Flying by the seat of my pants right now
  • There's some chaotic energy in the air rn and it is NOT OK but also A LITTLE OK.

So last week my lawn mower got back from the shop after being dead, yay. Then I find my fridge has died, not yay. Bought a new one because the old one was old and not worth the cost of fixing by my own diagnosis. So that's a nice big bill. I'm also trying to get parts to build a computer so I'm already short on cash, thankfully my husband footed a lot of the cash (separate finances because I guess that's a millennial thing?) ANYWAY it's been a weird few weeks.

On the work side of things I've been pretty unhappy with a lot for a while, I've worked at this company for 8 years and have moved up the chain a bit but I still only make $20 an hour for a highish stress, psuedo-leadership position (I'm an auditor/subject matter expert). I do a lot, I work hard, and my department does a lot for health insurance claim compliance, we've been credited with "millions in savings" and yet the corporate gods will not raise the budget to pay us more than the 2-3% annual bump for the past oh... 4 years. The beginning of this year they announced our raises were going to be in effect 4 months later than usual to save money, the same week they announced 3 new board members. Real scummy for an "employee culture" company. So this past week the president, vice president, and my manager's direct report announced they were retiring/moving on to another opportunity. If you don't know corporate, that's the reddest of flags you can get, the canary in the coal mine is dead, the rats are fleeing to higher ground.... get out. Now I've been through some of these restructures with this company before, I mean I've been in health insurance for 8 years through the ACA and everything, stuff has happened and I've ridden through it without much issue. But with feeling so stagnant, and being almost guilted into staying rather than moving to a different dept for vertical movement because we're so short staffed, I'm just done with the place.

Last week, during one of the "restructure update meetings" I was surfing jobs around here for the field I'm in, and wouldn't you know it my doctor's network group is hiring for something I literally do now. So this weekend I zipzap slap on a coat of paint to my resume and send it out - and not 24 hours later I get an email for a phone interview. To say that happened too fast is an understatement, I am feeling many emotions but mostly confusion. I haven't interviewed at a company outside of mine for.... 8 years! What do I do?! Will I like it? How do I negotiate salary and benefits and can I still work at home? Will I go crazy driving to work every day if not?

Also, did I mention, I'm back in college right now getting an HIMT degree (health information management) and as of right now I'm 30 credits from completion, so about 1 year of full time work/1.5 for me probably from graduation. So I'm doing school work part time, full time work, building a PC, looking for a job, and a lot of this just happened in the past couple weeks. I'm a person that likes to move and do stuff and not stand still but holy crap this is a lot.

Oh and my husband got diagnosed with celiac, he was just "gluten allergy" for a long time but got retested last week after a few months of being back on the gluten, so YAY new diet, new meal planning, etc. At least we should be getting healthy doing this but YIKES.
  • WoW! I d be over my head just a bit with everything thats going on in your life. As for the interview ; be yourself, be honest, tell them what your salary goals are ( where you want to be in a year or so ) and the benfits you currently have; ask them what they think they want to pay and add at least 10% to it to give yourself some negoitating room. Good Luck ! My hubby builds / fixes computers as a side hustle ; he suggests waiting til closer to christmas to get the best deals since Invidia dna Asis will be out with new stuff around then ; you can scoop up "last years " models cheaper

  • I got most of the parts already, I saw that GPU/CPU went down a bit last month and nabbed so lower-mid level pieces. I'm not too crazy, I just play Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, and Rival Stars (might get RDR2 if it goes on sale...) so I don't need the latest n greatest. I'm pretty much just looking for storage (1-2TB SSD probably) and RAM (2x8 will be fine). I got a pretty case on sale, Asus B550 mobo, MSI 1050TI GPU, AMD 3600 CPU and my friend gave me an extra power supply he had laying around. The parts I have will do what I want and I can upgrade the GPU down the line if I want to. I got each piece for $100-150 so I think I did pretty well!

Thanks for the interview info, I've been conditioned to be humble about money but I know that I should stand my ground on these things, especially if I want to get a pony before I'm 35. Stupid expensive hobbies....
  • good luck to you. your company's behavior reminds me of Boeing, where I worked most my life. good luck on your interview!

  • Make sure you mention that you are studying when you have your interview. Employers are very impressed by 'mature' students who study while working as it shows good organisation and dedication. Good luck with the interview. :)

  • Interview went really well! It was the prelim phone interview and the interviewer seemed to like me, which is good. I reviewed their benefits though and their tuition reimbursement plan isn't as good as my current employer, so that's a negotiation tactic to get MORE MONEY. If they want to hire me, that is.... I should be hearing back by Friday!

  • Turned down because I asked for too much money lol. I wouldn't go to a different place for less so I'll just take the L and know that my resume is good and I have more interview experience.

  • I am a firm believer that there is a reason you don't get a particular job, and that the right job is just waiting for you. Good luck on the job hunt, and good for you with the positive attitude. Also, keep going with the studies - that is going to be so worth it in the end. :)

  • If you dont value yourself ; you cant expect others to :) Knowingf they "couldn't " afford you means you are better then they hoped to get. Good Luck and another will come along soon enough ; its a job searchers dream right now

  • Updating because I finished my computer on Monday and she runs and she's beautiful :') Starting Final Fantasy 14 and liking it so far, it runs Sea of Thieves on legendary graphics with 0 hiccups and the GPU barely blinks. I LOVE ITTTTTTTTTT

Started my first class of the semester and it's gonna be easy as pie, I could sit an afternoon doing homework and finish the course if I felt like it.

Math starts in October, not gonna hold my breath for that one.

  • It is definitely volatile. I haven't done any contracts, I had a realtor come out and tell me my house is basically up 50k (it's gone up 50% from what I bought it for) from what I paid. The area I am in is absolutely booming, lots of new jobs coming to the area plus a good school district and affordable taxes, the town is a mile off the interstate between 2 large cities (I'm in NE Wisconsin). Right now all the houses being built are 300k+ so my house size and cost is very desirable right now no matter what happens with the market. I did get pre-approvals for mortgages and the local rate is 7.25 which is disgustinggggggggg but I can definitely afford a nice house with a good mortgage payment. I got this house on 4.5% interest 5 years ago.

This was prompted because a house down the road has been for sale for a while, I saw the price dropped again so I inquired about it and we went out to see it and really wanted to try to grab it. Unfortunately someone was literally 1 day faster and they accepted the offer this morning before I got any docs the the mortgage lenders for the approval :') But it got our wheels turning, we have a decent beginner home in a desirable area and we just want an upgrade. There's an area about an hour from here that we love that has a very affordable housing market (and more options for horse activities, where i'm at has minimal options for board) so if I spot something nice we can drop an offer on it with a sale contingent. We're in a position that we do not NEED to move, and we do not need to force anything to happen so we'll find a perfect situation down the road. Hopefully mortgage rates will be better by then lol
