Het Satin In public breeding
-
I found this boy and noticed he was het for satin, should I be concerned, because he is up for stud to the public? http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2834104
-
As a general piece of advice, if a horse is up for 999,999hbs it is NOT up for public. That is the max price they can be put up for, and it's easier for most people to put the stallion up and breed the mares to them. A lot of people (me included) don't bother or remember to take them down once we're done using them.
-
If he's up for public, he's up for public. All horses that are for sale are supposed to for sale to everyone (aside from buddy sale) and a horse up for public breeding is up for everyone. That's in the rules. You can't say "oh this amount means the public can't breed to it", and have any guarantee. That's no rule, unwritten or otherwise.
If someone did breed to him and the owner didn't want that to happen, they would have no one to blame but themselves. They can offer to buy the foal or whatever, but if the person didn't want to sell ...*shrug*..their only recourse would be to block that person.
If you're concerned about keeping your lines to yourself, you need to either use straws or be diligent about taking the horse down. This is just tempting fate at best.
Having said that, I think people would be foolish to spend that much on any breeding.Post edited by Gael4ce at 2015-03-09 16:29:27 -
My method of self-defense from forgetfulness when breeding rare genes is to put the mares up for breeding instead of the stallion. It's a bit of a pain, but I've never had anyone sneak in and snaggle the mare before I've got her bred myself.
-
I seem to remember that wayy back a few years when I used to play, there was an ability to breed privately to your own studs without having to put them up publicly. This would have been pre-pastures. Am I remembering this wrong? If not, how come this feature went away?
-
Nope. :) That was never an option. The first way to breed privately was when straws came into the game. The second was embryo transfer. Pastures are the newest. Those are the only options.
-
Hmm I must be remembering wrong.
-
What if someone breeds to that stud and gets in intact foal and has satin? They could mess up the entire satin thing you guys have with it, chances are they could breed to uneven lines . Or am I just overthinking this?
-
I think anybody who is going to pay that breeding fee would be choosing their mare very carefully.
-
If someone gets an intact foal with satin and uneven lines? OMG, I guess the whole world will just explode! ;)
Relax Abbey - it's not your horse, it's not your lines, it's nothing you need to worry about. If that did happen, it wouldn't be the first time a rare gene got out, and it really only impacts their lines.
Really, this is the concern of the horse's owner only. If they don't care, or if they choose to take the risk with their horse and their lines, that is entirely their choice to make.

And of course, people breeding to that stallion is far more likely to happen now that someone came on the forum and posted all about it for everyone to see whereas before most probably would have never noticed... Just sayin.Post edited by Gael4ce at 2015-03-09 22:00:51

Or the owner could state on horse's notes something like "please do not breed to this horse; for in house breeding only". Although it is no guarantee of no breeding, at least the owner has an argument.
-
As a satin owning member, I would say I'm not happy about satin being left up public, but there isnt anything I or anyone else can do about it. Hopefully the owner will take it down, and hopefully it was just a mistake putting it up, but I have been seeing a few of these lately and I know of atleast a couple people that are upset about it too. I fear satin may become a very common gene in the coming years if this continues, which would be a shame considering how expensive the gene is to get in a foundation and the work some members have put into it.Licenses for everything. I have a pixel pony hoarding problem.Thanked by 1Raina

Sankt - no, they can not put those notes in. That would be against the rules. A horse who is up for sale or breeding is up for *everyone* who has the money.
-
Best rule of thumb, and I always do this now, is I breed from the mare's page. I put her up for brood and breed her right then. I started doing this after I accidentally left one of my in house studs up and he got bred by someone that wasnt on the forum and could not be contacted. If they are up for public brood/stud then anyone can breed them.
-
^ Also an option.
Another safe (kinda) way is to be patient. Towards the end of the season, people have usually burned through their mares, have their stalls stuffed, and aren't cruising around looking for stallions. It's usually fairly safe to have a stallion up for a few minutes to run through all your mares then.Post edited by Gael4ce at 2015-03-10 13:05:17 -
I would hope someone who posted here would have messaged BlackMagic about it. Considering said satin is from my own lines, I am not THRILLED, but I am also of the sort that "once it is out of my barn, it is out of my control".
-
I messaged her on FB when I saw this, but I'm not sure she got it since we aren't friends.Go boldly, where no App has gone before!

He is up for a lot of money. Doesn't look like that many people have even bred to him. Still sucks, but it's personal choice. Once a person owns a horse, it technically is theirs to do as they please. Even if verbal agreements were made as part of the sale, they still own it, and there isn't much you can do to get control back.
-
I understand completely why you really have to trust someone before you let out any satin lines. Can you even get a satin out of him?
-
Hi guys! This is quite the surprise I come home to after a family get-a-way, lol! And I'm sorry that real life has gotten in the way :p But on a serious note, I apologize, especially to Dreamcrest, seeing this is her descendant. I will do all that I can to try to this under control. But before I say anymore, satin was on sale for ALL public at Christmas time, right?Thanked by 1Kintara

Satin was available for anyone who wanted to spend the GMTs to buy, so yes anyone could have made their own foundation in December if they wanted to put out the 120 GMTs for one
-
Thank-you CJ for clarifying that for me. I should have no problem fixing this then :)
