Breeding heard becoming unmanageable
-
I have 117 total intact mares. 0_0 Even if I never add another single mare to my herd I can not breed them all every season, as I can't afford to buy new space for the foals. Should I cull? Keep my personal favorites and offer the rest for public breeding? What would you do?

If you have an idea of what you want to breed for, I'd cull down anything that doesnt fit into that plan..
So for example : when I culled mine down, I auctioned off everything that was yellow an C papered and kept everything that was B or Red 10.40 and above
Next what I did was figured I wanted to work with KP so I auctioned off everything that didn't carry at least 1 kit mutation (although there were 1 or 2 mares without a kit mutation that I kept because I have an attachment to them) and that took me from 50ish mares in pasture down to 20ish mares -
Don't cull - geld/spay as show horses get a small extra boost in training. Show everything (including intacts), the money from their daily payout plus any winnings will soon allow you to buy extra barns. Really decide what you would like to breed for and be ruthless about selling or altering anything that doesn't fit. Take no notice of PT scores in breeding stock - it has no bearing on their breeding ability.Thanked by 1ConfluenceStable
