Sooty + addressed above, maybe that was a different server? A quick key word search doesn't show anything until my post.
"DP increases the density of red pigment. It does the same exact same thing on chestnuts and bays."
I'm not sure we are seeing the same thing, so I'll link some examples to guide my question.
Normal Bay and Normal Chestnut with no Sooty or DP genes
Bay and Chestnut with no Sooty genes and homozygous for DP.
I can see what you mean when you say it increases density of red pigment. But for me, it appears to "brighten" bays, making the color more vibrant. When it darkens the red in Chestnut. Maybe "brighten" isn't the right word choice.
Looking at them side by side, I guess it's just a shade thing. Chestnuts appear cooler in tone than Bays in the game, so it was throwing off how I thought DP would have worked. -
@CheshireFarms the post immediately above yours. "S+ will work like sooty for bay vs brown." :DPost edited by Ammit at 2022-06-03 22:53:08Need to contact me? Read this first.
