What Color Is This Girl?
  • I had a filly born on the 7th and I was wondering what color she is. My 1st thought was black but now I really don't know. What do you think?

I'll be getting some new photos of her soon.

  • I think "cute" is her color :P
  • I would say black bay. There is a horse on the property where we are, a dutch warm blood, her papers say black bay and she looks about the same color as the foal. I had never heard of black bay until we moved here, so that's all I have . :P
  • I would guess a seal brown, but boy was she born dark! What color are her parents?
  • Her mother is a Dark Bay/Brown and her father is..... ether a Buckskin or a Perlino(That's why I was wondering what you all thought her color was). The mother got into the Buckskins paddock for about 2 days and a month later I put her in with my Perlino stallion.

  • Certainly worth a cream test, my first though is black (w or wo cream) but she does have that bit of brownish muzzle. If brown certainly the darkest one I've seen born!

  • She is absolutely adorable.
  • She has some really cool eyes! I am betting she has a little creme in there, but I couldn't guess the color because they change too much after they shed that baby fuzz. I agree with Blue Meadow though, she is colored CUTE! Like Super cute!
  • Oh wow! I am with Blue Meadow as well on this one! She's precious! I'd have to say brown as well. Maybe an uber dark buckskin. Such a sweet face! I peg her to be a super sweetheart of a filly.

  • Thanks every one! I think she will be a sweet heart too. Her mother was saved from the 2009/10 drought (Brumby) as a foal. This is her 1st and only foal as she did not do to well with the pregnancy.

    My girl today :D

A close up to see her color.

  • The first of the new pictures sealed it for me. I can see where the brown meets the black on the legs. By the way, I love the Heart on her forehead!

  • Is your Perlino grey at all? I was just wondering because she was so black - though no googles.
    Thanked by 1Kintara
  • She is gorgeous. Congrats :)
  • My Perlino is gene tested as Ee AA CcrCcr dD Gg and I have no idea what the buckskins genetics are.

  • I would suspect you have a buckskin/brown cream grey then. :)
  • Yep this foal is gray for sure. That would make him the sire then. So you know this foal MUST be a gray dark buckskin. The gray gene is why this foal is so much darker then you would expect.

  • So do all gray turn into the fleabitten eventually, or could some keep their pigment throughout their life? How cool to keep the color on a buckskin that dark!
  • All grays will gray. Some slower than others, but none will ever stay this dark for any length of time. That extra-dark look is because the gray gene is making the color over produce, which burns out the stuff that makes the color in the hair. Once that happens, that hair goes gray.

(I forget all the technical words, lol, but that's the outline of the process.)
  • Oh yes grey for sure I reckon, I was going to ask if grey was possible, gorgeous girl though!

  • I think she'll be a buckskin.
  • Does she have a name yet? Besides Cutie Pie, I mean. :P

  • Almost but actually it keeps producing color, but the cells the actually hold the color get so full they explode. The extra pigment is a carcinogen hence why so many grays have tumors.

  • That's fascinating, Ammit! Thanks for explaining that phenomenon..

  • Thanks. The information is helping me understand gray better.

Her name? Well I have 2 horse crazy nieces and they think Flicker would be good as they think she is black. I'm still thinking on a name for her myself. Any ideas?
    Golden Spur - 177528

    image

  • Ah, but the original Flicker, in the book was a flaxen sorrel (chestnut).

She really is a cutie pie, but sitting here looking at her pictures, the name that came to me was "Sprite"
As I imagine her as being "spirited and lively", as this Wikipedia dictionary link states. Also, she is just a cute little critter! :D

  • How about something related to the heart on her forehead?

  • I'd avoid a color name until she's out of the foal coat. ;)

  • Miss Prissy I think :) For the way she looks down her nose at you.

  • Well...if she's going to be the only foal out of this mare, how about Unique? You could use something like Neeka for a nickname.
  • The most recent photos seem to show her with gray goggles, I think she is a dark buckskin that will gray out.

My holsteiner mare was born the same colour and has gradually grayed out.
