What are you looking for in a rank special herd helper?
-
June events are coming up. Can you tell me what you love to see in a rank special?
Exceptional producing or not?
What base colors do you like to see?
What genes get you excited?
What current herd helpers are your favorite?
What would the most useful herd helper for your account look like?
What do you not want to see and why?
These are just some suggestions for the kind of info I would love to know.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-04-18 06:15:08Need to contact me? Read this first.

Yes, Please Exceptional Producers. Also, I dont think there are many Roan Tobiano or even Tobiano Rank Specials, so that would be awesome.
-
Can you give me some more info? I would love as big a run down from people of what they are looking for as possible. :DNeed to contact me? Read this first.

Yeah a tobiano exceptionally perfect would be nice. Some horses without any appaloosa genes..
And horses with a rare gene or two, unexpected. I love dp and sooty, finding those genes unexpectedly is always a big deal, as is nd1, belton, pangare
Base colors, i love both black and brown.
The most useful to me would have almost no white or appaloosa genes (except for that tobiano) with a smattering of the others i mentioned above. My favorites are the mars horse and the Nightingale. Perhaps a helper who is that rare super show horse, who passes on that ability to her foalsPost edited by Fiddler at 2023-04-18 04:49:13 -
Interesting, I was under the impression that we had a lot of tobiano exceptional rank specials.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Doing some science out of 113 rank specials 11.5% have tobiano. So I can see how 11 percent can feel like hardly any to some people and a lot to others. :) Only 4 of those are exceptional.
Normal
Color With A Really Long Name
Честита Баба Марта
Hail Science!
Imani
Irish Cream
Shades Of Pale
Stars and Stripes Forever
Tan Lines
Vault of Stars
Exceptional
Dove of Peace
Heart of the Holidays
Shadow of Mars
Spiked Eggnog
Rank 5 exceptionals with Tobiano
Exceptional Producing Roan Tobiano
Exceptional Producing Tobiano
(plus 4 non-exceptional versions)
I feel like less exceptional ones are better though because it kind of makes it so the era breeders are totally sorry out of luck. You can always use a higher-era horse but never a lower one if you are breeding for the eras.

You're clearly right about the tobiano horses, but when i was looking for mares to breed my mars horse to, i had trouble finding nice mares that matched him

What were you looking for to define a "nice mare" Info like that is super helpful to me. :)Need to contact me? Read this first.

