Excessive white burden?
-
I bred this mare to this stallion and got a foal with excessive white who didn’t survive? The mare only has w20. I thought w20 + w is safe?
Stud
Paradox Zenith GP
Mare:
Bright Legacy GP -
white 20 and white 2 have a moderate to high risk to loose the foal.Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.

Ooooooooh. Oops! Lol

Heres a link to the chart that shows the interactions of the various white genes. https://www.huntandjump.com/faq.php#870

I’ve looked at the chart. I’ve had trouble making sense of it :-?
-
What do you not understand @paradoxphoenix? The genes or how the combinations work?
-
It’s hard for me to read and process the information on it. Maybe I need to look at it on an actual computer....
-
For a quick text reference of the most common Kit genes:
W1 is not 100% safe with any Kit mutation
W2 is only 100% safe with tobiano, roan
Sb1 is safe with all Kit genes but W1, W2, W3
w20 is safe with all Kit genes except W1, W2
Tobiano: safe with everything except W1
Roan: safe with everything except W1Thanked by 1Kintara -
Awesome! That’s super helpful, thank you!Thanked by 1SherwoodStables

Thank you, Sherwood. I've been having issues with that, too. I've just been avoiding all of them because I couldn't figure it out. :))
-
You're very welcome!
-
Also remember that even the ones that are 100% safe becomes less safe if you add splash to the mix :)ID 195859Thanked by 1SherwoodStables

Frame and sabino, too, right? I've wondered if appaloosa counts toward the white load, or if only PATN1 does, or neither?
-
I'm pretty sure appy does not. All KIT genes does, so Sb1 does. Frame I am not sure about, but I would believe it makes it less lethal, as it restricts white, not boost it.ID 195859Thanked by 1SherwoodStables

Frame is Homozygous leathal
-
And Ammit has said that frame boosts the white load for Kit mutations.
The various Kit mutations can be lethal together because they are all breaks in different places of the same very long gene. That gene controls a lot of things, so if the gene gets too broken, something vital cannot develop in the foal, causing it to die in utero.

I keep accidentally breeding w2 and w20 together and keep getting live foals. Actually, in searching my history I have long history of doing this:

Which explains my surprise in getting a lethal foal. I get w2/w20 foals all the time.
But the one time I’m really really looking forward to my 3G foal....,
Ah well. I have a stallion by the same side that should be safe to cross her on instead.
