Chimeric Heritability Question
  • When breeding chimeric horses, does the possible set of genes a foal can inherit come from only one strand, or is there a 1/4 chance of getting certain genes, like E vs e?

  • Are you meaning if a foal can get genes from either strand on that same foal on a chimera parent? I want to say yes but also ive always edited the genes in the lab.
  • if its set for a 50% chance of inheritence from each chimeric parent , than yes the foal has a 25% chance of inheriting a specific gene ( you would do a double Punnett Square )

  • Whichever strand your foal inherits from, it can only get genes from that strand. As an example, say the first strand carries Tobiano and the second strand carries Appaloosa. If the foal inherits from the first strand, it can inherit Tobiano, but not Appaloosa. The only way to have genes from both strands on one foal is to edit them in the GMT lab.
