Community Project - Let's create a guide to the gift exchange
-
I would love to build some information into the wiki about everything we can think of for the GE. We have a bit more than 2 weeks before the gift exchange opens for registrations so now seems like the perfect timing.
Can you help me come up with ideas about what we should cover? I want to make this as all-encompassing as possible.
Here are some topics I and the discord group came up with:
Etiquette: Follow the wishlists, ask if you don't understand, don't sell your gifts during the exchange. Don't give people their own lines etc.
Expectations: What is it like at each level, what it takes to move up in levels, what you are expected to spend, what it takes to qualify for participation.
Wishlists: How to make a good wishlist, how to read a wishlist. What not to ask for.
How to get help.
____
What suggestions do you have either for topics or more in-depth? I would also love to get a bunch of sample wish lists at different levels to have in the guide.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Make sure people understand that GMT work is expensive and sometimes that means One horse even slightly GMTed can put you "at" or Above" level 1 or 2 GE "spend level" IE : I almost always ask for BlueRoan Appaloosa Stallions.. if my level 1 gifter got me a BlueRoan GMTed from a Black.. that is over and above the 25k spend "suggestion". If they add Hom Snowflake, that puts them at a level 3 gift IMO ( 20 GMT's x 125k each = 2.5 million ). People tend to think they should be getting 20ish horses when in reality 7 fully tested horses is technically 25k for level 1. And yes, there have been several occasions when I did not receive a gift until the very last day of the exchange. Also Thanking the gifter is super important.. maybe not everyday or for each horse, but please remember to thank at least once during the exchange, not at the end; that way the gifdter knows you ve at least seen the gifts. I agree about the sale of the gifts.. there is nothing more hurtful than to go overboard on giving someone what they asked for to find out at the end of the exchange 90% of them had been auctioned off. If something happens during the exchange that you change your mind about what you need/want.. am sure Most if not all of the players would gladly purchase / change / make an effort to get you the new "wishlist"
-
On the flip side, getting a single gift and nothing else with limited communication also feels icky to most people. Even if the horse is expensive.
In general "communicate with your people" seems to be a big one. Low communication seems to cause the most issues. I think some times people send gifts and then don't communicate anything bout them so the recipient doesn't always understand what they were sent or why it is valuable.Need to contact me? I think from this there needs to be an explanation of HOW the auditors evaluate things, and what counts, what is tracked etc. Re: the above you aren't dinged if your recipient thinks you didn't give enough but the auditors can clearly tell you did. That's why you as the sender put in what you sent. So they know what to look for.
Another note: don't only shop your own barn. It looks low effort.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-10-29 00:30:38Need to contact me? Read this first.

Another thought when spending GMTs is the result is important too. If the GMT was a pointless spend like turning a 2500 hb black horse into a 2500 hb blue roan horse I don't think it's added 125,000 hbs worth of value to the gift. Spending 2.5 million in gmts to make a plain buckskin isn't giving a gift worth 2.5 million.
I guess we should specify that you should give gifts whose VALUE is the amount listed. Not necessarily what you spent because there is often a lot of confusion on that point for people. You might be given a horse worth a million hbs to gift and that value is what counts more than the hbs you did not spend.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-10-29 02:14:25Need to contact me? I respectfully disagree.. if a level 1 gifter makes me a blueroan Appy from a black appy.. and that is what is on my wishlist.. they certainly put thought and effort into following what I asked for.. and if making a "regular" Appy into a HOM Snowflake appy is on my wishlist at level 2.. I again I feel they have put the effort into getting me what I want... Exceptional BlueRoan Appies are next to impossible to create ( I know I ve been doing it for about 4 and a 1/2 years now ) and creating a HOM Snowflake BlueRoan Appy is never gonna happen. Anything else given by that gifter to me is above and beyond. I dont just look at whats sent, I look at what I asked for , and if they made an effort to get close. I stalk Foundation Rescue to find horses close to what the giftee is looking for and then use GMT's to get them as close to perfect for the gift, please dont suggest I am not gifting "well enough" or "high enough".. Poeple ask for what they want / need, its up to the gifter to get it for them.. at level 1 or 2 there are "no expectations" of cash purchases.. welp GMT's ARE cash purchases, wether saving for them from IV's or using actual money to purchase them. I hoard to the best of my ability GMT's from one gift exchange to another to ensure I can give the "big" gift for that "over the moon" wish.Thanked by 1amber

Thought and effort very much count. We are agreeing completely on that point.

