Breeding
-
Okay, I'm new and I have no clue how the whole breeding thing works...Can anyone help me figure it out? Thank you!

It is no longer breeding season now. In H&J1 the new years begin in January, March, May, July, September and November. Administrators begin breeding on the 1st of the month to check for bugs. Upgraded members are assigned start times on the 2nd. Everyone else may begin breeding on the 3rd. The breeding season ends at the midnight roll-over between the 27th and 28th of the month.
Either the stallion or the mare must be placed for public breeding in order for mating to take place. Even if you don't have any stallions of your own, you can find many stallions up for public stud, many of them for very reasonable prices. Or you can have a stallion or two of your own to breed.
Once breeding season starts, a box will appear on a breedable horse's control panel that lets you set the stud fee for a stallion or the brood mare fee for a mare. A default amount is entered, but that can be changed to whatever you wish.
Once the breeding fee has been set, a "Breed to this horse" button will appear on the horse's main page. Click the button. After a fairly short time, a box will appear at the top of the page. There will be a drop down box with the names of all your breedable horses of the opposite gender on the left. Select the one you want to breed to. Enter a name in the box on the right. Click the button to breed the two together. The new foal will appear almost instantly.
If you do not get a foal and there is no message saying that the foal died because it received two homozygous lethal genes, it means that there is probably another horse in the game with the name you chose. Reselect the horse you want from the drop down box, enter a new name, and try again.
Your game account will be charged the breeding fee plus a 1000 hb vet fee for the breeding. The breeding fee for your own horse never actually leaves your account, of course, but you still have to have enough hb's to cover that expense.
There is no game rule against breeding horses of different generations together, BUT the game culture strongly favors breeding only horses of the same generation. If you want to sell any of your foals, you will have better luck if you keep this custom in mind. It does, generally speaking, lead to more favorable outcomes--better horses with each generation, slightly fewer neutered offspring, and so on. Breeding horses with approximately similar ability (for breeding, not showing) generally tends to have the best results. -
Thank you. How old do they have to be to breed? And does the pasture have anything to do with breeding?Post edited by Stonebridge at 2014-12-31 12:27:20

Mares have to be at least 4 and stallions at least 3 to breed. Both are too old to breed at 20. The pasture is used for automatic breeding of multiple mares. Here is the link to Ammit's announcement when she added them to the game:

Mares must be 4 years old and stallions at least 3 to be bred.
