We're Moving!
  • So our poor server is several years old and badly in need of an upgrade. We have been working with our hosting company to come up with a plan and it was decided the best option was a totally brand new server. This is great because we will have faster processors 6 times the ram, beefier data connection ports, faster hard drives and much much more. We are getting the works and the server is going to hum with all these updates.

    Here is the bad news. This does mean we will be preforming a migration. Have you ever purchased a new computer and then had to move all your files from the old system to the new one? Think that but like 100x more of a PITA. We will be doing everything in our power come migration time to limit down time but there WILL be some downtime. As we get a better idea when that will happen I will keep you all in the loop but it will probably be at short notice and may be up to a full day.

    After the trouble we can look forward to a much more stable and pleasant server experience.

  • Thanks for the heads-up. Knowing that the result of the necessary downtime will be better for the game and all its players in the long-run will make it easier to endure the temporary withdrawal symptoms.

  • We just heard from our server provider. We should have the new server in "our hands" tomorrow. Should be able to migrate a few days after we receive it.

  • So update. We had been having issues with IP addresses and that is delaying work. We keep having to stop dead while we work with the network team. Pushing back the estimate to Friday or Saturday.

  • I'd just like to say, Ammit, that I'm getting considerably faster responses from the new server much more consistenty, too. Thanks to you and Haystack for using the time, taking the trouble, and doing the odd clean-up work that has resulted.

  • Going to third that one - the site is MUCH faster. So I really appreciate the investment in both money and time you and Hay have put in. Bugs/crashes or not, the entire game is going to benefit (at least for a couple more years til it is time for another upgrade...LOL).
  • So, crashes. After a couple of days pulling our hair out, we've just isolated the problem down to a particular type of query that the server's updated database software chokes on. From all appearances, it's due to a weird bug in the database software.

    The problem queries are in multiple, kind of random places in the codebase that ran at weird times, so it wasn't immediately obvious what was causing the issue.

    So, now that we know for certain what's up, we should be able to pursue some options for fixing the core problem. There might be a bit of downtime today while I back up databases/debug stuff/upgrade stuff, and we could experience random downtimes if we missed turning off one of the bad queries anywhere.