The number one thing the auditors look at is thought and effort. Not how much was spent.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Also , I find "stalking" the giftee's barn is a lot of help.. if you notice something like their main stallion is aging out.. you can send a note to them through the portal now to ask if they are changing a goal or if they need/want a replacement Boy.. sometines you just forget until you open the pasture and Poof no more Daddy horse! There are things an outside eye looking in catches sometimes when you are so busy cleaning your stalls and checking tack lolThanked by 1cinnabae

Something that gets gifted on occasion that costs no game money but counts HUGE on thought and effort when people have made art assets for their recipient. That could be forum banners and avatars, stable headers, art of their best stallion, etc. Other things include tacking up the gift horses and adding cute names and notes.
Again no cost, but big pay off!
My point above is that thoughtless spending is not something that tends to be desirable. Thoughtful spending (and even not spending) always is appreciated.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Just out of curiosity, how many Auditors are there ? Are they different for each server or the same? Are any Players included? @Ammit

It can very from year to year. I avoid having players involved.

Something I've noticed that always counts as an extra nice touch, is to add notes as Ammit says. I've also changed names and sent horses at specific times to send a message, sometimes just a pick me up if I've noticed by forum posts that the recipient is having a hard time, sometimes just a fun message to get the holiday spirit jumping. Opening a barn and seeing a message on a new horse has always excited me no end so I try to pass that on, be it in the horses name or in their owner notes. Dont feel like you personally have to come up with a special message for each horse either. Give credit when available, but songs and poems are special touches that can be added to the owners notes, either themed based such as the holiday/summer or something that matches the name you give the horse. Covering a horse with a sheet can also feel like opening a present on Christmas morning so I tend to do that as well.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2024-10-29 08:52:13

on a recent exchange, I did a lot of research to find some rare genes from people that almost never play the game (as a result i had to wait for days for a response) and i produced a couple of horses that my recipient said they wanted/bred but there was almost no response after they got them. I was disappointed. I try to get into the spirit of the thing, but it's pretty hard. I like RAOG because there's no sting.

Don’t be afraid to reach out on the forum for help. (Don’t give too many details or risk giving away who your giftee is) I know the first time I entered I was really worried I wouldn’t be able to come up with / afford cool enough gifts. Many members are willing to help.
Stash away herd helper creates leading up to the GE they will almost certainly come in handy, or you could help out someone else looking for that perfect gift. Candy ponies also make excellent gifts.
I think dressing up the horses is such a great touch.
I tried to give one gift each day, it just seems like it would be like Xmas morning every day lol and save the best/biggest gift for the last day
Agree about communication
Try to be specific and helpful in the wishlist , it’s tough shopping for folks who “will be happy with anything” - just like the hubby who doesn’t need anything for Xmas lol

Please pay atention to what the suggested amount to be spent is.
Don't list millions hb worth of things including a bunch of real money items if you're not level 3.
Don't limit your wishlist. Nothing but special genes on horses doesn't leave much for your gifter to do if they can't afford real money.
Answer your gifter's messages.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2024-10-30 01:37:13 -

