Need your feedback on this horse outline
  • Let me know what you think about this saddlebred line art.

ETA: Thanks to your feedback we have updated the image to be of a more extreme saddlebred type. Let me know what you think! (note the muscle lines are to help us with shaping and not final)

  • Very nice! I like that the stance isn't too exaggerated, but still typical of a Saddlebred.

  • Lovely! I love the high head and tail set. I always missed a high head carriage but I could see it would be impossible with the frame size. Is this going to be a new horse type in the game?

  • Maybe they're going to be intermediate bone weights? I always thought that would be an amazing idea! :D
  • If I absolutely had to make a criticism of this (if this is going to be a new horse weight in the game), it would be that there's a very slight amount of perspective to it towards the rump, whereas the current horse outlines are very square-on side shots from end to end.
  • I love this, the only thing I would say as feedback is that I'm used to associating Saddlebreds with a neck that is slightly.... IDK either thinner or longer? But I'm not super familiar with them either

  • Love this! I think it looks wonderful
  • Love it! If you are looking for small constructive comments, I have two:
    1. I'm used to seeing a longer, more elegant neck
    2. It seems like most saddlebred "halter stances" have the front legs straight underneath the shoulder, vs those parked out too.

Linking a few photos to show what I mean, even though many hind ends are much more extreme than desired.

This one is pretty over extreme.

  • Like @Starstruck2 said, I feel like the neck should be thinner, especially towards the head.

I feel like it more resembles a hackney pony with the proportions (maybe the back length?) but then again hackneys and saddlebreds aren’t that far off in looks and body structure.

Also, the jaw could be better defined to help give it that refined, delicate look that saddlebreds have.

Honestly, I wish I had a quarter of the artistic talent it took to draw that ^:)^
  • @CLynnRose, I think it's the fact that you see the off back leg. If you hide the back legs the rest of the outline looks straight on.
  • I don't think that's it. Even when I erase the far back leg, to me anyway, the hindquarters and near back leg still look like I'm seeing them slightly from the front. Maybe it's the line of the stifle and the flank that's doing it? The gap between the line of the muscle and the outline makes it look to me like I'm seeing part of the front of the leg. That line doesn't merge in with the outline of the leg like it would full from the side.

ETA: And maybe fully from the side, the top of the rump would be slightly flatter.

  • @ClynnRose I agree that it doesn't seem quite straight on like the game horses, there's a feeling of a slight angle and the head seems to be just barely looking away. I don't see it as a problem but it is a bit of a difference from the other horses. And that impression might change with color IDK, I'm not at all good with anything artistic or perspective in pictures :))

  • @lecobb8 that last one is a Morgan - Mizrahi I believe. Top producing Morgan sire. I think that photo is a great representation for an upheaded breed without an extreme parked out hind.

I am excited for this if this is happening - morgan horse obsessed over here.

The line art is nice, but I agree with @clynnrose, there is an angle to it

  • This one the head is turned towardsthe camera but straight on otherwise.

  • It just means that it is slightly different than the other line arts for the game in that those all seem straight on. It gives the impression the horse is bent or looking away from the camera. If this is for a new bone type or horse art, I just expected them to be all in the same "camera angle". Its not a bad thing, just wasn't sure if tack will be used and how it will appear.

  • Oh I like! And fingers crossed that it is coming. I may have to change some breeding strategies.
  • I actually greatly prefer the sideways angle to it :) The only thing I noticed was the jawline gave me the impression it was looking away a bit.

    Gorgeous linework!!
  • Linework reminds me of someone.... ;)

And to be fair, Morgan lines had a lot of influence on the modern saddlebred. Perhaps we need some Morgan linework.....

I do think the quality is there, I can't really add anything that wasn't already said here but I am excited to see this!
  • Updated line art based on your feedback from all 3 servers. I have hidden the prior line art so as not to impact your impression of this one.

Also please note, that while we are taking feedback on this, we will not be making any major changes at this point.

  • I love the changes. :)
  • The neck is much improved ! The hind end is as well , the only thing is the placement of the front feet; the near foot should be much more square to the body than at the angle.

  • We won't be making them perfectly square because of how much people like seeing all 4 feet. :)

  • Maybe the front leg placement could be reversed so that the side we see has the leg straight up and down to the shoulder rather than stretched forward? And the far leg could be forward slightly and it wouldn't throw off the overall look of the front end.
    Thanked by 1annismyrph
  • We are not interested in moving it at this time. This is how many reference images of saddlebreds are stood. Not everything needs to be a perfectly squared-up halter stance. :)

  • The head doesn't look right to me, it looks too short and blocky. Typically the head should be as long as the shoulder from wither to elbow, this head is too short.

  • We appreciate everyone's feedback. At this point, we are finished with this image and no longer making alterations to it. We have moved on to our next set of line art.

  • Looking at the photographs, I do like the ones that have the head turned slightly towards us. The sensation is sort of like we are there with the horse instead of just looking at it.
  • Looking great. If you do decide to modify, a simple line adjustment of the hindleg will help with some visual balance. The slope from the stifle to the hock could be moved back so that the legs don't appear thick and stiff. Other than that I think it fits well with the current game art, and is drawn in such a way that it could pass for a number of different gaited breeds.
  • oops duplicate post.
