Some of my 2 year olds have already picked up a point, sometimes half a point, sometimes more. Others make no points at all, sometimes for several years. Is this any indication that they will pay off well as they mature (high dpo) or is this just random chance? Here's an example

It's just random chance when they're foals. They have a 50/50 chance in those shows. When they start training(at age 2) is when they start earning points based on their abilities.

I don't think its random. I've followed foals for " Years " and the ones that made no progress in their first year don't do as well as the others

It's 'random' in the sense that, because foals don't train, their score will stay within the same range until they turn two years old. In each class, there are only two foals, so it depends on which foal they are up against each time. That's where the 'random' bit comes in.
