"Mulato" color?
-
Is there anyone in this amazing community, who speaks or understands Spanish?
A famous Criollo stallion named La Invernada Hornero has his color described as "mulato". What would this color look like in a horse? -
If you google him ; you ll see on his "All Breed Pedigree" he is a gray horse :)

@annismyrph yes, he was a gray horse; I was searching for his color before the greying process start, and found it as a "mulato".

my mother in law is full blood Portuguese who's first language is Portuguese and she says Spanish is very similar (close enough to translate most words), I can ask her in the morning if she knows for sure what it means. Unfortunately I failed Spanish in high school with a 28% so I'm no help :))

It basically means mixed. They might have used it to mean "mottled" or something similar. The term also seems to come from an old term for individuals with mixed African and European ancestry, according to Google. I couldn't find anything relating it to any specific horse color.Post edited by MackZ at 2022-11-19 00:21:50

Just be aware it is occasionally seen as a racist term in English. But as MackZ said it just means mixed. What that means for his color is who knows?Need to contact me? Read this first.

There's also a mulato chili. It's the darker counterpart of the Poblano. In the horses case, I'd say it means a dark brown, almost black, as that is how the pepper dries.

Update
I found in some facebook page one of those horse coat colors tables. It is another name for bay, a dark shade of bay.
"Castaño, mulato o zaino: es el color marrón oscuro, a veces casi negro; las crines y cola suelen ser pardas o negras." --> "it is a dark brown color, sometimes almost black; mane and tail are usually brown or black."
@Ammit yes, thank you for letting me know! By now it is also seen as a racist term in Brazil.
@KhaosAcres thank you! I live in Brazil so I do know what the term means; I just could only imagine its meaning in the Spanish way to name horse colors.
@MackZ yes maybe they were thinking about an intermediate color... methinks?
@bluchrystrals you hit the nail on the head!
