Baby bunnies!!
-
So, two days ago I got a lovely gift from my BEW doe Darla. I thought I'd share the cuteness with y'all and you can watch as the babies grow up with me. I try to handle them every day, and try to snap some pictures when I do. When they get older I'll be doing more 'separate' pictures, but right now it's cold and I try to keep them together as much as possible.
Firstly, here's momma.
It's a bad picture, but she's all white with blue eyes.
And here are the babies, seven in total.
1 and 2: Solid white with dark black lines over the eyes
3: Solid white with black lines over the eyes, small black spot on rump
4: Black with dutch markings, white paws
5: Black with white belly, small spot on head
6: black with large blaze
7: Blue with smaaall star on head and spot on the nose

:x awhh I remember breeding bunnies I had so much fun, but ended up with 14 total mini rex rabbits at one time. :-O
-
Right now, through various means, I have four does and one buck. All of the does (besides the one who just kindled) are most likely pregnant because where I got them kept bucks and does together.
Thankfully, I have the space for 14 of them at one time! :D -
@IcedBank what breed are your bunnies?
-
Ooh cuteness overload.
One of my work colleagues has a house rabbit who's always in trouble for nibbling her papers and notes when she works at home.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures as they grow up. -
@Abbey98 It's hard to say what breed. The doe is most likely a Hotot/hotot mix, the male she was bred with is pretty much a mystery. Her breeding was with my inhouse males. Either another Hotot/mix, a mystery Charlie black, or a NZ buck. I breed farm rabbits, not show. Though one day I hope to branch into show rabbits. I thought it'd be a good idea to start with mutts to get the system down.
Edit: I should put this in. Her breeding was NOT intentional. I had a communal buck pen and a child put her in the pen with all three males.. Which is why I don't know who the sire to the litter was. I noticed after about an hour once the kid left, but ... you know how that goes. An hour's all it takes.Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-19 16:29:00 -
Looks kinda like there might be a little dutch mix in there too. I also had bet rabbits the breeder before me inbreed them a lot and caused problems. I have a ? for you @IcedBank have you very had rabbits randomly go really skinny in the winter when they have been well feed and have been wormed, they were also in a warm hut? For some reason I lost about 5 rabbits during different years because of that. One sadly had to be put down by the vet it got so bad and the others happened so fast we couldnt act in time.
-
@Abbery98 I have, they didn't die, though. One doe had gotten an eye infection, the other had earmites. For Whatever reason, those two things quickly make my rabbits lose condition. I treated the problem and added banana's to their diet and they plumped up and made it alright. I also added a LOT of freshly sprouted oats. The oats are high in sugar (but also nutrients) and make a thin bun super fat pretty quick. Earmites, for me, was the biggest cause of buns losing weight. Thankfully I got them under control and they've been doing well ever since then.
I always feed my rabbits a little extra in winter, just because they burn more calories staying warm. Adding fresh fodder also helps them keep condition.
Also, the dutch markings are from the Hotot. The 'keystone' look is a combination of the dutch marking and broken/Charlie spotting. Which causes an all white rabbit her have thick 'eyeliner' around the eyes.Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-19 17:37:20Thanked by 1Abbey98 -
@Iced Bank Thank you I would of never of guessed earmites. This also happened to one of my does she had earmits and got really skinny and her hind leg looked like it was broke, my parents and I searched the cage for signs that might have cause this but nothing. (she was never dropped just happened one day and never got better) I know her leg wasn't broke cause she could move around well and she didn't have any signs of distress. Have any ideas of what was wrong? She didnt have too bad of a problem with sore hocks either if that could of been the problem.
-
@Abbey98 Well, I'm pretty new to rabbits myself. However, rabbits will often hide all symptoms of illness and pain. It's why it's so hard to catch bunnies when they are just starting to get sick. Also, if one doe has earmites, it's likely all of them do. I use Almond oil (pure and organic) with a few drops of pure Tea tree oil in my buns' ears. Every other day for the first week, then once a week for a month or so. And then, I do all buns' ears with the mix once a month just to make sure the mites aren't around.
