White Spotted
  • What gene causes this? Is it W20?
I wanna focus my breeding program on white spotted appaloosas but can’t figure out what gene what spotted is..
    Thank you!
  • Any horse with a white spotting or dominant white gene (KIT W) other than w20 (which is very minor and only a booster) will get the word white spotted.
Need to contact me? Read this first.

I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

  • Kit M, W1, w2, w3, w5, w8, w10 all cause the word 'white spotted' in the color name.
Other KIT genes such as Tobiano, Roan or Sabino will cause white markings but will show up as their respective gene in the color name (i.e a horse with KIT Tobiano will be called a Tobiano, not white spotted)

Appaloosa is a different gene to white spotted. LP causes appaloosa spots but is not considered 'white spotted'.

So to get a 'White spotted Appaloosa' colored horse you'd have to have a horse with at least one 'white spotted' gene (listed above) and at least one copy of LP (appaloosa)

w20 is a white booster, w20 will (normally) cause larger/more white markings when combined with any KIT gene (this includes white spotted, tobiano, sabino, etc.)

I hope I was able to help! If you'd like more info I can try to offer some help by finding examples :)

Wait is that a typo or is w5 a hidden gene, I know there are a few RL white genes that aren't in the game (I assume do to either not being confirmed yet or because they'd be similar to bother differentiating) but I was just curious if I'm missing something.

  • I was wondering about that too. I checked the horse search, and there's no W5 in the drop down list of KIT genes.
