A Classic Dilemma (Line Progression)
-
The time I never thought would come has arrived. My favourite line, my fantasy extravaganza line that bluchystals so kindly and generously helped me start, has reached a point where I don't know how to proceed.
This link will kind of highlight my problem. My fifth gen crop of foals has produced a few stars/golds. I haven't yet comparison tested the A/Blues but I'm sure most will be superior. This is a line that started from C/Yellow so I'm pretty excited to have 5th gen stars/golds. I aggressively geld/spay anything that doesn't meet my standards.
My priority list for this line is quality first and foremost. With the advent of being able to GMT any gene from the parents I no longer have to sacrifice color for quality which is amazing for me. So quality to me means:
-Higher paper grade than sire/dam
-Tests superior
-Highest possible PT score
I also want enough to fill a 30 slot pasture, which only further complicates things. :P
Options:
1. I keep only the stars/golds intact and hope I get more out of the next few crop of foals.
2. I keep all superior stock intact, throw the blue mares in with the star stud I settle on, and try to suppress the internal wince when I see the blue/star combo in the lineage.
3. GMT/boost the A/Blue foals until I have enough to fill the pasture. Costly sure, but my daily bonus is over 400k so not really too painful for the wallet. Then again, this would cut into GMTing for the specific gene combos I am after so..
So with all of that in mind, what should I do? Maybe you have an option I haven't considered or you've encountered this issue yourself and know the magic fix? :xI breed Drafts and star horses :D

Personally I would go with option 2 combined with option 1. Your quality is still objectively increasing, since you made sure to only keep superior foals, but you aren't wasting breeding seasons trying to get your pasture filled with all golds on the first round.
And then as you get gold g5 foals from the next season or two, you can swap out the blue mares for golds until you have a pasture full of golds in three months. ;;)Thanked by 1Alianne -
I don't really have too much of an opinion on this but I did want to congratulate you on the progression of your line! To be getting any Star/Golds by 5th gen when starting with C/Yellow's is really cool to see.
I would also go with a mix of option 1 & 2. If you have a hard rule that horses must be Star/Gold by 6th gen then I can't see why a few Sup A/Blue 5th gens wouldn't still be helpful in progressing your lines.
But in the end it comes down to what you want to see in your line too. There is no right or wrong, it's just what you prefer.
My line starts with A/Red foundations, I only keep sup horses and expect Star/Gold by 4th gen. I do get a few Star/Gold 3rd gens but they are nice surprises not an expectation. This horse is a good example of the progression of sup horses. https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=14105620
Do you have a benchmark horse you test them all to for each generation?Post edited by GoldenSpur at 2022-07-29 21:50:32Thanked by 1Alianne -
@goldenspur, on that pedigree I saw Blue+, A+ what's the plus?Thanked by 1Alianne

@Fiddler - the ancestor page of a horse can only show three generations back, the + just means that there are further generations to be seen if you click the 'Show horse's pedigree' button.

@doragon That is a good point about missing out on breeding seasons. I tend not to get too worried about it because my life is hectic but it’s definitely a helpful point. And swapping the blues out for golds is something I hadn’t considered lol. Thank you! :x
@Golden Spur Aw thank you so much, that means a lot from you! Line progression has always been my biggest hurdle as I’ve been playing sporadically since 2015. I do not currently have a benchmark for any of my lines/generations. I used to back when I first started but I would always get overwhelmed by the amount of superior colts I got each season from all the different lines I had going lol. I do like the perspective of treating the 5th gen stars/golds as surprises and not expectations. The horse you linked illustrates what I'm going for.I breed Drafts and star horses :D

You've done well to get then to where they are for sure.
I was struggling for time over the last, well year I suppose and stopped comparing my 3rd gen and up mares. I just completed testing all the 3rd gens to a benchmark mare and went from 800 mares down to 300. I may have a hording problem, but that is total numbers including all 3 of my lines. Now I have a more manageable number of mares and I know I have only kept the best. Hopefully that will help pick up the rest of the generations quality. You really get to see the difference in quality within a paper level when you have a benchmark. As for Sup colts, I only keep 2 or 3 I want to breed from and keep the others to hopefully GMT to mares before they are 4yo otherwise they get gelded. Can't have too many show horses ;)Thanked by 1Alianne -
@goldenspur if you only keep 2 or 3 studs how do you breed all the mares?

I cap my mares at 100 per generation in the pasture, and I keep a max of 9 boys for each generation.Thanked by 1Fiddler
