To Pasture or Not To Pasture
-
Is it more beneficial to put all intact females in the pasture?
I am still learning and my intact females are in barns. If it does benefit, how so?
Thank you for any help you can give.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
if you're planning to breed them, by al! means. their foals get a boost.
but of you're just going to show them, leave them in the barn -
Each mare has a certain breeding range, or range of possible breeding and showing abilities they can pass to their foals. The pasture bonus makes them more likely to produce offspring on the higher end of that possible range. What this primarily translates to is that breeding mares with a full 30-day pasture bonus means you have a better chance of getting foals that pass breeding advice and/or are better show horses. If you're breeding for quality, pastures are the best option. They also take less time and effort, so they make larger operations much more feasible.

and pasture breeding costs less per horse!