I wanted. Red and 10.4 pt to match the Mars horse. Specifically.
-
I used to only breed exceptionals, but recently got into era breeding, so I'm only breeding exceptionals with "for funsies" colors now.
Unlike the previous posters, I really like the app genes, but I'm actively trying to avoid breeding in varnish promoter. So a normal "evergreen" horse would be cool to me. I really like the hom snow horses, though I'm still not sure how fast they will varnish without the varnish promoter gene.
I'm also trying to breed lined chimeras, so I like to use chimera foundations.
I really enjoy when the "extra special" genes come to the herd helpers like satin, sooty plus, nexus, belton, etc. I certainly understand from a financial standpoint not giving away the top tier genes, but as someone on a tight budget, who allows herself a premium membership (but nothing else), it's a nice bonus to get some of those I can't afford to buy in the gene sales.
The only W# gene I prefer is W8, maaayyyybe W3.
I appreciate all you do to keep this game fresh and interesting! -
I breed for performance only, so I use only exceptionals. I don't know if there is a way to please both types of breeding programs; could it be a possibility to allow people to choose if they want to create an exceptional or a perfect Rank Special? Like the way we can choose body type etc when we create? Could it be a feature for Rank Specials only?
My favorite horses are dark buckskin, dark brown (ideal is DpDp StySty but I love every variation). Black horses, or very light horses, like Chocolate Palomino Pearl or Silver (dark)Buckskin Pearl. I love both solids and with some white markings, especially kit-mutations.
I am a huge fan of ND1, and dun is also growing on me. Brindle = Instant favourite
I love the ones that have genes that are hard to create, like Dp, Belton spotting (is it createable?) no varnish appaloosas, halo, snowflakes, Nd1 etc.
I also like playful horses with "secret/hidden" genetics that may only express itself in later generations, unless you want to GMT it, f.ex a non-appaloosa with snowflake, or the horses with GP, KP, S+, P+ etc. I have read that we even have one with satin now?
I am not too fond of unrealistic fantasy genes (I have a few that I really love for fun, but I will never become a fantasy breeder), but Chocolate is super fun!
I am not up to date with all the new HH from the last 2 years, so I will just write what I love:
- My favourite HH are everything exceptional dark brown/buckskin/black. I don't think we have a dark brown/buckskin with silver yet?
- Brindles
- Rare genes (not necessarily premium genes, although I love them when I get them of course)
My favourite ones from the old days are:
A Rhythm of Four
King's Ransom (I just wish it was exceptional)
Pretzel Twist
New Coke
Liberation Actualization
Hidden Gates
The Bronze Age
Songs of Old
Bring Back the Sun (It was a great base for my old foundation line, as brindles is my favorite)
I am sure there are plenty of new RS that I would love too.
My favourites from this Christmas/spring was
Harps of gold
Olive branch
Shadow of Mars
Dove of Peace
Nightingale Songs
Light in the Dark
Baba Marta
Solemn And Still
The Hope Of Dawn
Edit; for the summer, maybe we could get one with the Sunshine variation of the Pearl gene?Post edited by Herzeloyde at 2023-04-18 08:35:36 -
Exceptional Rank Specials, Chimera, and the ones with surprise genes are my favourite. I personally really like the ones where I don't have to GMT the Lp off if they have kit genes, or GTM off the KiT genes if I get lucky with a Lp/snow/halo. I know I'm probably the only one that doesn't like to mix the Lp/snow/halo with the KiT genes.
Of course I am a huge fan of Bring Back the Sun, but that is more for personal reasons. Chimeras all the way :)
Shadow of Mars
Solemn and Still
Hope of DawnThanked by 1clarebear -
I echo the sentiment about exceptional tobiano rank specials, as that is my favorite white gene. I like black, bay (but not wild bay), and brown horses with sooty and DP, but a lot of the herd helpers have lightening genes, like dun, nd1, champagne, cream, and pearl. I am not a huge fan of chestnuts, and it seems many herd helpers are those.
In terms of white, I like the whole kit locus, especially tobiano, Kit M, and sabino. It would be neat to have more W3 and Kit M rank specials. I would like fewer rank specials with frame, appaloosa, rabicano, and splash, as I don't breed for any of those genes.
My favorite RS is Autumn's Arrival. Midnight Clear is a close second. Others I like are
Blackest Night
Bring Back the Sun
Mysterious Sigil
Bring Back the Sun
Eye of the Tiger
Lapis Lazuli
New Coke
Paradise Play
Pomegranate
Shadow of Mars
Sugar Plum Fairy
Hope of Dawn

I’d be ecstatic with a dark buckskin with Belton, exceptional producing. Dream come true lol!
-
I would love another ex perf with S+. I think there’s only 2? Nightingale Songs and Olive Branch?
P+ would also be great - it’s kinda in the same situation as S+ (I just like all the pluses lol)
Also, I second @Treble on the kit M and I love @Herzeloyde’s idea about the Sun gene -
I like expros, I only really exclude champagne from my lines so no champagne. Everything else is gravy lol. I do prefer homozygous sooty and do not allow for W20.

It may not be practical from a programing aspect, but I LOVE the idea Herzeloyde had about letting the player choose if they want to make it an exceptional horse or not.
-
lecobb8 It's very much not a practical option sadly.

Also, you guys sometimes have a very warped idea about how many fancy genetic freebies are reasonable. :PPost edited by Ammit at 2023-04-18 10:44:06Need to contact me? Read this first.

