Too Much Snow!
-
So, I live near Boston, and for the last couple of days, have been out of work because of the blizzard. So I tried to get out of my house this morning to take the train to work, as I usually do after it snows, because I don't like driving in snow. Couldn't hardly get out of my house. The top of the porch wasn't too bad, though there was a bit of a snow drift to push out of the way of the door when I opened it. The amount of snow really hit me though when I got down to the last step, and found myself in over hip deep snow. So I'm going to have to take another day off, just to be able to get myself out of my house. Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Yikes! We've had storms like that where I am, though it's been a good many years since there's been one. The one I remember most, the snowplow drifts in front of our yard after the storm was done were about shoulder high. I had to go out periodically during the storm to shovel off the front landing and down the steps and the pad at the bottom, just so we would be able to open the door at all. If I hadn't we probably would have been penned in.
You have my sympathy. I hope you get shoveled out okay and are able to get to work without a lot more delay. -
All is good now. Path from house to parking lot has been achieved, and I'll be heading to work tomorrow on the train.
I've lived in Boston since 1980, and while we have had some major storms and lots of snow piled up, usually its from several different storms, one following another, and you would have time to clean things up before the next one hit, but this came all in one storm, which is the first time I've seen it like this since I've lived here. I think I will soon have to invest in a snow blower, if this keeps up, lol.Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

I'm in the UK and heard about your storms on the radio. We've got heavy snowfall in the north and Scotland right now and the forecast says its heading down south so guessing I'll get some soon. Nothing like what you guys have though.
Hope you're all safe and warm -
I have good friends your way and I feel you pain. My husband works in western Mass, we live in eastern NY. Storm #2 was today and another storm coming on Sunday. *sigh* we are suposed to get a new puppy next weekend from down south... It may not be possible or fair to all parties involved with this wicked winter.Post edited by Visions at 2015-01-31 12:49:12

So far this storm today has been easy here, hardly any accumulations, though it is supposed to continue tonight til tomorrow morning, and yeah, I just heard about the next storm to come Sunday/Monday, I can only hope it blows by fast, as I have missed enough work already this past week, and I need the money because I'm getting a new car soon. Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Ok, so I've had another day off of work due to snow, and I thought I would be able to get to work tomorrow, on the MBTA rail, and I find out a few moments ago, that the entire MBTA, except for a few bus lines (which I am no where near) will be closed down tomorrow. So I called my boss to let her know.
I get another day off tomorrow, because of that, and it's at a bad time, as this weekend is Valentines Day, and we work in the floral department of a Whole Foods Market.
I'm getting worried that we will not be able to prep all the stuff we will get, or because of the weather, get stuck with a lot of left over stuff, as we are supposed to get even more snow on Thursday, and this weekend is supposed to be extreemly cold, so no melting.
So I also found out that we have had more snow now with this latest storm, that it beat the Snowsorm of 1978. They got 59 inches that year, and so far, we have gotten over 61 inches, and like I said, more is comming. UGH! It's hard enough trying to shovel out now as it is, as the mounds are higher than I can throw the snow off the shovel, and I dread what kind of flooding we are going to have when this stuff does start to melt. Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Well, we had another storm last night, with lots of wind this time, and still more snow. I went out this morning to shovel, had to push the door open, sweeping away a mound of snow that was blocking the door, since the snow is already as deep as my porch already. Cleaned off the porch and steps, and looked left down the "walkway" that I had shoveled out during the last storm. You couldn't even tell where it was, there was just a continuous mound of snow from the edge of the house out to the street.
I'm only 5'2" tall, and the mound was as tall as me, and there was probably about 10 to 12 feet to shovel to get out to my parking area. So I decided that the best thing I could probably do was just keep shoveling straight, through maybe 3 feet of snow and hit the street, but I had to go through 3 storms worth of street plowed up snow mound to do it. I would probably still be out there shoveling, if my neighbor from across the street had not come to my rescue. There was literally no way for me to get out of my house if he hadn't, so I told him I owed him a porter house steakWas Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Oh, wow! I need to get out and shovel the drifted snow on our pathway, but I'm waiting a bit yet, until the temperature warms up a bit. It was -10 on our back porch last night, with strong winds blowing. We didn't get much snow, but what we did was very fine and light, perfect for drifting.

I know what you mean. We've had cold blowing wind all night, and my house feels like the inside of a refrigerator, and I'm wearing 3 layers at the moment (I have electric heat, which is very expensive, so I keep my house very low). The city just sent a street snow plow blower up the road, to scrape the edges of the mounds on the side of the road, and guess where the blower was blowing it? Smart answer would be into a dump truck where it could be hauled away, but noooo, they have it aimed back towards the walkway, so they re-covered the stairs I shoveled off yesterday, which means I have to shovel hard packed snow off my stairs again (they have done this before), before I can go to work today. Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

That is criminal that the city is blowing the snow back onto your walk! We live in a rural area so we have to be plowed. The snowbank is almost as tall as our single story house. *sigh*

I know! I have lived in Massachusetts since 1980 and have never remembered anything like this. We did have a few heavy storms about 5 years ago, but even then, there was breaks between them enough to melt before we got more. If I had to jump from my window for any emergency, I would get lost in the snowbanks we have against the walls, they have to be at least 8 feet high from drifts and shoveling the snow somewhere, lol. You stay warm as well. I can only let the dogs out for a few minutes at a time as it is just not sane outside. I think we are all going stir crazy!
