Organising multiple lines
  • I have always favored easy organization, and never had more than 2 lines: one high performance, and one from foundations and up, with focus on fun and playing with colors and genetics.
    Very easy to manage

But then came the Breed Characteristics, and so far I need at least 3 of them, probably more in the future :))
So how do you organize your different lines?
How many horses do you have in your separate lines?
Do you have strict color rules for them? Eras? How do you do it with pastures and barns? Other things to think about? What makes the lines exciting?

    What is your best advice?

  • I'm going to follow this thread. I've combined every line I started into one big line because I don't know the best way to organize!

  • So far, pastures have been my best means of organization. Since I have yet to control my foundation creating impulses (*face palm*), I don't currently have much barn freedom on my Galway account. :-w I'm working on that. Keep your eyes peeled for a major foundation sale. :))

Luckily, I have much more space on this account. Once this breeding season is over, I plan to organize my 3 lines by barn. My Middle Earth line is just a small one that I am doing purely for eye candy and giggles. I'll just need 2 30 stall barns for it. My Anything Goes line is relatively small as well. Most of the foundations are Ee A?/?? and I just take any result and breed from there. I'll only need a couple 60 stall barns for it. My main line, however, will need lots of space. Once I save up my IV's(and dealt with my foundation issue), I intend to merge my 2 stables. Since my main focus is on my Cuties line, I see no need to have 2 stables. That's how I kept getting overwhelmed and taking long hiatus breaks. :(

Those are my current tactics t this point. When I first started playing, I actually needed the two stables to keep my lines organized. Now that I am just down to the one main line, I just plan on using my barns to and pastures to keep things looking tidy. :D

    I hope this helps.

  • The way I’ve been doing it is everything funnels into my main Era 7 line lol That may change with BCs.

But pretty much I have one big lines with a lot of little sub lines within it.

I have 2 completely separate lines right now. One to utilize the Friesian BC and my era 6 line that traces back to some of my OG horses.

The Friesian line might get collapsed into my main line:. Either because I loose interest in keeping it separate or want to make room for something new.

I seem to loose interest in any separate line I try to maintain.

  • I have 2 "main" lines and a couple of Littles : My Mains are basically WB ( Now PRE) BlueRoan Snowflake Appies, and RH ( now Polish Arab ) Livers, they are separated in barns and pastures br generation and color. My "littles" lines are Phantoms, TMSG, Apple Picking , DMSP and TMSG, they are small enough all the 2g fit into 1 210 barn then the higher gens are in their own separate barns by Generation and "phantom" Marking. I also have a "medium" Mushroom line , and the collectibles ( which will become the Traditional Cob when it comes out lol ) and no longer be "collectibles" but "ponies"

  • I have way to many lines happening at once. No organization what so ever. The only thing saving me right now is that all my lines are era bred lines and ive just been using the search engine and putting my stable id and the era im looking up followed by the pt . Once i get past that point ill have to figure something else out.
  • The lines I’m actively breeding are cap-level/boosted, era 11, era 15, and watercolor. I have more breeding stock than pasture space, but I only bother the breed what will fit in the pastures because I don’t have the time or patience to hand breed lol

Within my cap-level/boosted line I’ve got a KP line, but those tend to get a little melded together since they’re all the same ability level and it’s not based on era

I keep smaller size barns (anywhere from 30 to 90) and sort my lines as much as possible. I keep my primary pasture as whatever my highest priority breeding line is — right now it’s got 60 era 15 2nd gens in it

(120 pasture mares, 5 stallions) My cap level/boosted line doesn’t have any color restrictions but I don’t have any RH in this line. The majority are WBs, with a few drafts sprinkled in there. (KP line accounts for 30ish pasture mares and 1 stallion)

(30ish pasture mares, 3 stallions) My era 11 line is out of Cavalynn’s Morel line, so there’s a lot of S+, P+, mushroom, and snow. All are RH with the Polish Arabian BC

(2G: 60 pasture mares, 2 stallions) My era 15 line is all out of a GE stud that was gifted to me this past summer by Tzano — theres S+, P+, Bl, DP, Z, D, TO. I’m up to 3rd gens on this line. All of them are SP (there might be a few short WBs that have slipped through)

(10 pasture mares, 2 stallions) My watercolor line is super small at the moment because I just started it, but it’s **Star/**Gold WBs and RH (Polish Arabian BC)

My big thing is that I try to keep the stallion to mare ratio around 1:30 for the lines I’m actively breeding. Whichever stallions meet my color criteria are then maxed out. For example, I have 60 era 15 2G mares in a pasture and I have 2 corresponding stallions that are hom for all the genes I want and are maxed out.

I also keep a barn strictly for foal sorting purposes. My largest pasture is 60, so I have a 60 stall barn that, after breeding a pasture, I put all of that pasture’s foals into and then sort them into their respective barns from there. This allows me to keep from mucking up any horses that I may have left in my primary barn

  • Thank you so much for all the answers so far. I have just finished sorting all of my barns and pastures after reading your advises
  • Mostly I use Tattoo's to separate my lines, GG for gentle giants, the magic bottle one for my Tiny Dancers (need to work on them) and the star mage for my Morelshroms

  • So pastures are my best friend for sorting lines. But Google Spreadsheets is my best tool. I bring it up every time I breed and every time I sort.