As for the bum leg.. I'd say go to a vet. She could've dislocated it.Thanked by 1Abbey98 -
@Iced Bank Thank you so much I have wandered about this for many years. The bunny I was talking the appeared to be hurt was the one that had to be put down when I was about 9 years old. :(

Cute babies. Your project reminds me of my daughter's photographic record of the growth of a litter of gerbils.
Each of the pictures on this page opens up a gallery for the week.

Sad news. :(
She pushed her drinking bowl, filled with frozen water, over the nest. Two kits froze solid (Black with star and the dutch, I think) and one is VERY very cold and may be dead (The blue one) I'm trying to revive, but she was seperated from the warmth of the others and under an ice thing.
The other four are fine.Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-20 13:13:08 -
:(( Im sorry to hear that. I heard and Ive tried if you put them in a baggy and run warm water over the bag it could revive them along with rubbing them.... unless they have been cold for a very long time.
-
I'm not sure.
Everything I've read says that if the quicks of the toenails has blood, it's too late.
She started to look like she had blood in them, but then it vanished. So I'll give her an hour in my heat box and see how it goes.. I really hope she makes it. :/
Edit: Considering taking the litter from her, so she doesn't do this again, and just bringing her to them for feeding times until they are a bit more sturdy. So this doesn't happen again.Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-20 13:28:07Thanked by 1Abbey98 -
Male 1
Male 2, has a spotty rump
Female Dutch.
Male 3
All the squished babies were female. :/Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-21 10:10:45 -
awhh they are so cute. How are the ones you are trying to save?
-
They all passed away. Two were frozen solid, the other I thought maybe, but unfortunately no.
-
@icedbank sorry about your loss. May if possible get a water bottle instead of a dish so she doesnt tip it over. All my rabbits had bottles. It would be a lot easier then having to hand raise them, just a suggestion. :)
-
Also if you feel they are not warm enough or the doe didnt pull enough fur you can pull apart cotton balls and place them in the nest. I did that when the babies grew and started peeing and matting the nest down.
-
She's got a water bottle, but it's really cold so it froze over. So I've been using a dish to add water.
From here on I remove the dish until I give her water to drink (three or four times a day) and will remove it when she's done with it. -
I see that sounds like a plan.
-
There's a cat under my shed.. Next to the rabbit cages. Possibly stuck, possibly just staying warm.
I'm worried it'll spook Darla.. She's been burying them even deeper now. -
She probly can smell the kitty. How cold is it where u live? In Iowa in February its been around 13F with windchill that makes it feel like -5.
-
It's going to get down to -17 tonight.
I moved Darla and her babies inside. took the whole nest and rebuilt it in a new cage and put them in my room. The first thing she did was check on the babies and give them a quick feeding. I figured, at worse, I'd have to roll her on her back to let the kits nurse once a day until they are old enough to go to her.
Darla seems to enjoy the change. She's running around kicking up her heels playing with the toys. -
That is really cold. By your pictures it looks like it would be nice out.
-
Does only feed them once a day, usually the morning. Pull the nest box and bring it inside, bring them out first thin in the morning to nurse. A few of those little guys are getting kinda skinny. If you run into a hypothermia situation again, run the babies under gently flowing water for 10 -15 minutes (no less). Ive saved many a kit that was drug out of the nest box that way.
-
Darla feeds her kits at 11pm, on the dot. So when I check them at midnight I look for the plump bellies then.
And when I thought the Kit would be okay, I did use water to try and save her. And just to double check I put her in my blowdreyer box. It's a small plastic tub that's connected to a heater blowing hot air. A towel circulates the hot air down and out creating a warm blowdrying effect. I use it in the event of a chicken chicks' bath. It thawed her out pretty quick.