You miss every shot you don't take :P
If you take the GP and KP off of Everything Bagel and add the BI as bluchrystals suggested, I would accept it lol
-
Can you tell me what you love to see in a rank special?
I'd like more "true breeding" herd helpers that are homozygous for one or two fancy genes rather than het for lots of stuff. I sort of like the idea of "hidden genes" like has been mentioned but mostly I'd rather they were hidden because the gene only shows on red or black based so will come out when you include lots of base coats in the particular line. Like a herd helper that's hom flaxen and hom silver, so the mane and tail is light colored whether it's on red or black based. Or hom DP on a black horse even though it won't show without other genes.
I love all the champagne rank specials when I happen to be able to create them during Witching Hour. I have a few Hail Science! and Champagne Fizzies I was able to make classic champagnes that way. I love them! Apart from actual herd helpers, I'd love to see more create events to allow us to essentially "stack" herd helpers.
New fancy genes not currently on a herd helper (I don't think) but would love to see are gray reduction and splash M. Though, splash M could be a problem because it would have to create a license along with the horse, so... probably that's not going to happen. But I'd love more gray/champagne combos, especially if gray reduction could be added. :)
Exceptional producing or not?
I'd rather perfect foundation than exceptional herd helpers. I always just sell the ex per/pros, which isn't bad exactly because I often get 600k or more for new release exceptionals, but I'd love to have more perfect foundation rank specials to use in a new era line especially around the June events and era change.
What base colors do you like to see?
I love liver chestnuts (though not breeding that much in my new lines) and silver black. I avoid brown ever since the agouti update, it just doesn't look the same. I also like true breeding black pearl.
What genes get you excited?
Favorite genes combos right now and for the foreseeable future:
ND1, DP, S+, P+
champagne, gray, gray reduction
hom tobiano, belton spotting, hom snowflake appy
splash M, belton spotting
nexus, chinchilla (I know there's gonna be no chinchilla herd helper... :( )
nexus, hom KP, hom W20 (so only KP clouds show with no other white to distract)
I do have and like some satin (especially to add some color to non-fantasy lines) but I'd gladly forgo it for more S+, P+, belton spotting, DP, and maybe even gray reduction or splash M herd helpers.
What current herd helpers are your favorite?
My favorite rank special herd helpers:
Baroque
Black Sea
Blue Hawaiian
Breaking Bread
Catch A Blue Moon
Cherry Drop (for GMT projects)
Chocolate Cupcake
Clean Slate
Dark Chocolate (special favorite)
Baba Marta
Festival of Lights
Freaky Friday (special favorite)
Imani
Legendary Lights
Made in the Shade
Midnight Clear
Orca
Pomegranate
Root Beer Float (special favorite)
Satin Party Dress
Shaved Ice
Silver Pocket Watch (special favorite)
Taco Town (Even though it can't be het brown anymore. Maybe it could have DP?)
Tan Lines
The Blackest Night
The Hope of Dawn (huge bigtime favorite!)
Vault of Stars
White Wedding (Except that W1 can be lethal with tobiano. That's a problem in my current lines but it's perfect otherwise.)
Exceptional rank special herd helpers I wish came in perfect foundation:
Bring Back the Sun
Dove of Peace
Evergreen Boughs (Not as important now that varnish is GMTable off of foundations.)
Hidden Gates
Lapis Lazuli
New Coke
Nightingale Songs
Olive Branch
Pieces of Eight
Pretzel Twist
Shadow of Mars
Solemn and Still
Song of Sleipnir
Songs of Old
Storm Warning
The Bronze Age
Yule Log Ashes
What would the most useful herd helper for your account look like?
Right now, the most useful coat color (minus non-createable fancy genes) for my account would look like this:
E/E a/a nd1/nd1 Z/Z Ch/Ch Sty/Sty DP/DP
TO/TO Bl/Bl LP/LP snow/snow
Two genotypes I'd LOVE to see as herd helpers if possible:
Gray gold champagne tobiano (with belton) appaloosa (snowflake, no blanket) with gray reduction (Could be called "Flecks of Gold"?)
e/e a/a G/G Ch/Ch gr/gr
TO/TO Bl/Bl LP/LP snow/snow
Silver smoky black with S+ (My favorite coat in the game!)
E/E a/a Cr/- Z/Z S+/Sty DP/DP
What do you not want to see and why?
The only gene I particularly avoid is wild bay. (So sad that Witching Hour can't get rid of it anymore since agouti update... :( ) The only time I like wild bay is with Onyx or hom Nexus with KP clouds. I kinda like the look of a silver wild bay, a bright red horse with bright blue mane and tail, but I won't want a whole herd of it.
I have some chocolate but I don't really go for it except on brown chinchillas. It seems pointless to use chocolate to make black pigment brown instead of just breeding for liver chestnuts, especially since it makes the horse fantasy and no longer eligible for era clubs. The exception for me is with chinchilla when the black pigment pattern is unique, like on browns, so there's no way to get that look with red based anyway.
I don't care for any of the brown herd helpers since the agouti update either, as some of them don't have enough darkening genes to actually make them brown and anyway brown doesn't have the same shading pattern that it used to have (I loved the old shading pattern of browns, the new one looks more indistinguishable from bay.). But I used to love A Pint of Guinness, A Rhythm of Four, Candy Appleloosa, Paradise Play, Yule Log (all come out bay now because they don't trigger enough darkening genes, there might be others but I don't recall right off), and True Breeding Brown Appy (not RS but was one of my favs).
I love appaloosa but I'm avoiding it these days (except for snowflake) because you can never have a true breeding leopard appy line and I've found it more disappointing than exciting to hope for the perfect combo of het genes (like a D/nd1 chocolate palomino blanket appy) and rarely getting it intact. The only gene I love in the het state enough to keep breeding and hoping for it is cream. I love it on chocolate palominos, brown buckskins, and silver smoky black with S+ (all time favorite coat color!)
I like chimeras except for GMT projects because I do a lot of my GMTing in the lab and it gets expensive. So if it doesn't already have all of the little genes I want so that it needs only RGS edits, I'd rather it were non-chimeric. (That's why I love Cherry Drops more than Pomegranates, since it would cost more to get rid of the extra agouti promoter alleles.) I don't often make use of having different genes on different strands as I'd rather have true breeding horses. -
Other thoughts...
As an aside, I've also thought it would be great to be able to create exceptional rank specials as perfect foundations instead, or maybe "unboost" unbred foundations to make them perfect foundation and up the era by one. Could that be done? I do prefer perfect foundations myself as I tend to focus on newest era only, especially around the era change time. I've started breeding some exceptionals simply because it's almost impossible to avoid, I always end up with some in my herd. Now that I have a premium upgrade to pull eggs I like my few exceptional mares better. Otherwise it's very expensive to try to fill a 100-acre pasture with exceptional DP mares or something. I might start using exceptionals for any new fantasy lines I create in the future though, since era doesn't matter for the leaderboards and they'll be more marketable as exceptionals.
Another thought, though it would be a completely new programming element to add to the game, I always thought it would be neat to be able to stack herd helpers, maybe for a cost like IVs or "stack tokens." The price could increase each time you load another herd helper into your stack, so in that way it would cost more to create a very fancy combination, but you would be able to pick different color herd helpers and then stack an exceptional pro/per herd helper into the stack to make it exceptional, and in that way you could make any perfect rank special into an exceptional.Thanked by 1Fiddler -
I almost forgot! A hom dun, DFP1 herd helper could be a nice new special edition rank special herd helper. :)
-
Exceptional producing or not? Personally I only use exceptional producing herd helpers for the foundations!
What base colors do you like to see? I LOVE brown and have been loving bay dun lately also. I'd love to see herd helpers that come with at least one copy of Dun! Also a huge fan of DP, if the herd helper doesn't come with it, I'll mostly likely add DP. Het DP helps keep projects down in price :))
What genes get you excited? DP, S+, Dun, Brown, brown/bay dun, tobiano, I love gray since the update too. Belton spotting has been fun to play with too :)
What current herd helpers are your favorite?
Dove of Peace
Candy Appleloosa
Light in the Dark
New Coke
Pretzel Twist
Shadow of Mars
What would the most useful herd helper for your account look like? Bay/Brown Dun with Hom DP and tobiano. P+ and S+ also a bonus!
What do you not want to see and why? Frame, W genes except w20.
-
DP
Sooty+
Brindle
And a vote for yellow papered horses for Era 15 :D
I prefer no appaloosa genes but I don't mind removing them in the lab
My favorite HH are Shadow of Mars, Chocolate Cupcake and Nightingale Song
I like the idea of a HH with DFP1 too!Starstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest
Betony707 on Forest & Mesa -
I prefer Exceptional producing, but that’s not a big deal for myself. I’d really love to see more roans! Blue, Bay, Red roans...I love them all and I feel like we don’t see bay/red or other roans much in special rank herd helpers. I most enjoy heavy Sabinos or just Sabinos in general. I’d be excited to see sooty, DP, Dun, Leopard Appaloosas, and of course BRINDLES. My favorite current herd helpers are Blue Hawaiian, New Coke, Peach Ice-Cream, Pomegranate, and Texas Tea. The most useful HH for my account would be a “Bay Roan Sabino and Blue Roan Appaloosa”. I’d love to fill my barn with more roan babies!! I don’t really dislike/not want to see anything in particular, but if I had to pick I’d say I would rather not see any champagne or cream horses. The reason being I’m just not really a fan of those particular colors and feel like we see them often.
Thank you very much for asking our options! -
I like bay horses particularly if they come with sooty and/or DP. I really like S+. I also like ee with one copy of Cr and one of Prl - that would be a great HH if we don't have it already. I use both ex prod and perf foundations so having both is good. Unlike other people, I really dislike tobiano because it takes so long to load up (sorry).
I think we already have a great range of Herd Helpers so if you want to add anything else that's fine by me, but I understand what a lot of work goes into this sort of thing. Actually, I don't understand it at all because computers are a mystery to me, but I do appreciate all your hard work. :)Thanked by 1Treble -