    Untitled

That is almost all of them. I don't like how our barn pages list everything in a paragraph, and I find it's easy to miss a pasture when breeding, and hard to find the one you want. So I put it in a spread sheet so it's a list, organized by name and gen. I have the stallions I want to use, or rotate out every season. And I also have a note about what the pasture needs based on the program stallion.
  • My sorting... barns, I have one barn for each breed of stallions. I name them "0 breed stallions" so that they're all at the top of the barn list.

I also have one barn for each breed of foals (intact colts/fillies from age 0 to 3, at 4 they get moved to either their breeds stallion barn or one of the breeding pastures). These are named the acronym for "young breed club of america" lol... my older sister joked I should call my original foal barn the "young foal club of anerica" or the YFCA. Like the YMCA. I've kept that theme because my older sister started it lol... but as a bonus, since they all start with Y, they're all in one spot at the bottom of the barn list.

In between I have my six show barns, which are all the geldings, spayed mares and any stallions/mares I don't intend to breed. These are named "Show Stock 001 through 006". There used to be a lot more, but as I progressed through the game I started to be able to afford bigger show barns, so all my collection of small barns eventually became just six 1,000 horse barns. I also have a "retired broodmare show barn", which will be any 10 to 20 year old broodmare I've pulled from the pastures so they can get a 10 year show career... I just started that so we'll see how it goes.

Then I have my 1000 horse "auction" barns where I put any horses from the show stock I'll be auctioning off to make room for new younger show stock. And a "sentimental" barn where I keep horses that I'll be keeping until they die of old age. Mostly horses who have earned ribbons or trophies which are also the ones who get names to commemorate their achievement. Since with up to 1,000 show horses constantly cycling through the show strings I can't think of enough original names for them all. And one sale barn for when I get a rank special herd helper and I don't need it but don't want to waste it either since I know a lot of people like them. I just sell them for 2500 now, but they come pre gene tested and performance tested so they're actually cheaper than creating one in a way.

My pastures are easier - three main pastures for each breed (still short 2 for my one halo appaloosa line because I don't have enough mares to fill two more) and a couple extras for new genes I just bought that I'm trying to work into one of the official breeds. And I use the main pasture right now for breeding a new gene into my main riding horse breed
  • I just recently restructured my lines a bit. I do almost all of my breeding in pastures, where my broodmares stay 24/7.
10-acre pasture for my newest line, which I just started with four mares and 1 stallion.
Two 100-acre pastures for my high level show producers.
30-acre pastures for the foundations of each of my even lines.
Two 100-acre pastures for the 2nd generation breeding of two lines, and a 60-acre pasture for the 2nd and 3rd generation breeding of my other even line.
For breeding stock barns, I put babies and two-year-olds in a 210 stall barn, and 3+ year-olds in another 210 stall barn until I can make space in the appropriate pasture. The only non-AI breeding I do out of pasture is my backwards breeding project, which is in 120 stall barn. My regularly used studs are all in one barn titled "Pasture Boys".
As my lines progress, I'll change which generation is in which pasture, but I don't have enough breeding age 4Gs to pasture breed yet.
Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

  • I have had one main line that I started the game with. I have a just LP line. This line has had all the newest "Appie" genes incorporated into it and has no White, Tob, Splash or Sabino in it. In that line there is now two different lines and I was able to do that with the Manage my Breeds. I have the Snow/Halo line, which is what the original line has become over the years and now the no snow/or Halo line, which means I'm holding onto a few more than I did before, as I spayed or gelded those foals who didn't get snow or halo. In splitting these two I created new Breeds for them. My Fulminare Breed; which is the original Appie line and my Sanguislunae line is the one that doesn't have to have both Snow and Halo. (But still no White, Tob, Sab, Splash, Frame) These two lines are together in their prospective generation barn.

The secondary line I referred to as the "Chrome" line, and this line held everything that wasn't the Lp side of things. I also a satin line that is the same as my Appie line just with Satin, and the newest is my Fantasy line. I mange all of them with Barns as I like to make sure that everything hits the shows at some part and my pastures are 30 stall only to keep the breeding numbers down.

Over the years I have culled these breeding guys hard ... hard. I have just started a Bootstrapped Barn and that one is kept apart from everyone. My Chrome line got a new name and a new Breed Characteristic to keep them well apart from the main Appie line, Susurrus is the name and Polish Arab is the Breed Characteristic. My Fantasy Horses also got a new breed name, Pavornocturnum and they two have a new Breed Characteristic Infernal. My Satin line still carries the original Breed name Reverentia, but will be getting a new Breed Characteristic when it is released.

I have 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen pastures for Fantasy and Satin. These mares stay there, they go in when they are 3 and stay till they age out (unless they get culled to show horses at some time or I start to run out of room.
My Appie and Chrome lines rotate each season. Foundation to Gen 6, this month was Appies, got them bred and then slipped in the Chrome mares. Gens higher than 6 get AI, my Bootstrapped get AI bred. My numbers are small so I'm able to do this.

I have two different Barns for Foundation stock (Which I'm going to have to cull again I see, as I'm outa room in one) One has the "Lp" foundation and the other has the "Chrome" foundation. My GMT horses have their own barn that they hang in.

I keep everything I breed. I am a small account and I've tried to stay this way so I can keep everything I breed. I have no need for an auction barn and all show stock goes straight into the Mondo Barns to do their magic. I have 8 Mondo Barns where the gelding/Spays go. I also put in those breeding stock that have hit their 20s and can't be bred anymore.

I did hit the Barn cap a little while ago so I had to do a major downgrade of Barns, but as a lot of them have a huge number of empty stalls it really didn't hurt that bad. Because of the up and down on the Barn numbers I tend to stick to using IVs to get them.
