About as good as question
  • So I'm breeding era 16, and comparing the foals of two foundation mares, the dams both 9.9 and yellow..
One filly is red the other is yellow. Both are about as good as their mother. If a yellow is about as good as the red, why do ẁe cull the yellows? Just for fun I comp tested the files to each other and yes, they are aga each other

  • to me , if they dont paper "up" I dont even bother comp testing ; if i kept every foal who tested aga to parent , i would be drowning in foals ( I breed about 4500 a season ). I am not saying its "bad" or "good" am just saying its a way to keep my numbers down a bit. 2GMust paper up from parent ; 5g must be gold or star. I am not sure I would be able to get to 5g gold if i started with a 2g yellow.

  • @annismyrph, I only comp tested this time out of curiosity. I'm still very much learning.
But what you are saying makes sense. It is a good way to keep numbers down, for sure.
Just trying to figure stuff out

  • Also, a yellow foal from a yellow dam, who tests AGA could still be 1-2% worse than the dam. AGA could be both slightly better and slightly worse.

  • To add : I always think of AGA as something like : the ear set is better, but the knees are not as good or vice versa ; 1 thing is better than the parent 1 thing is worse than the parent.. am sure formula wise i am probably wrong, but thats how I like to think of it.

  • As Maribo says, I think "about as good as" means the two horses you are comparing have similar breeding ability within a certain range. So the foals are both very close to their mothers, but they could still be slightly better or worse and comp testing will say AGA. In the case of the red filly that is AGA her yellow mother, this filly obviously has better breeding ability (Red > Yellow) but isn't so far above her mother for the test to say "superior."
