About the Sport of Kirball
In the World of Valdemar, horses are a way of life. They are used for transportation, for war, and of course for sport. One of the sports that developed in Valdemar, is Kirball.
It was designed as a military training game to help Heralds and Guards work together. The game is played with 2 teams of 12, with each team having 4 Herald & Companion riders, 4 normal Riders, and 4 Guards on Foot. The game is played with a ball that can be kicked by hooves and feet, carried by hand, or hit by a club.
The playing field is designed with various terrain types (rough and level) that you might encounter on the battle field. At either end of the field is a tower the team must defend. Each tower has an open door, windows, and a flag.
The game objective is to score points by getting the ball into the opposing teams door or windows, stealing their flag, or occupying their tower.
The sport grew into such popularity that other towns and cities started having their own matches, but without Heralds and Companions. Because normal horses do not have the same stamina and endurance as Companions, Riders have multiple strings of horses they play with during the game. This sport created a booming demand for high quality horses and ponies, and it was just as much as a competition between horses breeders as it was between teams. -
About Our Kirball Program
Various types of horses were used in Kirball, from the swift and long legged Courser type, to the sturdy and enduring Hobby Pony.
Our breeding program at Cheshire Farms combines the two body types for an ideal Kirball Pony. Our ponies have speed and power, with strong quarters and greater bone density.
The Hobby Ponies we used in our line mostly come from the Mine Country. These ponies are great in a scrum, not bothered by being pinned in by other horses and riders. Their offspring have inherited their strong dense bones and healthy hooves.
While the Courser type horses pass along their speed, power and agility. As well as lending just enough sensitivity that they are more entuned with their riders ques during this fast and quick thinking sport. -
The Kirball Pony Standard
The Kirball Pony ranges from 13.2hh to 14.2hh, with the ideal being 14hh. Smaller ponies are not ideal breeding stock and should be avoided, however taller stock can be used.
They have Light to Medium bone weight depending on the breeding, with a Medium Bone being preferred. Light boned Riding Ponies are used to maintain the Sport Pony type incase the breeding becomes to heavy and looses agility.
While the Kirball Pony is a blended type, with a focus on performance characteristics, they do have some uniformity when it comes to color. Horses can be solid Bay, Brown, Black, and Chestnut with shades ranging on the darker side due to Dense Pheomelanin and Sooty+ genes. These are just the genes commonly seen, mostly due to the use of Minining Ponies.
Because putting together a great team of horses is such an art form, many team owners or sponsors like a uniform color across all horses.
In addition to the genes above, some other genes that are present in our Kirball Ponies are Tigers Eye1, Non-Dun1, Pangare+, and Rabicano. There is one mare that tested as recessive for Pearl, and while we're not breeding specifically for that, it will be interesting to see if it ever crops up generations from now. -
Naming Conventions in Kirball Ponies
Ponies registering in the breeding books follow an Alphabetical pattern based on their Sires. With foundation Ponies registering under the letter "A", and each foal crop afterwards progressing through the alphabet.
Regardless of gender, all Foundation horses entering in the breeding books are registered with a name which begins with "A".
Offspring will be named following their Sires. If their Sires name begins with "B", regardless of the Dam, that generation of foals will begin with "C".
In this way, you can easily see the generations in the pedigree or who you are breeding to (all "C" names would be 3rd generation).
A horse which is Boot Strapped, intentionally or otherwise, is marked with BS at the end of their name. Likewise a horse that is Boosted is marked with a B, and Maxed is marked with a MX. -
