more than one stud in a pasture?
  • Does anyone actually let more than one stud into the pasture at the same time?
Does it do anything for the foals? Or is it completely random, which is what I would expect.
So why would someone do that?
    thanks

  • I do one because I was my bigger pastures to all breed at once for the BIP, and two because I have too many studs LOL and if they are equal in papers and genes for the group of mares then it's much easier than deciding one by one who to breed to. I run 3 boys in my 100 mare pasture

  • I do as well, especially since most of my studs end up comparing as good as against my other studs of same paper levels so I'll put 3 in main and 2 in the 60's and go from there.
  • wow, ok!!

  • Also, a stallion can only have 50 live cover foals per season, so if your 100 or 60 pasture is full you need to have more than one stallion in it to ensure all your mares are covered. The stallions are allocated completely at random so in a full 60 pasture, for example, you may get one stallion that covers 37 mares and the other covers 23 mares.

I use the maximum number of stallions because it gives a good variety of genes in the offspring, and also, because I was playing long before pastures became a feature, I am more comfortable with hand breeding to get an even bigger spread of genes.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

  • White Valley, I agree. I actually Hand breed all my stock these days and don’t use the pastures at all. May change eventually but for now I like controlling each pairing… and I have a huge barn lol
