Show herd economics
-
I've been playing about a year, and haven't payed a ton of attention to my show herd. I mostly bought affordable high pointed horses in the auction (typically 17 year olds). If I lost some to rollover, well, they were cheap.
I have about 65k a daily show bonus, and felt like it was time to give it some more effort.
I see many people say they keep every foal they breed. However, if you don't have a massive amount of barn space, would it be more economical to auction the non-keeper foals, and use that money to buy horses with a daily show bonus that already gets them something? -
I agree. I have noticed some horses always take last place in shows, and they don't earn much hbs... Why wouldn't you get rid of them?

Before I had a lot of space for show barns, I would only keep high pt foals, usually 10.5 or above for my second gen foals. I didn't have many past 2nd or 3rd gen. That did keep me going for a good while until I started picking up 1k barns on sale. I did use real money for my show barns however. I think if you plan on using in game only money for your show barn purchases (with IVs) this may be a bit harder, so purchasing high pt bootstraps or show ponies should help. I also cull any poorly performing show ponies at age 10, which helps recoup money, since they sell at auction at minimum for their lifetime payment. If I ever need liquid cash, I sell older show ponies.Thanked by 1Fiddler

There are so many different methods you could do for your show string. I like to keep my foals that don't pass sba, typically the second generation foals as they have a higher tendency to land in good spots and bring in alot of points. However I have had some really good third gens. Having a good mix of different pt scores in your show barn will help as the ones with a lower pt will level off earlier and bring in a good pay where the high pt horses take a little bit before they level off.
I also have a rule thumb for my show horses. I look at there lifetime pay out and compare it to there age. If my 5 year old gelding doesn't have a 5k payout or higher then I determine based on where he is to leave him and see how he does next month or auction him. If he was close to that 5k mark I would keep him around , but if he only had a 2k or 3k payout I would auction him .
Keep your older horses! Alot of people will auction off horses when they hit 10 for the payout. I wouldn't do it unless you could really use the cash. Horses over 10 years old will start to give you a much bigger daily bonus and if your still showing them the daily bonus increases.

He is over 30 years old and gives me a 528hb daily pay and still has over 5k life payout. Which I forgot to mention when they hit over 10 the life time payout will slowly decrease but the daily payout will increase.
Save up your income and buy iv's. I would try to buy the 1,000stall barns. Once you fill another show barn and let the horses grow to there potential your daily bonus will increase .
Hope this helps :)Post edited by Brandybrookes at 2022-08-21 15:23:21Thanked by 1Fiddler -
As I look at him I feel he will be at his end pay out at roll over as that would be 5,280hbs . Perhaps I'll get lucky and he will make it another month but by September 1st he won't have the 5k life time anymore.

I try and keep most of my spelds but I have been auctioning my inconsistent foals as I feel like they gain points more slowly and barn space is getting tight lol. I evaluate everyone age 10 and up halfway through the month, if they have leveled off and have less than 20 points earned that month then I auction for lifetime payout. Or if they just have a pretty low payout and aren't gaining rapidly I auction at 10 if leveled off. If they are over age 16 with a high daily pay I hang onto them usually even if the points aren't increasing a lot since the LTP drops a lot after 15 or so (as they get closer to 18). I don't auction any show horses under age 10 unless I find out they have a super low PT and the LTP is low, but I usually avoid that by PT testing everyone before putting them in a barnStarstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest
