Chinchilla Tips
  • I think I am going to take the plunge and try to start a chinchilla line while it is still available, where to start? I like the ones that look dappled black with white mane and tail (Silver black?) is it best to get 2 foundations mare & stallion and give them both 2 copies? Or a mare and try to obtain some straws? Which colors are the best to start with? Any herd helpers that go really well with chinchilla? Thanks
  • Silver black is great for chinchilla. Seeing that for the first time when chinchilla came out was my "must have!" moment. Chinchilla on silver black is also often paired with chocolate to get some unique looking dark brown dapples, more dynamic than you could with a DP dark bay. Brown with S+ used to be really cool because it created a unique white patch with a dappley edge on the belly where the red was eliminated, though I'm not sure it looks quite the same with the agouti update. But S+ can give you a similar effect. Classic champagne with reverse dapples is also really cool looking. And silver black chinchilla with hom nexus is amazing! That's actually one of my goals with my new lines. Rainbow riot like nacre and toner especially can be really cool on chinchilla, because it's adding color back to an otherwise grayscale horse. Satin can be neat for the same reason. I imagine void can also be really dynamic because it'll add black markings instead of white. Something new that can be done because of void is have a red-based chinchilla line with black markings. I'll link to the example below. My older GMT boy, Puddle Jumper, is a silver black chinchilla with toner and pangare+. The color comes through in the dapples and the pangare+ area. One of my new lines is a nacre silver black chinchilla which I think is incredible. Ice 9 can also look neat if you have a really light colored chinchilla with a lot of red areas turned white. Other tips, you don't need DP in a chinchilla line since it only darkens red pigment which chinchilla eliminates. Also, if you're concerned about getting your horses on the leader boards, you might want to add some other fantasy genes so the horses can enter more breeder's clubs since chinchilla will disqualify them from the era and size and other color clubs.

    Here's some color combo examples:

Silver black chinchilla (even though you've already seen this, it's a great example):

Classic champagne chinchilla with reverse dapples (you might have to reroll to get dapples to show, they won't always):

Void chestnut chinchilla (though there are cheaper ways to make a horse all white for the black markings to show than add chinchilla):

And now some of my all-time favorites...

I've always tried to use Silver Pocket Watch herd helpers in my chinchilla lines, but it's only perfect foundation, not exceptional, if that makes a difference to you. If you want to use outside straws and eggs, you might want to breed exceptional because perfect foundations with paid genes are just a lot harder to find, in my experience.

As for whether to GMT it onto mares or stallions or both, I think it depends on how you usually breed your horses (pasture, by hand, or AI) and whether or not you have a premium upgrade and can pull eggs. And do you have the GMTs to spare to max out horses if you don't use the pasture boost? And do you mind waiting until third generation to see chinchilla showing again, since it's a recessive gene? My preference in the past was always to GMT stallions because they can produce so many more foals in a season. I figured it was the best use of the cash. Then I filled pastures with the best mares I could with the basic coat color I wanted, then cross the babies to get back to hom chinchilla again. This season I started GMTing mares for the first time as well and mass flushing eggs to make AI babies that are homozygous already. It's expensive, so I don't think I'll give up pasture breeding and switch over entirely, but it is gratifying to indulge a little and see homozygous horses in the second generation.

  • I'm familiar with most of these color combos and patterns, but that Silver Black Chinchilla with Nexus and Satin is amazing! I might have to add Chinchilla to my fantasy line!

  • @MackZ, Isn't it, though! I couldn't stop staring the first time I saw that picture. I can't wait until I have it breeding true in my own lines. And I just remembered a couple other variations of it that I forgot to include before. I edited my post to add them. :)
  • Try adding Ice or Diamond Sparkle to the Chin/satin/Nexus mix.