Another thing to keep in mind would be the current exchange rate. While this is an older server and a lot of people go over the giving limit, some people still don't have the capability to pay out a lot of hbs for someone else to buy money items.
-
Use the search engine to find a horse that might be perfect for your recipient, and then contact the owner of the horse privately to see if they are willing to sell the horse, or to do straws/eggs for Gift Exchange. They may regretfully decline for a number of reasons, but I can guarantee they will be flattered to be asked.
-
This might have already been covered, but in terms of wishlists; be very specific, especially when it's for breeding stock. Not just in color; but in PT scores, paper levels, consistency, whether you would like the horse to be an even generation or not, if you like strict breeding advice done, if you want them to be superior tested, and what you prefer for the generation you're asking for. When it comes to foundation horses; are there Herd Helpers that the giftee particularly dislikes and doesn't want, and what are their favorite Herd Helpers? I know some people don't care about this, but there are others that do, and a horse that meets their requirements is more likely to be used as breeding stock.Post edited by Sunshine at 2024-10-30 08:36:11

Pay attention to people's hard lines on things -for instance, if someone doesn't use unevenly bred horses at all, it doesn't matter how close to their request that horse is. A horse doesn't have to match every detail, but if it has a deal breaker then they probably won't use it. And also, especially if gifting a more advanced member, don't feel bad if you don't meet EVERY point on their request - a horse that is close that they can GMT a bit further is still nice to have and saves a lot of money/GMTs
Don't be afraid to ask for help - most people, especially bigger barns will be more than happy to work with your price points to get a special gift and offer cheap straws & eggs.
Be specific and give options, and don't think you have to buy EVERYTHING on someone's wishlist, some people list a lot of things to give you room to shop, not because they expect everything they mention.
Be specific and I really like when someone asks for a "special" item that can be the big gift at the end. Not that a big gift is required, but it's fun to save something special for the final.
If eras, evenly bred horses or specific generations/paper/PT levels matter to you, list these and also if you're gifted lists these pay attention to them.
If you're level 3 in particular ask for something extravagant and fancy so I can have fun creating it LOL
If you want something really rare in the game, don't be afraid to ask but also give other options in case it's just not findable
If you're confused about a request, ask an older member through a message. People are usually super helpful and friendly.
And again, be specific and give details in your requests! And note if you use straws, eggs, embryos or if you prefer not to get them.
Also, I can't imagine how sad it would be if someone sold gifted horses right away. Don't do that. If they just don't fit you can always keep them as shown horses. Also don't be offended if someone adds some GMTs to a gift horse to make it even more perfect for them.Starstruck2 on Bluegrass and Forest

I wanted to highlight the search feature on the game for shopping. I use the search feature to find horses (even if not for sale) and I message owners. I feel like most game members are more than willing to help out for the GE and sell horses that aren't otherwise up for public sale.
I also do this to find stallions and mares, so I can ask for straws and eggs. I can often breed a few foals that meet (or need a couple GMT fixes) that are ideal for my giftees wishlist.
I stalk their forum posts to get an idea of what they like. If you click on a member's name, you can see posts they comment on. -
What @Humboldt 110%, specially now that we can buy publicly listed straws and eggs, and they don't reset on the 1st like our Stallions standing for stud.

Taking a break from this for now. I have started working on the guide. It is set up so people can leave comments on the document.

I could use some help coming up with a list of these that are appropriate to ask for by level.
What's OK to ask for at Level 1 versus 2? Obviously, anything goes at 3 but the line between 1 and 2 is less clear.

For level 1 ; No GMT work can be asked for or expected, also when making the "wish " list as a Giftee... please dont put down your "super Perfect" horse requirements and then state... I dont expect that from my level 1 gifter.. most of us will attempt to get that horse done for you lol , even at level 1.
For Level2; I think its OK to ask for a horse that needs 1 or 2 GMT's to get to where the giftee wants them..And even if its only a coat color change, it matters to the person recieving the horse.. going from a Black Tobiano to a BlueRoan Tobiano is super important for my Fantasy lines, so to me its worth the cost of the GMT to get it there, and I count it towards the cost of the gifts.Thanked by 1Ammit -

I don't know how to report a typoHow to qualify for other levels
Level 2: As long as you don’t totally whiff it at level 1 (don’t worry you will have lots of help) you will qualify for level 2. Level 2 is the main body of the exchange and where most members participate. To qualify for level 2 you need to have: 1) Successfully participated at level 1, 2)
I think the 2 isn't supposed to be there? -
