Favorite Horse Shows/Events
-
Hey all! Friendly question: what are everyone's favorite horse events to attend? If you haven't had the opportunity to attend any live horse events yet, which ones would you like to attend?
I'll start. My favorite local(ish) horse event is the Washington State Horse Expo! It's like Comicon for horse people, and I've loved it every year that I've gone. I especially love the Breed Showcases and mounted archery exhibition. This year is the first year that I'll be able to go to the Saturday Night Extravaganza, and I'm super excited! This is also the first year that some of my friends will be able to go with me, so I'm looking forward to sharing the experience with them.Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

To attend/watch I absolutely love bronc riding, In the world of rodeo it’s definitely my favorite to watch. I also love watch cross country. I’ve never gotten the chance to witness it is person but hopefully one day.
As for participation I’ve dabbled in barrel racing and won a few buckles but it’s not really something me or my horses enjoy anymore. I’d much rather trail ride. I’m attending an EXCA clinic in March so fingers crossed my horses like it and we can take a swing in the obstacle world! -
@Blaze5115 that's awesome! I've never competed, but I love running the barrels with a horse that's into it, almost as fun as racing on the beach!Post edited by MackZ at 2022-02-03 23:23:32

I actually enjoy showing model horses! I attend the online shows haha & for real horse events, I like going to the fairs!
-
Deerfield Fair in New Hampshire. There is a horse show, horse pulls, livestock shows, 4H/FFA presentations, lots of shopping, and Fair food.
-
Trail classes, obstacle classes, etc. My #1 bucket list is to go to Washington to the Bolender Horse Park or the Oregon Horse Center.
I've been to a couple state fairs, and absolutley loved their draft horse classes!Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)

@NorthernLightsStables that's awesome! I've always wanted to go to BreyerFest, but I've never been able to. Maybe I'll try this year. :)
@Humboldt that sounds really fun! We have a state fair, but yours sounds like it has a lot more horse stuff involved.Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

@Johara I love trail and obstacle classes! I love how creative people can get with it. And draft horses are definitely some of my favorites; I love a big horse!

I. Am. PINING. For Midwest Horse Fair. It's been cancelled for 2 years because of covid and it finally looks like it's on for this April. The group I go with is talking about going down for 2 days, I live about 2 hours from the fair and I am so willing to drive down twice lol I've gone every year since I was a teen and I have hardly gotten through the last couple of years without it!
They pack a giant convention center with vendors, line a parking lot with food trucks and horse trailers for sale, fill all of the barns with horses, have the colosseum running clinics, showcases, events, from 8am to 10pm for 3 days, on top of 3 other arenas with events every day.
If we go 2 days this year I plan on spending the first day (or second, it'll depend on the programming) walking around to all of the vendors and shops and all of the barns to see all of the ponies, then the second day I plan on sitting my fat butt down in the colosseum and only moving for fried food and beer. -
@ichigo that sounds like a lot of fun!
-
@MackZ I've only been to the online BreyerFest (last year)! This year it's hybrid so both in person and online! I won't be attending but it's about Germany this year! I show online on OMHPS & some Facebook Groups xx
-
@NorthernLightsStables very cool! Do you have a favorite model or category?
-
@MackZ I'm in love with Spanish Jennets & Peruvian Pasos xx I prefer halter classes as performance is super complicated lol
-
Someday I'll just like to be able to go to Tampa Bay Downs for a day of racing and just watch. I would love to be able to attend the Kentucky Derby, though.
-
@NorthernLightsStables awesome! And I can definitely understand the class preference...Performance is really cool to look at, but I'm not imaginative enough to enter.
@Forestshadow nice! I've always wanted to watch the Derby in person too. -
@MackZ I came here to say the Washington state horse expo too! If you are in the more northern part of Wa I can put you in contact with Katie if you are interested in mounted archery. I'm part of the Broken Arrow Mounted Archers. (I was riding Areté the little half Arabian mare in the club demo!)
-
Oh cool, that means I saw you! I'm actually from the Oregon Coast(Lincoln County, to be exact), but it was fun to meet Katie and Alysse. And the extravaganza was so worth it! I will definitely be doing that again!
-
When i was younger i showed hunters. I also like watching eventing, dressage, and British native pony (which i have to find online, because i don't live there).
We have the PA national horse show pretty nearby and at the same complex they do a farm show that exhibits all types of animals but has a mini rodeo and draft harness classes. I have only gone to the national horse show twice and the farm show twice, but they were great every time! -
I loved going into new york to the garden to see the national horse show the jumpers and every year I would enter the raffle to win the Arabian sadly not to be. Also would go there to see the rodeo. The bull riders were just amazing to me as a child.
Scottsdale Arabian horse show I would say is up on the list of my all-time favorite horse shows to go to. Just to see the versatility of that breed was totally amazing. To meet the people who show them who love them. Not to mention the very large vendor Booth which was always my favorite to go shop at.273933

I have to say the Scottsdale Arabian Show. Grew up going and am now part of what makes it happen. Many years ago I was part of the crew that originated the Western States Wild Horse and Burro Expo up in Reno, NV.
While living in Vegas I was able to attend World Cup Dressage and Show Jumping, to be able to see horses in person that I usually only saw in magazines or online!
Really anything with horses works for me. -
@Wldmstnglvr those all sound amazing!
-
A little bit of an update on how the EXCA clinic went, my mare absolutely loved it! We had the best time. I’ve also recently (in the last few days) acquired a big beautiful grey gelding that I’ll be training and running on barrels for awhile for a friend of mine
@johara the Oregon horse park is number one on my bucket list too! However I live in Oklahoma which is a whooping 27 hours from the park. Ive considered taking a month or so in a few years and traveling up there and stopping a bunch along the way to trail ride all overPost edited by Blaze5115 at 2022-03-20 09:14:28 -
If you can make that happen, absolutely do it! There is a lot of beautiful country to ride through in between!Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)

