When to cull?
-
Is there a way to tell when a horse is no longer profitable? This mare has leveled off, but her profit is in the negative 100s... is it time for her to go?

Depends. The profit of a horse is not what makes you money. It is the points she has. You get 50% of the points your horses hold in your weekly salary. She has 66 points, so she is making you 33 bhs a week. She is also placing around 7 or 8 o/o 12 entries most of the time, and that means she is making more points every time she shows.ID 195859

Oh, that makes sense! Thank you. So just because she's not winning, doesn't mean she isn't still helping me out, right? When do you know it's time to give up on a horse? Lol :PPost edited by McCaslandFarms at 2015-03-30 09:13:53

Well, that depends on your stall space and such. If it was me I would probably hang on to her for a while longer, but I have lots of barns.ID 195859

Thanks :)

I have a spreadsheet that calculates how much a horse will earn based on points if they never earn another point, and how much they'll earn if they make a consistent number of points (in this horse's case, about 14) every week. It's good for knowing if a horse that's leveled off but still earns points is worth hanging onto.
Generally, I cull when the possible money the horse can make the rest of their life drops below 1000. If you sell to FSYYC directly you're not losing money that way (just getting it all at once rather than over time), and if you auction the horse you're making at least 1200hb profit.

Oh hilo I would love to see that spreadsheet! I was in love with my spreadsheets for the old showing system.
Care to share at all? Haha :PThanked by 1Abbey98 -
Haha sure :) PM me with your email....I don't think I can share a spreadsheet on here.

Depends on how much room you have, she'll probably make you another 2000hbs over her lifetime, if you show her she might gain an odd point here and there, but also lose your a few hbs. Personally I'd auction or yum her, but if you have the room some income is better than none and auction her when she's 17yo!
