This season, I have noticed alot of people breeding horses and the lines being un-even. Breeding 2nd gen with foundations, etc. I've been having alot of my mares set for public breeding this season and I have had several people do it now where they breed and the lines are not even. (Which I personally am not a fan of.) I am just wondering how many people strive for an even lineage? Or does it not matter to you?

Sorry for the random post, just looking for some input.

For the most part I aim for even lines. Foundation x foundation, 2nd gen x 2nd gen, etc.

However.

I have a whole bunch of 6th (or was it 7th?) gen horses that are one step higher on the dam line (so 6th gen sire, 7th gen dam) because of a tough quality lag. The boys were so much better than the girls that I literally had zero stallions to use. I can't come down really hard on people who are trying to match even quality, and sometimes shifting a generation on one side is the way to go with that (foundation x foundation mares against an exceptional foundation stallion).

I'm less of a fan of breeding 7th, 8th, 15th gen horses with foundations, but some people do go that route too, for whatever reason.

But at the end of the day, if you put your mares up for public brood, they're up for anybody to use. You don't really have to look at the resulting foal. :)

A lot of breeding on HJ2 is un-even lines, it even seems encouraged, and there is quite a few of those come to HJ1 now, plus more new players here now too which might be why you are seeing more non generation breeding.

I breed even, even in high generations, mostly as it gives me benchmarks to strive for in each generation, or at least easier to do so anyway. Some players prefer to get intact foals so try and breed similar quality I think too, rather than even generations

I love even pedigrees and won't buy an intact horse with uneven lines. Mostly it is an aesthetic thing for me - it just looks nicer, but when breeding for intact horses, you want to keep your quality the same on both the sire and the dam's side and I find it easier to keep track of quality with even pedigrees.

On the flip side, you can really produce some great spays/geldings for showing when you breed high pt/gen horses to foundations. Uneven pedigree doesn't mean uneven quality. For example - Sometimes you produce a great mare or stallion that fits all the criteria you want for your lines, stays intact and would otherwise be the pride of your barn but they just didn't paper well. Lets it is a c papered colt as good as his sire who is a c papered foundation stud. Technically, that 2g boy is like a foundation, so breeding him to foundation/yellow mares would be breeding even quality.

There is much variation and many ways to play this game which is what makes it so wonderful!

I personally don't care for uneven lines. I won't buy horses that don't have balanced pedigrees. I pasture breed, but I make sure that each generation I have has their own pasture. And yeah, breeding even lines makes it easier to keep track of quality.

I'm not picky on lines. The ones that I keep even are my special genes (mushroom, axiom, chinchilla). I won't breed 7th gens with foundations, but will breed second gens with foundations. I breed for color more than anything else, so if i have two horses that would make nice colors, that's what I'll do. Judge me all your want, lol!!

I enjoy that this game can be played however anyone wants as long as they aren’t scamming other players.

That being said I’ve been around forever and a day and it’s pretty much drilled into my soul to breed evenly and through the years I’ve found that it striving for even, similarly coloured lines of horses make me the happiest and most of my uneven lines are oops babies (which don’t happen often with my naming system) or I’ve picked up from other players to try to increase my numbers but they all often just end up altering them.

I find that the uneven horses usually don’t have as good of quality as my lined horses with a similar number of full generations behind it (I usually pair with the same generation the low end has) so unless I continue to breed uneven by another generation or two uneven lines aren’t helping boost my lines.

I breed evenly as well. It bothers me to see a pedigree that isn't even in my barns, personally.

I did use to have a "long term project" with a stallion that I had picked up off public sales or auction, I can't remember which, and he was uneven by 1 generation, I think it was 3rd gen x 2nd gen, and he was papered Star. I had picked him up because he had a gene at that time that I didn't have. I think it was hmm, maybe white 4 back then. I don't know, it's been quite a while. I bred him to 3rd generation mares because that was his lower generation, pedigree wise. Regardless to say, his lines haven't existed in my barn for a long time now. When the papering system for stallions and mares got changed, none of his line made the cut.

So yeah, uneven pedigrees do hurt quality wise now since papering compares a foal to both sire and dam.

But yeah, this is a game, people can do what they want. I just won't buy uneven again.

Thanks for all of the input everyone! Its really interesting to see peoples opinions on the topic. I still think I'll stick with my even lines, but I did breed a few un-evens to see what the result would be, which in my case has been all show ponies with bling! lol.