@Blaze5115 that's awesome! I love running barrels on a horse that enjoys them!
When you do come to Oregon, definitely stop in Pacific City at the Bob Straub State Park - it's a great area with lots of riding trails through the wooded park leading out onto the beach. And the dunes are a lot of fun to ride on too. -
@MackZ I added it to my running list haha!
-
Some of my favorites are Liverpool International Horse show, Madison Square Garden, Belmont Stakes, Badminton and Hickstead. I love watching super scopey jumpers.ID# 274513Thanked by 1MackZ

I absolutely love Nutrien Campdraft! It's so cool to see what I will be doing soon!Thanked by 1MackZ
-
@RG1234 - that is so cool! I had never heard of the event before, so I just looked it up. That looks like so much fun!
-
@MackZ - yeah, campdrafting is super fun! Stockmans challenge is too :D
-
Endurance. I have a few hundred miles on the trails in the Sierra mountains. I'ved moved to the midwest now. I am getting me and my horse ready to hit the trails in the Ozarks nowThanked by 1MackZ
-
Nice! I've always been interested in endurance events, but never had the opportunity to do any.
-
I've always loved watching Cross Country and Cutting. On my list of events to attend are Congress/World level shows, Kentucky Derby and to visit the new facility (World Equestrian Center) in FL.Thanked by 1MackZ
-
I volunteered at the Kentucky Three Day Event this year and I loved it. I had to miss Cross Country day cause our local AHA club puts on a spring horse show the same Saturday as Rolex (or Land Rover or whatever) every year, and I work at an Arab show barn. I was definitely disappointed, but I worked Stadium day and it was incredible to see the 5*.
I live about an hour from the Kentucky Horse Park and I love being there no matter what's going on. I also volunteered at Breyerfest this year and while I wouldn't pay to get in, it was really fun to walk around after my volunteer shift.
Equitana is a newer event that's kind of similar to Equine Affaire, and they had a lot of really neat demos last year. I'll probably attend this year again.Formerly OscarWildin

Look up the American Horseman Challenge! By far my favorite event. It is like extreme obstacle challenges. I competed in the Michigan affiliation this summer and now I am prepping to compete in Nationals in October in Sedalia, Missouri. It is so much fun! It's challenging and fun and a great way to train and desensitize horses of all ages :x I have videos of my rides this summer on my mare's facebook page:

My favorite horse event to attend, is a local one to western New York! It's called Western New York Equifest, and it's filled with tables and booths for all number of things, and there's vendors selling various items, breed presentations, sometimes there's clinics, there's presentations on everything from rescues, to driving, to trick riding, to liberty and Sidesaddle! My favorite part is that it's completely free to attend, and parking is free as wellThanked by 1MackZ
-
A show that I would love to attend and show at The Georgetown Charity Horse show in the sidesaddle divisions, and the all around. If you win the evening classes, you get your name in lights on the board!Thanked by 1MackZ
-
That sounds awesome! I've never ridden sidesaddle, but I've seen some pretty impressive ladies doing so in a small exhibition.
-
Hickstead and the Dublin Horse Show are my top two "someday" picks. Both feature some amazing show jumping competitions to watch, and Dublin holds all sort of breed competitions.
A non-horse related show would be the Great Yorkshire Show, which has all sorts of amazing livestock breed competitions.Thanked by 1MackZ -
Nice! I enjoy breed shows as well.
-
I got really into mounted games for about 5 years until I ruptured my ankle after getting tossed off a horse that I went to buy (in the horse’s defense she had a tooth growing out near her poll that not a soul knew about until after she tossed me). Then Covid hit and I haven’t been able to get back into it yet. I’m hoping more stuff starts popping up in my area since it was so much fun!Thanked by 1MackZ
-
Mounted games look like loads of fun! Do you have a favorite part?
-
A very long time ago, when I was a pony-mad girl, my grandmother used to take me to the Horse of the Year Show in Wembley (London) every year. We lived in South London, which is short on real horses, but I used to read pony books and watch show jumping on TV. The old Wembley arena was indoors, and quite small, and the atmosphere when the show jumping classes were on and horses were against the clock, was terrific. When I got older I went a few times by myself but life took over, and eventually the event moved to Birmingham.
I have also been to Hickstead, which is an amazing show jumping ground fairly near where I live now, but I haven't been to any horse events for a long time, nor have I ever participated in any.Thanked by 1MackZ -
That sounds like a wonderful memory of fun times! I'm sure your grandmother treasured those times as well.
-
MackZ I think my favorite part was some of the more technical games, not where you had to necessarily be fast but where you had to be accurate. I think one of my favorites was the association game where it’s stacking items on a barrel. It was always fun to see which team was going to knock it over.Thanked by 1MackZ

I have been fortunate enough to have horses most of my life, giving me the opportunity to explore several disciplines. I started out as a barrel racer/pole bending, dabbled a little in western pleasure, did some breezing on race horses, then lots of trail riding, dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping (not the best at it), and also a little combined driving. I have enjoyed them all.Thanked by 1MackZ

That's amazing!