@Ichigo I third or fourth this idea LOL. I always wondered what a horse would look like if it was at least HET for every gene, minus the Limited Edition Genes.
I've recently started playing around with this idea of 'Mustangs' in game. And only recently started looking at HH that are not ExPro or ExPerf. The idea of some 'pinto' horses with multiple white patterns sounds interesting.
Or maybe even a 'wild horse' dun, like a bay dun with reduced points and P+
I find people are always looking for dark horses, like HOM sty and DP because it also impacts the expression of other genes in the game. -
Personally, I only breed Exceptional foundations. I'm not an Era breeder, so that makes no difference to me.
My two non-fantasy Foundation lines are (1)Gray Black and (2)a mix of KIT genes(my favorites being M, W8, and TO) and Appy with Snowflake. My second line is mostly about variety, as far as color is concerned. Shadow of Mars and Solemn And Still are two of my favorite herd helpers for that line.
I also love chimeric foundations for the variety of possibilities that can be added to each strand. A chimeric exceptional herd helper with Belton and Snowflake and/or W8 would be pretty amazing to me. The only genes I actively avoid are the lethal white genes(W1,W2,W10). -
@cheshirefarms, there was already a herd helper that was wild type or przewalski type called "Songs of Old"
-
I also love the True Grullo Tobiano Splash herd helper. It would be amazing to have a rank special of it that's perfect foundation with a copy of belton. :)Thanked by 1Fiddler
-
Favorite HH:
Light In The Dark
Shadow of Mars
Song of Sleipnir
Nightengale Song
I breed with Exceptional foundations only so I have boosted some really pretty Rank Specials from some events to keep them in my lines.
I think another non varnish Appy would be fun to incorporate (only Evergreens have this). I like Appy spots but dislike the fading to white that occurs with varnish and snowflake.
I love all livers - liver red duns and chocolate palominos are my fave. I always love the Sooty Plus dapples on these bases.
White 3 is still my favorite Kit gene but I keep a lot of Roan, Tobiano and minimal Sabino. I hate that W20 maxes out Sabino so I try to cull it from my lines. I'll always love Kit M too.
Kit Promoter and DFP are my favorite extra genes and most of my studs carry them.
Ideal herd helper - White Spotted Chocolate Palomino with KP2Thanked by 1annismyrph -
I personally think a champagne or lesser seen white gene would be nice, sb2, w8 or 10.
Like a classic champagne, sometimes pearl, with white 8 would be really cool!
It's a long shot but I'd love to see a gold champagne grey with rabicano and kp2. It creates this gorgeous bronze color, it could be called Copper Penny! Or Iron Forge or something :)) Rabicano with Kp2 has always been a favorite of mine and I think it'd be such a fun HH. I feel like there's not too much rabicano out there.

