Ranks are simply about how often the different herd helpers provide different genes. Something like basic black or red (chestnut) will be Rank 1, will show up fairly often, and give you lots of creates plus numbers of people you can share with and how many extra creates you can make. As you go up the rankings the genes on offer become more 'special' and the number of creates and shares gets smaller. For example, I currently have a Rank 2 herd helper. This particular one is for Bay Appaloosa. I can create 20 if I wish and 9 people can share it giving me 4 extra creates for each person. Today's offer from Ammit is Rank 4, Splash Appaloosa - but as it is from Ammit there are no shares. I also picked up a Rank 5 from the herd helpers, this is Exceptional Producing Rabicano. All Exceptional Producers with specific colours will be Rank 5, those without specific colours will be Rank 4. Occasionally we get Rank Specials from Ammit, these are Rank 6, one create only and cannot be shared.

I hope I haven't confused you too much. Basically, if you like the colour, go for it and create a horse/horses from it. It is always a good idea to share your daily herd helper because other people might like it even if you don't want it for yourself.
