How Do You Plan?
  • In other posts I've heard people talking about a variety of different strategies, both digital and with pen and paper to keep track of their breeding goals and projects here. The past few days I've been updating my nifty spreadsheet a bit and it made me curious to revisit the discussion :)

So please feel free to share how you plan for the game! I'm still trying to figure it out myself, so I'd love to hear how other people are doing things, especially for higher gens!

Here's a fun screenshot of my spreadsheet, I love colour coding the lines :D

  • I absolutely love your spreadsheet work! In answer to your question, I do not have a formula yet. Im interested in what others do too but that spreadsheet is perfection!

  • Oh gosh, I commend you on this work! That seems like way too much work for my brain to handle :)) I could never use spreadsheets etc because my ADD would let me work for 5 minutes before me being absolutely done with it. But I also don't really have need for spreadsheets or anything because my breeding program is so large, keeping track of everything individually would be nearly impossible.... I use pastures for 99% of my breeding too so I don't need to track in hand pairings. My lab breeding I just breed what I know I want paired because I have very specific lines and most of the time its foundation straws/eggs :)

  • @OrionsStables thank you, a lot of time went into it :D I really enjoy making spreadsheets for just about everything in life :)) Plus being able to quickly visualize genes I'm interested in and lines helps me plan crosses.

@HayesStable aw thank you :x for me it's something I tend to just do a little bit here and there when I feel like it because it's fun for me lol, but I can totally understand where you're coming from! That definitely makes sense for a bigger barn such as yours, when you have thousands of horses that's simply too much info to keep track of individually. May I ask why you don't tend to lab breed in later gens?

  • Can you, and would you be willing to, share your spread sheet?

  • That is a really nice spreadsheet!

I separate my horses by barns and put some sort of identifier in their names to keep things straight and decide who to breed together. I don't normally plan specific pairings, just groups of horses that will breed within their group. I keep a simple text file outlining the plan for each barn/group. It includes notes like how many stallions are needed to cover all the mares, rules for which foals to keep, and criteria for culling older horses. Most of my breeding right now is based on grouping by paper level. I also have one project barn which is for breeding Era 13 horses to see how fast I can get them to gold/star. I don't currently have any breeding projects based on specific colors/markings/etc., but some of my breeding groups have rules like "stallions cannot have gray."

  • @SabreBaby Absolutely! It's a google spreadsheet so I can share a link pretty easily. Hopefully this way if anyone wants to play around with it and swap in their own horses they can use the link to make a copy and do so :) [LINK] (edit for disclaimer, it's not fully filled out yet, so not very polished)

@Hrelvesuu Thank you! Using identifiers in their names is a good idea. Very interesting, thank you for sharing your strategy :D keeping track of how many stallions are needed and criteria is something I would like to work on myself!

  • Awesome! Thank you! I'm going to check it out asap.
  • @Heartwood I typically only lab breed very specific, special horses. I mostly do foundations because it gives me more homozygous breeding horses in the 2nd gen which gives me more keepers come 3rd gen. 3rd gen and up I only keep horses that are homozygous for the main gene in a particular line (EX: Mushroom is a main line so by 3rd gen they MUST be homozygous). I'm not great at explaining it lol But it's also a cost thing. There is no point for me to spend the hbs lab breeding later generations unless it's absolutely necessary or if its a "dead" line that I am trying to revive :)