As for the litter, last night I moved her inside. Apparently she did NOT like the nest I made her, since she ate the whole thing and built the kits a new one. It's got less fur, less hay, and it basically a little bowl in the pine shavings. But the babies look quite warm and happy. So I take this as a sign that she didn't abandon them or anything. She just wanted to make the nest MUCH less obvious.
But it does lead to an easier photo op for me. So I can't complain. -
This is her and the nest I made them last night.
The new nest.
Female 1, unchaned. Bit bigger.
Male 1, has developed a 'beauty mark' above his eye.
Male 2, spotty back male
Male three.. No new markings.Post edited by Iced Bank at 2015-02-23 19:47:34 -
awhh so cute :x
-
I can't wait until they fuzz out some more.
Some of the white ones are getting black markings on their ears. It's adorable! n.n -
awhhh you are making me miss breeding rabbits.
-
So, my room has become a rabbit coloney.
I have four does in my room, Darla, Rosie, BB, and Cinnibuns. The former three are all likely pregnant. Rosie's been making a nest for two weeks, BB's amassed a sizable nest herself, Cinnibuns has been collecting hay as well.
BB has also taken to burying herself in hay. I thought she'd escaped at first, until closer inspection revealed she was under the hay I added today. -
Considering starting a livestream for the momma and her litter.. Just so I can be sure she's tending to them. XD
-
It is currently 4 in the morning and FINALLY Darla went and tended her litter.
I gave them a 'proper' nestbox and she took to it well. Which is mildly surprising as she rejected them before and chose to bury the kits in bedding and hay. Immediately after the box was in she jumped right in and groomed a kit or two, then took a drink, and hopped back in.
I'm fairly certain that Darla is the patron saints of mother rabbits. Moving nests twice, locations, a cat nearby and having me mess with her and her babies... I don't know of many rabbits who would tolerate it. -
Okay, okay! So Darla jumped into her nest box, and let the babies have a good suckle, great!
When I went to peak at them while they were uncovered she quickly jumped back into the nest box and recovered them so I couldn't see. -
No new pictures today, mostly because I've been caught up in watching other animals do stuff.
Mainly my Black Lionhead doe. She's been off feed today and is as big as a house. She's due the 25th, but I'm thinking she might have her litter early. Poor momma just lays stretched out most the day. She had a nest build up, then smashed it down, so I put in a nesting box.. So far she's seemed to be more interested in using it as a litter box.
I'm really excited to see what she gives me in terms of color. Hopefully her litter wont be too big, but I think Darla would be willing to foster a few kits, if needed. -
Awhhh I want to hold and cuddle those cuties :x :x
-
OMG they are so cute! I just love the 'mascara' on those white babies! Thank you so much for sharing!
-
So, unfortunately, my mother rabbit (Darla) Prolapsed her Uterus and is still recovering. She may not make it.. It led to her milk drying up, which led to a very uncertain future for these babies. I gave them some Bene-bac to establish an early gut flora and started them on Goatsmilk mixed with kitten formula. Then, my doe, BB had her litter. I slipped Darla's babies in with hers and she cleaned and licked them like her own. BB had six kits, three blakc, one agouti, and two white spotted.
The three black kits are very runty and weak, so I've never expected them to survive. Which is why I chose to foster the older four with the younger litter. I'm hoping that Darla pulls through and comes back into milk so they can both help raise the combined litter, but things aren't looking up for the poor girl. And while BB is perfectly healthy and expected to have many more kits, this could be Darla's last litter so it's very important they survive. -
Awhhhh so cute!!! Rabbits can/will do that cause she was in a cage with 2 bucks its likely she cycled again and got fertilized when she released more eggs. I have read many books about rabbits and I happen to remember that fact. Personally I have never had it happen. I hope they all make it. They all look so cute.
-
Wait, what?
A Prolapsed Uterus means her Uterus was expelled from her body. Not that she had more kits? BB is Black Buns, which is a different rabbit. -
Oh I see see. What caused her to prolapse her uterus? I have had heifers do that but never heard of rabbits doing so.Post edited by Abbey98 at 2015-02-28 11:01:09
