Question for oldtimers
-
Ok, so you've got a nice little herd of mares going, and you put them all in a pasture and you breed them. You get a few fillies. They grow up, you put them in the pasture too.
Now you need more pasture. You're getting really nice horses but you don't just keep expanding.. how do you limit yourselves?
Thank you -
I limit myself by lack of space
If I know that I have only room this year for f.ex 30 horses from a generation/line, I keep the best/my favorite 30 horses and sell the rest.Thanked by 1Fiddler -
I've gotten extremely strict on my culling. (On Forest) I'm only allowing myself to keep 1 stallion and 3 mares from each generation over 2G.

Yup, lack of space forces culling. I started by getting super, picky on papering. Only 2nd gen blues and A, 4th gen star gold. I also cull colors or genes I don't want. I cull inconsistent. Sometimes I only keep a a best in pasture and the rest go to show. I send show horses to auction yearly to make room for new foals.Thanked by 1ConfluenceStable

:-S @-) :(( :(
but they're all so pretty!
thank you -
And they don't blab the secrets you tell them, and they don't eat all your ice cream while you're not looking and they don't climb up the christmas tree and knock it over...Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2023-12-25 17:39:35

1. I did a huge massive cull couple of months ago and got real strict with who stays intact. Must be Sup to sire/dam. Must be AGA to that Gen's Top Mare or Stallion. Must be consistent. I spend a lot on comparisons. Must have what that line is breeding for (eg. Fulminare must have snow or they are spayed/gelded) In doing this I culled myself into really low breeding numbers so I was able to downsize my barns. (which is good because I organize by barn. Each gen from each line has its own barn). I even breed (except for my boostrap and I just started those)
2. I only have 30 stall pastures. The Primary pasture is my only 100 stall. Way less breeding. Any other breeding past that 30 is done by AI. My pastures only go to 5th gen on some, so the higher gens are AI bred. IF I get a breeding that I just have to keep ... then maxing, boosting or any GMTing to fit is done. I very rarely boost, mostly max mine out.
3. My two main breeds Fulminare and Susurrus share pastures. I rotate them every month. That way everything is showing at some time. Same with the Foundations which go into the Primary. No spot Foundation rotate with the Spot Foundations.
4. I keep everything I breed. My show barns take up almost my whole barn allotment. If it shows it stays. They are put into the show barns and that is where they stay until they pass (or I have to make room)
5. I do some breeding outside of my barns, but very little. Other than my Futurity prospects, I don't stand any of my studs.
The hardest thing space wise is keeping the foundations ... but I limited the size of their barns so that I end up taking the oldest out and gelding/spaying and sending them to the show barn. Sometimes I'll auctionPost edited by Corvus at 2024-01-01 09:56:40 -
I forget about the game for half a year, then come back to play for a month or two. Then the changes mean I want to breed something new, and that's what I do. Then I can afford premium again: strict breeding advice neutered what feels like half of my lined ponies yesterday. TBH I'm not even used to using the pastures properly yet, and yes they've been part of the game for years.
I know I'm not competitive like that but then again, that wouldn't be fun for me.
Now, I think what does help is to think about the exact goals you have for a line and to freely neuter any pony that doesn't fit, instead of thinking 'but maybe they will have foals that match my goals for that line'?Thanked by 1Xzeina
