Shin'a'in Horses- Wild Horse Breeding Program with Belton
-
With the introduction of Breeds, I'm so happy to combine my favorite Authors (Mercedes Lackey & Larry Dixon) with this game. If you like fantasy, magic and horses that aren't horses (iykyk), you'll love the World of Valdemar. In the World of Valdemar, there is a historic nomadic people called the Shin'a'in. These are people of the Plains, and horses are considered their family, often referring to them as siblings. Over 2,000 years ago, magic was used to help improve their horses ancestors. Giving them more muscles, greater bone density, higher stamina and uncanny intelligence. Over time these horses went from being herd animals to pack animals, and have often had their trainability and intelligence compared to dogs. While they are most commonly known for their Battle Steeds, the Shin'a'in bred horses for all different types of work. The horses at Cheshire Farms represent a fusion between Riding Mount and Battle Steed. They make great mounts for sports where agility, endurance, and stamina are needed.About Our Breeding Program
The Shin'a'in Horses should be of Medium type, with heights varying based on their purpose. They can come in any solid color, with Tobiano*, Roan and Grey being represented as well. Other common color modifiers seen in the herds are Dun (D and nd1), Agouti Promoter (A+), Sooty (Sty), Dense Pheomelanin (DP), Pigment Density Regulator (Bl), Tigers Eye (TE1 and TE2) and Pangare (P+).The Shin'a'in Standard
Authors NoteBecause information on these horses are pieced together from little bits of different stories, I've taken liberties to fill in some information. For example the reference to white patterns are not made in the books, but when I think of these horses, or the Culture, I picture the horse culture of Mongolia. Many of the horses in Mongolia, as well as some old-world breeds, have Tobiano in them.

The Shin'a'in line at Cheshire Farms started with 2 Foundation Stallions (Hakan & Toniano), and 10 Foundation Mare Lines (Baran, Bebek, Burma, Ekmel, Ferhat, Gul, Kara, Kaya, Kumal, and Yulaf). Later we added 4 more foundation mares (Apala, Dwyn, Ita, and Gilah). This naming convention follows the mare line, and all pure bred foundation horses are designated as Shinain in front of their name. Lined horses do not have the Shinain prefix to their name. The foundation stallion's name, Shinain Hakan a Altan, tells you he is a Purebred Shinain named Hakan out of Mare Line Altan. Sometimes the suffix of the stallions name Hakan links that Stallion to his Stallion Line. In this case Shinain Hakan a Altan's Stallion Line is the Line of Kan. Occasionally stallions have unique given names, other times they might repeat their Sires name or Stallion Line name.Naming Conventions of the Shin'a'in
Regardless of gender, offspring will always inherit the Mare Lines name from their Dam. Mares are highly valued and considered of great influence, so it's culturally important to be able to trace the Dam Line all the way back to the beginning. When future mares are born, they are given a unique name before their Mare Lines name, Sari a Yulaf. In some cases if the mare is very significant, she will then be given her own line. In this case, the new line would be Sari, and records will trace back to Line Yulaf.Since these horses do not carry any special genes, they will all be available publicly and will be able to be found using the search option here.Horses For Sale & Auction

Fiddler: Here's a link to all the Valdemar books. Not all of them feature the Shin'a'in people, and probably most of them don't. It's been quite a while since I've read them, and some of the more recent books I'm still waiting to read. The whole world of Valdemar, from the earliest beginnings onward are truly great reading.

And here's a link to information about the Shin'a'in specifically.

@Fiddler the whole series of books are such a great read. Mercedes Lackey (aka Misty) is a fantastic writer. But good gods does she love her angst. So some of the stories there is rape and abuse, child neglect, ect. It's not the main theme, but it's something tragic and horrific she had her characters endure and overcome.
The Vows and Honor trilogy is probably where most the Shin'a'in information comes from since Tarma is from the Clans. Other stuff is kinda picked up in commentary from other books. Like someone mentioning a history in passing. Or having to pass through the huge Shin'a'in fair on their journey ect.
I haven't read all the anthologies yet, but there are a number of short stories written by Lackey and other authors, and some of them involve Shin'a'in or their customs. -
thank you, i will read the Vows and Honor trilogy. there are A LOT of books. it helps to narrow it down.

I've been surprised at how many people there are, especially here on H&J, that love the Valdemar series. I still have a nearly worn out copy of the 3 Arrows of the Queen books! And she's still putting out new ones!

@ConfluenceStable I love how much there is to read, and how her work inspired other authors to write about the world as well. I found out about her in high school when my PE teacher gave my gay male friend a copy of The Last Herald Mage. Queer Horse crazy me saw the cover and instantly asked to borrow it next. Had my dad driving me to Barnes and Nobel shortly after for the other two. Considering the ending of that series I don't think it was the best choice to give to the 2 queer kids in class to read lol. But it got me hooked.
A few years later and I had a house fire, causing everything I owned to be destroyed. But I kept that series. It had smoke and water damage, but I kept it. It just meant that much to me. I had wanted to meet her back then, but for a time she wasn't doing book tours because of a stalker.
About 6 years ago I found out she would be at a convention down in Miami, FL. I bought a 1 day ticket, got out of work at 3pm, drove to Miami (about an hour and a half away), got stupidly lost. Finally pulled up to the convention around 7pm. Here I am waddling in carrying a huge cooler of diet coke (inside joke), and a bag of my burnt copy of The Last Herald Mage, The Black Gryphon, and the Valdemar Companion. Trying to find her booth, but getting lost in all the displays. I walked past her like 3 times before seeing her talking to someone else. Gods I felt so awkward, but I got to tell her my story. I'm pretty sure I cried lol. I had just missed Larry Dixon (actually passed him on the bench outside the hotel). She forged his signature LOL, signed all my books, and gave me a free Omnibus of The Last Herald Mage. It was worth every minute I spent lost in Miami thinking I wasn't going to get to see her.
Now I mostly listen to her stuff on Audio while I work. My library has a great collection of hers, and then I've bought the others. But I still have them in paper back as well lol. I'm a bit of a book dragon. -

So in this series, there are many references to a Goddess called The Star-Eyed, and she has four aspects; Maiden, Warrior, Mother, Crone.
I wanted to add some mares with the Tiger Eye gene, as if they have been touched by The Star-Eyed. So I introduce you to the 4 sisters;
Shinain Irja a Gilah
Shinain Phawta a Apala
Shinain Dowr a Ita
Shinain Edita a Dwyn -
