Needs some name help for new puppy
-
The time has come and a new puppy is arriving home at the end of the month.
He is a Wirehaired Vizsla, will be a show and hunting dog. This is the first time I get to name my own dog and I am a bit stuck.
The theme of the litter is Rivers, and his registered name must contain the name of a river, like The Nile, Thames, Colorado etc.
Some I came up with but just not sure. Thought I would ask the horse naming gurus here for some help.
Death on the Nile (call name Simon)
Along the River Fowey (call name Tristan)
Adventures on the Androscoggin (call name Andy)
Cannot be more than 42 characters as I have to include his breeders Kennel name. -
Maybe look up some rivers local to you
A river local to me is the Cimmaron and I personally think “canine of the Cimmaron” would be quite comical, you could even use Simon as a call name. You could do “Simon on the Cimmaron”
Not quite a river but a big creek that runs behind my house is the Lyon. “Strength of the Lyon”. Definitely see what’s local to you and go from there!

I live in Coloardo near the Cache la Poudre river... the history is really interesting, it's named for a cache of hidden gunpowder buried by trappers that were stuck in a snowstorm. Something like "Sparking the Cache La Poudre" or "Secret of Cache La Poudre" (call name Cash) would be cool.
Or part of the Oregon Trail went through Wyoming near Independence Rock. The Sweetwater river crossing was part of the trail... you could do "Independence on the Sweetwater River" (Call name Indy)
I don't know a ton about dog showing or naming so I'm not sure if those are too much of a mouthful, lol. My dogs are Buddy and Maverick. Nothing fancy. But I don't show them and they're both rescue mutts so I've not had to worry about that either.
Can the registered names from his parents provide you with any inspiration at all? -
How about Clyde? It's a river in Scotland and also a boy's name. :) Maybe it's not fancy enough though.
-
Androscoggin is a local one for me, but a lot of them are kind of boring for me because they are everyday names in my life. Merrimack, Nashua, Ellis, Dead, Saco. Local was what I went to first for some names but not much stood out for me.
@Ktarpey those are some neat ideas. It seems long names are ok for registered names and then a nice short call name.
Clyde would be a great call name. -
If you're liking Clyde as a call name, it also has some really interesting history. You could go back through and find something that sparks your interest and come up with a registration name from there since you know you like the call name. There's also a Clyde river in Northern Canada so if you want to roll with that name but the Scottish Clyde isn't giving you any inspiration, you may be able to take inspiration from the Canadian one.
I also looked into Vislas a little bit the other day... you may be able to choose a river that's significant to the breeds origin to incorporate. I think the Danube was coming up as one, Dan or Danny is a nice derivative to use as a call name from Danube. :) -
A river name for me would be Rise of the Platte (Platte River near where I grew up in Nebraska)
Running Nashua Rapids - I like Nashua because Nashua was a famous Thoroughbred racehorse that was a really good stallion.
-
I was trying to think of names of like that, unfortunately the Nashua river is mostly polluted from the old mills and city runoff now.
If it helps any, Mom is Ester-Hazi Lava, and dad is Compass' Cedrus Atlantica (from her tree themed litter).
-
I've been doing a little thinking and thought about tying in my time spent in Northern California - where my game name comes from.
Sunset at the Klamath River
Adevntures on the Klamath
Rocky Shores of the Klamath
Gold Panning on Trinity River
Lost Along Mad River
-
National Geographis alled the Klamath "a river upside down" because of how unusual its geography is, that's a interesting fact that could shape a name! Something like "Klamath Upside Down" would be fun.
Or if you did "Lava Beds by the Klamath" it would be a nod to Lava Beds National Monument as well as incorporating his lineage a bit :)
I also have "Finding Fortune on Trinity's Banks" and "Staking a Claim for Trinity Gold" -
Great ideas! I have so much thinking to do!
-
I've had fun researching rivers! Total nerd over here. I hope you find something that you love. I'd love to see a pic at some point when you get him!
-
Just wanted to say how envious I am. I have fallen in love with the wire-haired Vizsla. I hope you will post pics.
Out here in Arizona one of our main rivers is called the Salt River. Desert Salt? Tubing Down the Salt? Or we have Tres Rios were three rivers combine, given the reddish coat of the Vizsla, Sunset at Tres Rios, or Sunset on the Gila. ☺️
Good luck and enjoy your new pup.