@Humboldt did you know we can see the Vrn genes now on Foundations? I only recently learned that, which means we can also remove them now.

A coke float! New Coke with Tobiano.
A true breeding dark brown Tobiano.
Brown with satin.
Just more hh with gray, brown and/or satin and pearl. -
My only request with Rank Specials is that some of them stay as perfect C/Yellow foundations. I’ve just never taken as much of an interest in my Expro foundations, no matter how much I’ve tried to get a line going.
I also love DP and big big spot AppaloosasThanked by 1Cavalynn -

Personally, right now and for as long as I can foresee, I'm mostly looking for E/E a/a horses. With cream, dun, gray, champagne, and/or silver would be great too.
I have a small amount of liver and gray champagne e/e a/a horses at the moment. I love gray gold champagnes and will probably keep a red-based line going, but it's not my main focus right now for new lines.
I'm also looking for a few non-sooty palominos and silver buckskins (really yellowish ones) to breed into my nexus line for some really dark midnight blue nexus horses.
I'm not really interested in brown until all of the darkening alleles are working to make the darkest version possible again. I'm not complaining about that, it's just a good excuse to wait on starting up a new brown line so I don't strain my pasture space so much. :) -
I've got lines of brown, bay, and liver chestnut. Pretty much everything works with a little tweaking.
-
Brown, bay, dark buckskin, black. Also a big fan of chocolate palomino pearl or silver buckskin pearl, but I love almost all colors, as long as they have sooty @};-
-
@herzloyde yesss to chocolate palomino pearl or silver buckskin pearl. So bay or red bases for me!
