Some help / advice needed re foals from this season.
-
Ok, so I've pretty much wrapped up my first breeding season since I rejoined after being away for about 3 years. Needless to say A LOT has changed and I have heaps of questions!
1. In regards to foundation stallions, do they ever paper better than C?
2. I have a colt by a C Papered foundation stallion. Charlie has kept him intact so I papered him and he papered C too. Does this mean he will be a better sire than his father?
3. Are C papered lined colts even worth keeping as a breeding prospect or should I be aiming a bit higher? -
1. To the best of my knowledge, the only foundation stallions who paper better than C are Exceptional Producers and Exceptionally Perfect Herd Helpers, who tend to paper B. On the other hand, regular create mares do sometimes paper Red, although Yellow papered foundation mares are also to be found. I haven't worked out the exact ratio there.
2. Probably not, but it might happen. Charlie's decision implies only that the son is not significantly worse than his sire. I've occasionally comparison tested C papered 2nd gens to their sires and have gotten the "about as good as" response, which implies that the son's breeding ability might fall anywhere from "slightly less good" to "slightly better than" his sire. I have had lined colts paper the same as their B or A papered sires and yet comparison test superior to them. Star papers, being the highest there are, will produce superior sons with no higher paper to be awarded. However, most of their male offspring are "about as good as" or even "worse than" even when they paper Star.
3. If the son has a rare color or pattern you really, really want to pursue, you might choose to keep one intact and breed him at least until you get a colt that tests superior to his sire. It all depends on you and your goals for your stable. I tend to geld C papered second gens without trying a comparison test. I would definitely not keep a C papered colt from any higher generation, no matter what. -
Thank you! Things make a bit more sense now. Just trying to go through a) my stallions and b) my foals and decide who gets to keep their bits ;)

I have an A papered foundation Stallion.... he is an 'exceptional producer' with a 5% breeding boost.... He is yet to produce a colt who is superior to him (only first season though!). He did produce one colt who was about the same but I gelded him as I really want to continue improving my lines, not settling for good enough.Post edited by zzahra84 at 2014-11-12 17:59:55

Yep, that double boost will do it. You'd have to breed him to similarly boosted mares to have a hope of getting a superior colt from him, I expect--exceptional producer plus a 5% breeding boost.Thanked by 1Ammit

The cheapest way to use a stallion like that is cover him over ExPro or normal foundation mares, get a band of daughters and then cross those with a second gen that is superior to his sire. You are extremely unlikely to get a superior son breeding a stallion to mares 10% lower breeding ability then he is.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Thank you Ammit,
I am only using him over top notch, ExPro and perfect foundations..... So will head in that direction to improve my lines :)
