Breeding ratios
  • My pastures just bred so I pulled the foals and stuck them in a barn to test and sort. Thought to look at the ratios after I SBA’d the herd and before I went through hand snipping.

    900 foals:

    Spayed mares - 310
    Geldings - 317
    Mares - 138
    Studs - 135

118 were embryos, mostly altered I think I have 1 mare and 4 colts? And I still have some more embryos in the freezer I haven’t implanted yet.

  • Seems like a reasonable rate before hand culling. I have been getting super spay/geld happy with my last few breeding seasons and I am still overrun with horses! I think I need a strict strict breeding advice LOL

  • No, we need mare comparison :x I can't wait to go on an insane snip-trip when it becomes available 8->

  • Lol yes!

I tend to be heavy handed when I snip (I actually enjoy it and it will brighten even the worst moods) and rarely get ratios before I’ve already hand snipped a bunch. September I went a bit crazy on my studs and took them from around or above 200 down to under 40 over 7-8 generations. Haven’t really paired down the 2 year olds much so still have 13ish. I’m going to repost my numbers after I finish hand culling the inconsistent and non grullos.

  • After culling for inconsistency

    Mares - 106
    Stud - 99
    Gelding - 353
    Spay - 341

Have culled the non-grullos. Happy that my recent cull on my studs has reduced the non grullo numbers down to less than 1 page and about 1/3 of those were just homo nexus or axiom horses. Now working through my studs foals and comparison testing to reduce the boys further.

  • Mares - 77
    Stud - 16
    Gelding - 436
    Spay - 370

Finished hand snipping and moving everyone to their appropriate barns.

The studs will probably get trimmed down more throughout their lives as brothers with better genetics replace them or others of the same generation have more to offer.

  • My older studs that are lined often get replaced by half brothers that have better genetics or paper higher.
  • Yep I kicked 2 studs out of the pastures for half brothers that had more homo genetics. One was a het kp replaced by homo kp. And the other may have been nexus

  • I replaced a 2nd gen sup to sire B stallion that still fit my breeding program with a younger half brother that papered A. He was not so pretty, but he papered A, so he had better breeding quality.
  • Nice. I typically go through each of my studs colts and only keep the top papers. My mares are a little bit slacker and keep top 2 papers but I think I’m reaching the point I can start going through the lower generations and snip the lower producing ones to make room for newer mares.

My barns are looking much nicer than they did this time last year. In November when I did my massive reorganization I was lucky to scrape together 5-30 mares in any generation now I have 3 pastures set aside for foundations and 2 pastures each for the next 3 generations.

Which reminds me I need to shuffle the 2nd gens around because there’s still some 3year old mares in the barns

  • I'm getting to the point where I can afford to have only blues for 3rd gen mares. At 3rd gen, I require my boys to be papered A, since I breed from normal foundation stock (C/Yellow) for the most part.
