White genes
-
Can anyone explain all the white genes to me? Ive read over the thread in faq but im left confused after trying to breed my mare to a stud who didnt have any lethal white genes. If im correct the lethal white is shown as OwO or a horse with partail would have owO or something like that? My mare didnt have any of those symbols. She only has kitw20 kitw2 with wf light. Does lethal white show up with different symbols or can you breed two horses with different white genes? Ive seen the symbol owO in some stallions and was pretty sure thats what it ment but maybe i was wrong??
Here is her link, maybe i could get some insight lol. Thanks everyone for reading.
Ever so lilly

In the menu go to the FAQ user guide, then to helpful hints/ White Factor Risks chart. It explains it a lot better than I could.

The green is safe breeding, yellow/orange risky, and red/brown high risk.

Take a look at this thread. This is from the other server. I don't have the link saved for over here but its the exact same thing for both. Olw is Frame, which is not a "white" gene. However, frame is homozygous lethal and it can contribute to lethal foals with excessive white. If you have any questions after reading, please ask!

And to add on top of that, certain kit genes combined with a certain WF can also cause some lethal genes be created or to combine to kill the foal. And what you are talking about is what's called Frame. OwO and Owo or owO is frame. A lot of white genes and again a certain range of WF can create a lot of lethal genes and most likely kill the foal when frame is put into the mix. What was the sire to the lethal baby? I could look at him to see what caused the baby to die.Thanked by 1HayesStable

Yeah the foal i had died thats why i was confused lol. So owo are types of frames. My mare is heterozygous white 2 and her gene make up was
ee Aa CC nd2nd2 gg Ff SS pp kit w20 kit w2 wf light.
Is she a carrier? What types would be safe to breed to her? -
Ill look him up

Ok i kinda get it now. My mare is a w2 and the stud was a w8 which put the foal at moderate risk of being born with the lethal white gene. I think i may have figured it out after really looking at the chart.

Yep you got it just right! Be careful not to do it again as you will get little to no living foals breeding her like that. High risk usually just means dead no matter what but their are those lucky ones that make it. But very, very few breed for that kinda thing as its not that fun just ending up with dead foals all the time. Unless you have hbs to burn, but still very few do it.

Frame is Olw for Overo, Lethal White. It is homozygous lethal, so breeding two horses with Olw has a 1 in 4 chance of a dead foal. The gene is written O when it does not carry the potentially lethal mutation. This is an entirely different gene than the various Kit mutations.
The Kit Lethality chart primarily deals with the hazards of crossing horses with various Kit mutations (refered to as White Spotted in the color name.) The Sabino, Roan, and Tobiano Kit mutations are less dangerous but the two Sabinos and Tobiano can still cause issues with mutations like White 1 and White 10 that put a lot of white on a horse.
There are two other genes that may cause dead foals. Splash 2 (PAX3^C70Y) and Splash 3 are homozygous lethal and lethal when combined. Splash 1 (Sps) and Macchiato, a closed gene, (SplashM) are safe with any other splash mutation.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2019-02-17 13:55:07
